The Law of Innocence by Michal Connelly **Book Review** @tr4cyf3nt0n

Happy Tuesday all!

And a BIG HAPPY PUB DAY to one of my favorite authors!🥳

My Thoughts

Mickey Haller is back! And this time he is defending himself…

A man who represents himself, has a fool for a client.

Michael Connelly is one of my all-time favorite authors. I love all his characters, the courtroom drama, the investigation. Mickey Holler is pulled over one night on the way home. The cop explains he is pulling him over because he does not have a back license plate, but what is that dripping out of his trunk? When i the trunk is popped open and a body is found, Mickey knows he’s been framed. But by who? And why? Finding himself in a Downtown LA jail Mickey is determined to defend himself, using his jail cell as his office. He knows his reputation will require him not only to prove his innocence, but also prove who committed the murder.

All the gang is here, old characters and new. Even some surprises. Of course I was thrilled to see my favorite detective ever Harry Bosch, Mickey‘s half brother. Once again I was completely caught up in this intriguing investigation. I also always love to watch Mickey in action in the courtroom – not going to lie can’t help but picture Matthew McConaughey. The story takes place in the beginning of 2020 and it was interesting how the onset of the coronavirus was woven into the story, with an epilogue that really brought it home. Another stellar book from this amazing storyteller.

About the Book

C

Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller must defend himself against murder charges in the heartstopping new thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.

Defense attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by police, who find the body of a client in the trunk of his Lincoln. Haller is charged with murder and can’t make the exorbitant $5 million bail slapped on him by a vindictive judge.

Mickey elects to defend himself and must strategize and build his defense from his jail cell in the Twin Towers Correctional Center in downtown Los Angeles, all the while looking over his shoulder – as an officer of the court he is an instant target.

Mickey knows he’s been framed. Now, with the help of his trusted team, he has to figure out who has plotted to destroy his life and why. Then he has to go before a judge and jury and prove his innocence.

In his highest stakes case yet, Mickey Haller fights for his life and shows why he is “a worthy colleague of Atticus Finch…in the front of the pack in the legal thriller game” (Los Angeles Times).

Her Final Prayer (Detective Clara Jefferies Book 2) by Kathryn Casey **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy hump day all!

Hope life is treating you well! It is times like these I am most grateful for books!

My Thoughts

A tense and clever police procedural. This is the second book in the detective Clara Jeffries series. In the previous book Clara is summoned to her isolated Utah hometown to help investigate the disappearance of one of her sisters. In this book Clara has decided to stay in the fictional town of Alber where she is now the acting police chief. When there is a gruesome murder of a family on the outskirts of town Clara is on the case. But it’s even more complicated than solving a murder. The town is not excited to have Clara back, they have shunned her for leaving years ago.

This isolated backwards polygamist small town offers the perfect backdrop to this police procedural. The religious beliefs of this fringe polygamist sect creates an abundance of tension. Clara’s familiarity with the community is both helpful and harmful in the search for answers. Clara is a great character and I really like learning more about her backstory. But boy oh boy does the girl have so much more baggage to unpack. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Max and Clara. Max is such a good guy and I really hope that Clara and he can help one another heal their wounds. The mystery was perfectly paste and compelling. I truly had no idea who done it until the culprit was revealed. Another great installment in this chrime series.

About the Book

Her pulse pounded in her ears as she scanned the house. Her eyes traveled over the porch where three empty chairs lazily rocked in the breeze, surrounded by scattered children’s toys. In the yard, there were mounds of earth. Graves. Only big enough for children…

When Detective Clara Jefferies is called to a family ranch just outside of Alber, Utah, she’s horrified to find two innocent young children murdered alongside their mothers. But she arrives at the scene quickly enough to rush their father, Jacob Johansson, to hospital where he begins fighting for his life, and to save his two-month-old son Jeremy, left untouched in his crib.

