I was asked by the lovely Karen White (Pen name Karen Grey) to review this wonderful audiobook, and I’m so glad I said YES, as it was so good!!

My Review

This book was so much fun, taking us back to the 80’s we meet the very awkward Kate Bishop, she is a financial analyst working in an all male office. She tries her best to fit in and be one-of-the-boys, but she mostly fails miserably.

She is brilliant at her job, but she has problems with speaking in front of people, and has trouble with social cues.

While trying to impress her work colleagues, she agrees to go to a social gathering at the local bar, this is where she meets Will, an actor/bartender, who notices how uncomfortable she is, and offers her a drink that won’t end up with her on the bar floor as she really doesn’t do well with alcohol.

Although these two people shouldn’t fit together they do brilliantly, Kate being her usual awkward self doesn’t immediately see the connection, while the Shakespeare spouting young Will does feel a spark.

With lots of 80’s references throughout the book, and the narration by the always brilliant Joe Arden, and the fabulous narration by the author herself, Karen Grey/White has made an instant new fan in me.

It was cute, very funny, and sometimes cringeworthy with some of the characters antics!

The audiobook was done brilliantly, and I loved the added extras such as the answering machine voicemails that were left, it made me very nostalgic.

All in all it was a great read, and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next, I wonder if we will have a story for “hot Steve”?

I’m super happy to bring you my review for the audiobook that has been released for this lovely story – if it sounds slightly familiar, it is because Berit reviewed the book a few weeks ago Here.

My Thoughts

This was a lovely slow burn romance book told from the POV of Jess and Alex.

Jess is 29 and has recently moved to London for a new job opportunity, she can’t afford to pay the extortionate rental prices there, so she rents a room in a house with new housemates.

After arriving at the house and being introduced to everyone, she notices Alex, the male nurse who is sharing her floor with her and thinks Yummy!

There wasn’t insta-love so much as an insta-connection, but Jess is fully aware of the house rules that have been set for everyone, and one of those, is NO RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HOUSEMATES.

So that’s that!

But is isn’t quite, Jess and Alex bond as friends and often go around exploring London and all of it’s hidden gems, but Alex is secretly seeing one of the housemates Emma, much to Jess’s dismay, and because she has been ‘friend-zoned’ decides to try her hand at online dating, to which Alex is a little crestfallen as he secretly likes Jess.

Although this is called We met In December, it is not a Christmassy book as the book spans a whole year between the characters, and throughout gives a will-they-won’t-they vibe.

But I will say that the snippets about Christmas and the way that the author describes London at that time of year, really got me into the Xmas spirit.

Narrated by Finlay Robertson and Jessica Preddy, who both did fantastic jobs, I was thoroughly entertained throughout the whole book and will definitely look for books narrated by them again.

Happy to bring you this review for a book that has been out for quite a while, but still worth a read.

Why did you pick it up Vicci? – Well 1. it was an Audible Daily deal, 2. I loved Everything Everything which was the authors previous book, and 3. Bahni Turpin, as I’ve said before she is an instant 1 click for me, so this one was a special bonus.

My Thoughts

I love a YA love story, yes they can be a little Insta-love, but they are great, you can get lost in a fabulous book for a few hours, and when you look up, all is right with the world!

This story is about a girl called Natasha, who is basically living in NYC illegally, her parents moved to America from Jamaica and never returned, they have been working, but a silly mistake by her father has now brought the authorities aware of their situation and the family are now being deported back to Jamaica.

Natasha is obviously very upset by this, she came to America when she was very young so she thinks of it as home, she has never even been to Jamaica and has no desire to go there again, her school and friends are here, and she is looking forward to going to college, so she finds the one person that she thinks may be able to help her stay, a lawyer.

Daniel is our other MC in this book, he is a Korean American boy, who is legal. His parents moved to the US many years before he was born. His parents are very strict and like him to be as Korean as he can.

Daniel is about to go for an interview for a place in Yale, somewhere he doesn’t particularly want to go, but his parents (mainly his father) have pushed him into it, Daniel wants to be a poet.