As Clara begins to investigate, nothing she finds out makes sense. Though she uncovers photos of one of Jacob’s wives in his best friend’s trailer, her flower necklace underneath his bed, there are rumors that she was in love with a different man altogether. And as the close-knit community comes together to support Jacob, Clara’s own family shut her out of the investigation…

But Clara won’t give up. With the killer still at large, baby Jeremy is at risk, and every moment her family are helping Jacob they are also in danger. To earn her family’s trust, Clara finally has to face the past, but can she do it before it’s too late?

Impossible to put down, Her Final Prayer is perfect for readers of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. You’ll race through the pages until the final heart-pounding twist.

Find Her Alive by Lisa Regan **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy Thursday all! It is Thursday right?

How are you all doing? Not going to lie I’m starting to go a little stir crazy! Thank goodness for Books and especially for addictive books like this one!🚨

My Thoughts

Guess who’s back, back again
Josie’s back, tell a friend.

If you have not read this series yet, what are you waiting for? Lisa Regan has brilliantly plotted each of the books in this series and this might just be the best one yet! Explosive, tense, smart, suspenseful, addictive. Crime thrillers with well-developed characters and clever storylines. Each book can be read as a standalone, but I strongly encourage you to read them all. Josie is such a great character and there’s so much growth in her throughout these books. Also each story offers you a glimpse into each of the secondary characters backstories. This book gives us an opportunity to learn a little more about Trinity (Josie’slong lost twin sister).

Josie has not had contact with her sister Trinity a popular morning news host for several weeks, not since they had a bit of a fall out. When Josie is not able to contact her by phone she decides to head to the cabin where she has been staying. When she gets there she finds Trinity‘s car and purse, but no Trinity. She also finds human bones laid out in an artistic manner. Who’s bones are these? And do they have anything to do with what Trinity was investigating before she went missing? Once again Josie finds herself investigating a dark crime where Time is of the essence. Loved playing detective and investigating right along side Josie and crew. All the usual characters helped Josie with the investigation, my favorites of course being Noah and Gretchen. We also get to know Josie‘s parents better in this book as well as her brother Patrick. The mystery was intelligent and I loved how it incorporated shorthand and symbolism. Another winner in this excellent series!

About the Book

Josie treads gently, careful not to disturb the pile of perfect white bones laid out in the grass by her feet. Her voice is little more than a whisper.
“No! Not my sister…”

Detective Josie Quinn hasn’t heard from her sister since Trinity stormed out of the house in the heat of an argument three weeks ago. So, when human remains are found at the remote hunting cabin where Trinity was last seen, Josie can only assume the worst.

Gathering her team, Josie feels a surge of relief when the dental records match a different body – that of a missing single mother from a neighboring town. But now Josie’s is not the only broken family desperate for answers.

Dusting the crime scene for prints, a name smudged into the side of a nearby car is the first in a trail of clues Trinity left for Josie. In need of a big story to save her journalism career, it seems Josie’s sister was attempting to make contact with a dangerous serial killer known for creating sculptures with his victim’s bones. And Trinity won’t stop until she’s found him, even if it means becoming his next masterpiece…

Josie is certain there’s a critical clue in the ivory hair comb delivered to Trinity just days before she went missing. But as more bones surface, each set more likely to be Trinity’s than the last, time is running out to find her alive. Can Josie’s team trust her instincts in a case that is so deeply personal? Can she find her sister without putting other innocent lives in danger?

An unputdownable crime thriller from an Amazon, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author that will have you sleeping with the light on. This gripping rollercoaster ride is perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine. Prepare to be totally hooked!

Death Before Coffee by Desmond P. Ryan @RealDesmondRyan @damppebbles #bookreview #deathbeforecoffee

Happy Saturday, yay it’s the weekend!

Excited to share with you today my review for this compelling book. A huge thank you to Emma for my invitation to the tour!☕️

Book Blurb:

By 2:27 on a Thursday afternoon, the one-legged man from Room 8 at 147 Loxitor Avenue has been beaten to death with a lead pipe. Twenty-eight minutes later, Detective Mike O’Shea is testifying in a stuffy courtroom, unaware that, within an hour, he will be standing in an alleyway littered with beer cans and condoms while his new partner—the man who saved his life thirteen years ago—flicks bugs off of a battered corpse with a ballpoint pen. When a rogue undercover copper prematurely hauls in the prime suspect, Mike blows a fuse, resulting in an unlikely rapport developing between him and the lead homicide detective sergeant, a woman known for her stilettos and razor sharp investigative skills. At the end of his seventy-two-hour shift, three men are dead and Mike O’Shea is floating in and out of consciousness in an emergency room hallway, two women by his side.

Death Before Coffee, the second book in the Mike O’Shea Crime Fiction Series, weaves a homicide investigation through the life of an inner-city police detective intent on balancing his responsibilities as a son, brother, and newly single father with his sworn oath of duty. When faced with death, Mike is forced to make decisions that stir up old memories, compelling him to confront his demons while fighting the good fight.

My Thoughts

This book is like a cup of coffee… dark, strong, and caffeinated. This is the second book in the Michael O’Shea series, and I think I might have missed a little having not read the first book. From what I gather this book takes up 13 years after the previous book and now Mike is no longer working on juvenile cases. This book was very real and raw. Very reminiscent of some of the better police programs on TV such as NYPD Blue or my beloved Law and Order. Also I’m not quite sure I’ve ever seen the murder weapon being a lead pipe other than in the board game Clue. I’m kind of rambling, but I really don’t know if I should say much about the plot, I think it might spoil it?

Mike is an old school detective, a bit grumpy with some strong family ties. I really love his large Irish family, especially mom! The mystery was very intriguing although quite dark. In fact the entire book had a bit of a bleak and gloomy air about it. Although I think this just added to the overall tone of the story, definitely didn’t take anything from it.

An extremely well done crime thriller that will leave you wanting more!

*** Big thanks to the author for my copy of this book ***

About Desmond P. Ryan:

For almost thirty years, Desmond P. Ryan worked as a cop in the back alleys, poorly-lit laneways, and forgotten neighbourhoods in Toronto, the city where he grew up. Murder often most unkind, assaults on a level that defied humanity, and sexual violations intended to demean, shame, and haunt the victims were all in a day’s work. Days, evenings, midnights–all the same. Crime knows no time.

Whether as a beat cop or a plainclothes detective, Desmond dealt with good people who did bad things and bad people who followed their instincts. And now, as a retired detective, he writes crime fiction.

Real Detective. Real Crime. Fiction.

The Bones She Buried by Lisa Regan @Lisalregan @bookouture #bookreview #thebonessheburied

TGIF book lovers!

I am so excited to share with you today my review for the fifth book in this stellar series! Many thanks to Noelle for my invitation to the tour and to Lisa Regan for this amazing series!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

My Thoughts

Josie Quinn is back and better than ever!

This is the fifth book in the Josie Quinn police procedural series and it is just as strong if not stronger than the previous books. I have a love hate relationship with this series, I love when a new book is out and I hate waiting for the next book! I mean seriously Lisa Regan can’t you write a little faster? Kidding! Lisa is able to write four stellar books in a year, I am most impressed and I can’t possibly complain. Although after this ending I am more than eagerly anticipating book six!

The book starts off with Josie and Noah about to go have dinner at Noah‘s mothers house, Noah‘s mother hasn’t exactly warmed up to Josie as of yet. Josie is a girl after my own heart, she is attempting to impress Noah’s mother and ends up burning at least three desserts in the process. This is all quickly forgotten because when they arrive at Noah’s mother’s house they discover her laying face down in the dirt without a pulse. It turns out Collette (Noah‘s mother) has been murdered suffocated with the soil in her garden, a terrible way to go. The house has been searched, what was the killer looking for? Why would anyone possibly want to kill sweet Collette? Josie discovers some hidden items that might have something to do with the murder, but how are they linked? That’s all I’m giving to you about the plot, don’t want to spoil anything.