A ‘meet-cute’ happens, and the two meet and decide to spend the day together, Daniel does not know about Natasha’s situation.

I loved the fact that this was not only told in dual POV, but it also goes into the background of some of the other characters so that you can see why they are the way that they are (if that makes sense)

Because Natasha is Black and Daniel is Korean I loved the way that they explain their different cultures etc to each other, and that it wasn’t just fluffy ‘I love You’s’ in fact Natasha doesn’t believe in all that, she is a science geek, it is actually Daniel that is a hopeless romantic.

I LOVED the ending, it was done so perfectly, i’m not sure if I would have liked it any other way!

🎧🎧 – Narrated as always beautifully by Bahni Turpin with Raymond Lee and Dominic Hoffman who are 2 new narrators for me, but made this book sound so good.

This is also a new movie, being released in May 2019.

Hello again, I’m so pleased to bring you this review for a fantastic series that had me flipping those pages and staying up late to finish!

Why did I pick it up? – HELLO …Tarryn!!!!! As you all probably already know by now, I am a sucker for a Tarryn Fisher book, she writes the most messed up characters, and they all have depth to them.

In this book Ms Fisher has collaborated with Willow Aster and created a world where the Women are in charge, in fact Men are on the verge of extinction!

Think of this book as a little like a reverse take on the Handmaids Tale and you will be nearly on the right track.

Men are no longer in charge, in fact there are barley any of them left, this is why they started the “End Men” 12 men who’s sole job is to save the world, their sole purpose is to repopulate the Regions.

The rich people can afford to buy Folsom for a day, however the poor are not so lucky, they must rely on a national lottery to have their numbers pulled out, and to have the opportunity of maybe becoming pregnant by one of the End Men, if you do, well your life will change for the better, you will become a celebrity, coveted by others.

Folsom actually hates being and End Man, although he gets to have meaningless sex with strangers all the time, it isn’t as fun as it sounds, he is unhappy, empty and lonely.

Gwen’s number finally comes up! She gets to have the chance at something she has always wanted, a child of her own, she has seen Folsom in the fancy magazines and on the TV, and now she finally gets the chance to actually meet him, not only to meet him, but to potentially bare his child.

Only she finds much more than a man looking to have mindless sex with her, she sees the person underneath, she sees the injustice of what is happening to him, and she does her best to save him.

By looking at the blurb of the book, and the picture, you probably will already have guessed that there is going to be sex in the book, this is necessary to the story, you can’t have a story about men having sex with people, to not have sex in the book.I loves me some smexy times in my books, but if lots-of-lovin’ isn’t really your thing, then maybe look in the other direction, but you will be missing out on a great read, I can’t wait to read book 2.

Hello from over here is a wet rainy UK!

I kind of knew what i was getting into with this one as I had watched the True Blood series on TV,  however I only watched about half of the first season, so I have no idea where it goes from there.

Why did I pick it up? – Well Urban Fantasy isn’t something that I would chose to pick up as a rule, but it was for a reading challenge, so I pulled up my big-girl panties and dove in, I’m so glad I did as I loved it!

Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in a bar, she is very ordinary and has nothing special about her, well apart from the fact that she can read your mind and hear your thoughts!

She hates that she can do this, and tries her best not to, but it isn’t always that easy.

Now the town that she lives in is very open, in fact it is so open that they are OK with the fact that vampires live there, they keep themselves to themselves and there isn’t usually any trouble.

I loved the way that it is seemed as quite normal for Vampires to be living there, I mean they are not your normal neighbourly have-a-chat friendly type, but the world has grown used to these things now, Vampires can go into a local bar and have a beer, or a synthetically modified bottle of blood, and nobody really cares that much.

Bill is such a character, Sookie is drawn to him because unlike the others, she cannot hear his thoughts or read his mind, it is quiet for her for the first time, and she likes that.
They soon become friends and then more.

Her grandmother is horrified that she is seeing a vampire, until she meets Bill and is taken by is manors and how handsome he is.