Josie is a great character, she has grown so much over the course of these books, but she still does some pretty foolish things. There was One or maybe two times during this book I wanted to reach through the pages and shake some sense into her. I’m glad she has Trinity in her life now to tell her what’s what. I was happy to see all the characters from the previous books, it’s like visiting old friends. I especially liked seeing Gretchen again after the previous book where all her dark secrets were revealed, she is probably my favorite after Josie. I have a saucepot for Noah as well, however he did frustrate me a bit in this book, had to remind myself that he had just lost his mom a couple times. There are a few new characters introduced and I am curious to see how they develop and what part they play in the series.

Once again I had a brilliant time playing detective along with Josie and the gang! I will be enthusiastically awaiting the next book in this wonderful series! Recommend!

*** many thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

Josie works until her arms ache, until the paramedics arrive and pull her gently away from the woman’s cold, fragile body. Noah’s voice cracks beside her as he calls the time of death for his own, beloved mother.

Arriving with her partner Noah for dinner at his family’s immaculate countryside home, Detective Josie Quinn is devastated to find Noah’s mother, Colette, lying lifeless in the back garden, her mouth clogged with soil.

Searching the house for answers, Josie’s team don’t know what to make of the rosary beads buried in the dirt near the body, or the hidden file labelled “Drew Pratt”, the small town of Denton’s most famous missing person.

As she delves deeper into Pratt’s case, Josie quickly discovers he had a brother whose body mysteriously washed up on the banks of a river. There’s also a diary entry suggesting that Colette may have met him on the last day he was seen alive. Can Josie believe the unthinkable, that a kind old soul like Colette might have been involved in their murders? And, will Josie’s new relationship with Noah survive the accusation?

Josie’s only hope lies in tracking down Pratt’s daughter. But when she arrives at her home to find she’s been murdered just minutes before, Josie knows the real killer is one step ahead and won’t stop until Colette’s secret is buried forever.

The Silent Dead by Graham Smith @GrahamSmith1972 @bookouture #bookreview

Happy Thursday everybody!

Excited to share with you today my review four the first book in this new police procedural! Many thanks to Noelle for my invitation to the tour and to Graham Smith for his wonderful words!🚨

The-Silent-Dead-KindleHe’d found an angel for his collection. But one angel at a time was never enough…

Detective Beth Young has just joined the Cumbrian major crimes team when a body is found posed in a ritualistic manner – arms spread and graceful wings attached – at a crumbling castle in the hills of the Lake District.

The entire police force are on red alert. But Beth begins to feel she’s the only one who can follow the disturbing clues left by the twisted killer. Because she doesn’t think like everyone else. To Beth, crimes are puzzles she can solve. Even if real life is a little harder.

As more bodies are discovered in derelict stately homes across the Lake District, she knows she’s in a race against time.

But the killer is looking for another victim to add to his collection… Will Beth be able to save her? Or will he get there first?

A tenacious young detective with scars both physical and emotional, Beth Young will stop at nothing in her fight for justice for the innocent. The Silent Dead is the first book in the series. Set in the Lake District, it is perfect for fans of Joy Ellis, LJ Ross, and Peter James.

this was one twisted, dark and disturbing start to a new police procedural series!

This is the first book in a new series, featuring young newbie detective Beth Young…. The mystery was twisted, sick, and sadistic… what compels a man to stage a body with a burnt mouth and wings attached to their back? Yes, actual wings! Makes you wonder what goes on in the mind of this brilliant author, Graham Smith….

The story is told primarily from the point of view of Beth… however, we also get some creepy insight from another undisclosed character… this gruesome prime appeared to have no pattern, the victims appeared to be chosen at random…. The detectives were baffled as was I, but Beth seem to have an unusual way of puzzling crimes out…

I really like the fact that Beth was a brand new eager detective, she was not yet disheartened… however, I’m not sure that the team would have given her as much respect and responsibility as they did in this book, although it would be nice… Additionally I really had a hard time connecting two Beth… we really got very little of her backstory both personal and professional… we really didn’t get a look into her personal life at all, but there is room for that in future books and this does leave her with lots of room for growth… A solid start to a brand new series…

Recommend to anybody who is a fan of this author, this genre, or sick sadistic crimes!

*** Big thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

Tell Nobody by Patricia Gibney @trisha460 @bookouture #bookreview

Hope you’re having a fabulous Friday and gearing up for a weekend full of fun and reading!

Thrilled to share with you today my review for this wonderful fifth installment in the DI Lottie Parker series… A huge thank you to Kim for my invitation and to Patricia Gibney for this fabulous series🧡

Tell-Nobody-KindleThe boy’s body was so white it was almost transparent. But that’s not what caused the nausea to rise up her throat. He was so young. His body was unmarked, surrounded by a halo of plucked wildflowers.

One hot summer evening, eleven-year-old Mikey Driscoll is on the way home from playing with friends. Two days later, his body is discovered on a bed of wildflowers by some local teenagers.

The case is assigned to Detective Lottie Parker and this time it’s personal. The victim was a close friend of her son, Sean, from the run-down Munbally estate on the other side of town. Sean tells his mother Mikey was behaving normally before he died, but Lottie can’t help but feel that her son is keeping something from her…

Then days later, another boy is found dead, surrounded by wild flowers next to beautiful Ladystown Lake.

On the hunt for a twisted individual with a terrifying calling card, Lottie must uncover the web of secrets within Mikey’s circle of friends. Someone is hiding something but who are they protecting and can Lottie find out before it’s too late? Lottie is desperate to catch the killer before he strikes again because this time her own child could be in terrible danger…

If you love Karin Slaughter, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Abbott, you’ll love the latest heart-stopping thriller from Patricia Gibney. Tell Nobody will keep you guessing until the very last page.

My Thoughts

This is a suspenseful intense read that will keep you on the edge of your seat…

This is the fifth book in the DI Lottie Parker series… The thing I love about this series is even though it is a police procedural it is very character driven…Lottie’s complex personal life is a central part of the series… along with the more personal relationships her team has with one another…. this really allows you the reader to feel a strong connection with the characters, and for me this just adds another layer and dimension to the story…

This book starts out with the murders of three children, one of them just a baby… even more terrifying these murders are way too close to home… with one of the victims being Lottie’s son Sean‘s friend Mikey… so who is killing young boys and leaving their bodies posed with wildflowers? Is it the same murderer? Is it a copycat? What could the possible motive be? Convinced that her son Sean and friends have some secrets they are not sharing, and worried he could possibly be the next victim, Lottie immerses herself fully into this case…

Lottie is a likable character even though her life is quite a hot mess… living with her mother after a fire is forcing her to repair that relationship… she is still on again off again with Marc, hoping there is some resolution with this in the next book? And she continues to piss off the higher ups! Not to mention all the bickering and conflict within the team…. and Lottie is still self-medicating, Lottie needs a good talking to buy a good friend! As much as I adore Lottie for who she is, a little character growth in the next book would be fabulous! This is a series that you read for the mystery and stay for the characters!

An intriguing captivating installment in this series with a tragic and heartbreaking end! Absolutely recommend two fans of the series, and if you have not read the series yet, what are you waiting for?

Murder By The Broads by Anthony Tamiozzo @Tamiozzo3 @Bloodhoundbook #BookReviewz

Happy Monday everyone!

And happy Publication Day to this first book in a fabulous new police procedural series! Many thanks to Sarah for my invitation to this blog tour and to Anthony for his wonderful book!🙂

Murder by the Broads FINAL Avenir Next and Allegra stencil

Meet DS Adam Burnt, a troubled man who has his work cut out. While at a crime scene he is informed of another murder. But Burnt is also having problems at home. He suspects his wife is having an affair.

As the clues unfold DS Burnt begins a game of cat and mouse.

What links the two murders to a doctor and a psychiatric hospital?

Trying to juggle his personal life and the job, Burnt must navigate Great Yarmouth and the surrounding areas to catch a killer and stop a vicious gang.

My Thoughts

This is the first book in the DI Adam burnt police procedural series… it is also this author’s debut, so a big congratulations on your first published book! More than I will ever be able to say, that is for sure!