With a mystery, and a few sub plots going on, I think that this is a series that I am going to really enjoy, there was lots of blood, violence and actually a nice love story.

🎧🎧 – Perfectly narrated by Johanna Parker, I just fell in love with her accent, the way she pronounces words was just beautiful, I’ve always been a sucker for a southern accent, and this made my heart swell with love for it even more

My Thoughts

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Young Love Stars

So this never would have come up on my radar if I hadn’t seen a trailer for the new movie coming out.

This could have been the new TFIOS (The Fault in Our Stars) but it just fell short of that, not to say that it wasn’t a fab read, but it didn’t hit me as hard.

This is the story of Stella Grant, she has Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and has been struggling with the illness since she was born, she is currently in hospital, where all of the staff know her, considering she is in there so often.

Everything is sterile, and also in the right place, Stella is a little OCD with things, probably because that is the only thing that she can control.

Will however is not so OCD, he arrives on the CF ward and is not in control, he doesn’t take his meds when he is supposed to and doesn’t really take into consideration how ill he really is, especially as he has B.cepacia along with his CF (This rare disease could be fatal to someone with CF, just a simple touch can infect them)

Therefore the rules are, no touching, and you must be AT LEAST 6 feet apart!

So why does the book have the title of 5 feet you ask?

Well, this is a YA book after all, these guys take risks for love!

A few things did nag at me, I won’t spoil them here but if you read the book you will probably see them too, however it didn’t sway me from reading the book, and I will certainly be looking out for the movie and see what they do with it.

I really had no idea how devastating this disease really is, so I’m really pleased that the author has brought it to the attention of everyone that reads the book, and with a movie also coming out it will reach a lot further and teach a lot more people about CF.

4 Dystopian Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I do love myself a Dystopian story, most of mine that I have read have been Young Adult, and I haven’t really thought about reading any others.

Nora Roberts isn’t really an author that I have picked up, which is strange because her one other book that I have read, ‘The Witness’ is one of my favourite books (Which i still need to review)

It also isn’t a secret that Nora’s pseudonym is J.D. Robb, and her hugely successful ‘In Death’ series is something that keeps getting recommended to me time and time again, but quite frankly the size intimidates me (insert joke here)

Anyhoo, Audible UK had a Boxing Day sale, and I may (or may not) have seen all of the books for £2.99 and went a bit crazy…12 books crazy! This was one of my bargain buys, so I thought let’s try it.

My Thoughts

4 Dystopian Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Looking at the cover picture, I honestly thought that this was going to be a fantasy book…and it is, but it also isn’t, clear as mud right?

I was crossing my fingers that this wasn’t going to be a High Fantasy book, I’ve tried so many times to read them, and each time I’ve failed…HUZZAH…It isn’t!

The story starts on New Years Eve, and here begins the end!

After the Doom Virus is contracted, it soon starts to spread like a plague, first through the hospital, then to the streets, then to the rest of the world, wiping out EVERYONE!

Well, almost everyone, you see some people seem to be immune to the virus, a good thing right? But some of these people also seem to have developed a side effect of the virus, giving different magical powers to those left alive that varies from person to person.

Some have developed wings (Fairies) some have ‘The Sight’ some can also Shape-Shift, these people are now known as Uncannies, and are very unwelcome.

We watch three separate groups, coming to realise that they are probably the only people left, we watch them try to survive in a place that is now full of people that wish to do more harm than good, how would a pregnant woman cope?

We see how people help each other out, and how power hungry others can get when faced with certain decisions.

🎧🎧 – Narrated by Julia Whelan

You won’t be surprised to hear that Julia Whelan is one of my favourite narrators, in fact, if I hadn’t seen that she was narrating this book, then I probably wouldn’t have picked it up, because as I mentioned earlier, I thought this was going to be a High Fantasy book.

As usual, Julia gives a fantastic performance, her narration always makes me feel comfortable, and wraps me up in her gorgeous warm blanket voice.