So Adam has moved his family to a different location in the UK, mainly to improve his marriage… The problem is Adam is married to his work, he also does not trust his wife… at all! However, this book focuses much more on the case rather than Adam’s home life… two teenage boys are murdered and their bodies are found close together… how are these murders related and why would anybody kill these young boys? When another body is discovered the case really gets heated up with much pressure to solve… Adam is a committed detective however his lack of familiarity with the area does hurt him….

This is a book you need to pay close attention to as it jumps around quite a bit… admittedly there were times where I was a bit confused and had to go back and reread… i’m thinking because this was the author’s debut he probably had a lot going on in his head that he wanted to put to paper…. but sometimes less is a little bit better… definitely a complex plot that kept me on my toes! I also thought Adam Burnt was a interesting character and I am super curious to see what this character does next… there is quite a bit of potential for some tremendous character growth with him!

Recommend two fans of the police procedural, a good start to what looks like a wonderful series!

*** many thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy of this book ***

If Troy didn’t take his own life, then who did? As he investigates, Boateng discovers a link to an incident from decades earlier. Mistakes were made that day. Lives were lost and secrets kept. Until now…

As more people who were there on that fateful day are found dead, Boateng knows that the killer is closing in on him…

A tense crime thriller for fans of Lee Child, Mark Billingham and Mark Dawson. Last Witness is a gripping, fast-paced thriller that will have you hooked from the first page.

My Thoughts

4 Cracking Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is the second book in the Zac Boateng police procedural series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone… I did not read the first book and I was not lost at any time… I’m sure I missed some character background, but it was not necessary to the story…

Sometimes I struggle with police procedurals, there is too much procedural and not enough character development… I thought this book had a really good balance of both… and bonus Zac is a healthy well-adjusted character without an addiction…. additionally he is married with children…. The one thing that does haunt him though is the murder of his daughter, and I would think anybody would be haunted by this police or not…

Zac’s longtime friend Troy is murdered… I always get excited when a character has the same name as one of my children, however not so much when he is the murder victim! The murder is made to look like a suicide, but Zac is not convinced and believes he might be next… what happened in 1998? And why are people being killed 20 years later? Well you will need to read this book to find that out!

This book was perfectly paste and well plotted with the perfect amount of twists to keep you guessing… and of course as in 94% of the books I read I did not see that ending coming, I really would be the world‘s worst detective ever!

Recommend to fans of the police procedural with a strong well developed male detective…

My Thoughts

5 Best Yet Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is the third book in the detective Josie Quinn series and the best yet! Josie Quinn is being crowned my favorite female detective… Lisa Regan did a brilliant job with the character development of Josie… in the first book I liked her but I didn’t feel as though we really got to know her…in the second book we got to know her a little better, we got a little glimpse into her past, but we were still held at arms length… in this book WOW she was laid bare to us… we got multiple flashbacks of Josie from age 6 to 14 when she was abused almost to the point of being tortured by her mother… this part of the book was hard to read… it was very dark, very disturbing, yet very revealing and telling…. your heart broke for Josie and your respect grew for her….

This book starts out with 30 year old bones being discovered… when the identity of the body is revealed to be A young lady named Belinda Rose, Josie is confused… how can that be? That is her mother’s name and her mother was still alive…. so who is her mother really? And how is she connected to this body? Just as in the previous books in this series The layers of this mystery were peeled away at the perfect pace… leaving me frantically turning the pages to see what was going to happen next…. twist after twist that I did not see coming and an ending that surprised me and left me satisfied…

In my review for the second book in the series I asked Lisa Reagan to please let a little romance develop between Noah and Josie… and guess what? She listen to me!😂 I like the direction their relationship is headed in and I hope Noah can help Josie heal her heart… I cannot wait for the next book in this series… and I will let you in on a little something cool… Lisa Regan commented on my blog and the next book will reveal some of Gretchen’s secrets and it’s out in December!

In case you couldn’t figure it out from my gushing review I strongly encourage you to pick this book up and if you have the time binge the entire series over the weekend!