If you are thinking about trying a new genre and are a little worried about it, then give this one a shot, I’m so glad I did, and will be adding book 2 to my Audible Wishlist

Review

Well i certainly didn’t see that one coming in this one!

All the Little Lights is a YA book with a cracking little twist in it, the book is based around Catherine and Elliot.

Friends since they were young children, Catherine and Elliot spent every minute they could together, walking and talking, and Elliot taking pictures with his camera that he seems to be surgically attached to.

They were very sweet together, and they made plans to travel the world together when they grow up…..except that doesn’t happen, Elliot’s mother hates the town, and the people in it, she grew up there and was bullied because of her heritage, her family are Cherokee and she was not made welcome in the town.

She doesn’t want this happening to her son (even though he’s quite popular) so she literally drags Elliot to the car one day and takes him away, the thing is that she doesn’t give him a chance to say goodbye, and on this particular day Catherine really needs him.

With no access to phones and his father taking away his car, Elliot has no way of getting in touch with Catherine to apologise, and it stays this way for 2 years!

In the meantime Catherine is helping her Mother keep their guesthouse in shape by working herself to near exhaustion with the cleaning / cooking etc, as well as keeping up with her schoolwork.

The guests are very “in-your-face” and won’t hardly leave her alone, and some of them downright scare her.

Catherine has never forgiven Elliot for leaving her, so when he shows up out-of- the-blue asking for forgiveness she has to make a decision on whether she wants to spend time with him, or help out at the guesthouse where her mother is slipping into a more depressed state.

In the middle of this story pops up another one, a girl in Catherine’s class goes missing, and the finger seems to be pointing in Elliot’s direction…….

With a twist that i actually didn’t see coming for a change, i thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The reason why i didn’t 5 star it, is because it was very lengthy, there was a lot of mundane information that i feel could have been skipped that wouldn’t have impacted the story at all, and still kept me interested.

🎧🎧 Narrated by 2 new narrators for me Karissa Vacker and Darrell Dennis, both did a great job but i think Karrissa may have stolen the show on this one, she was excellent.

Phew! This was a relief, i read this book a few years ago and was worried about revisiting it, but Huzzah! I still loved this book.

This little cracker of a book can be found free on Kindle, and thats exactly how i found it last time, this time i listened to it.

Saira is a young girl that hasn’t really had the best upbringing, moved around from pillar to post her mother disappears, nothing new, she does that for days or even weeks at a time, and Saira can look after herself.

As a freerunner Saira loves the freedom of the city, and often leaves her “tag” in places she has stopped at, unfortunately this time she gets caught by the cops, and with her mother not there, she gets shipped off to stay with her Grandmother in London, who isn’t best pleased to see her, considering she threw Saira’s mother out.

Meeting new people and travelling around London is a new experience for Saira, and being chased by a strange man calling her “Clocker” has her hiding in a tube station.
She notices an old “tag” there and puts her fingers on it to trace and admire it…….big mistake!

Turns out that Saira is a Clocker, someone who can travel through time, and she finds herself in 1888 and being chased by no other than Jack the Ripper, and she’s sure she also spotted her mother at some point!

Finding her way back to present day she learns the family history, and also that things like Werewolves, Shifters and Seers exist!

Oh and she also meets Archer, who is a vampire!

For someone who is not a Paranormal fan i was truly engaged in this story, even though it had vampires and wolves in it, it didn’t focus on the “magicky” part of it, if that makes sense.

It’s like a Harry Potter meets Oliver Twist meets the White Chapel murders!

WOW!!!!

I listened to this bad boy all in one sitting, and i loved every single guitar picking second of it!

Rachel has always known that she had a famous father, her mother told her when she was very young, however she never told her any of the important information, like how they met, or stories about him.
The only thing she knew is that her father didn’t want her, and her mother didn’t like him, or men in general for that matter!

This unfortunately fuels Rachel’s fire and she uses this as a weapon against her mother by downloading all of his tracks, and putting posters of her father on her bedroom walls.

Rachel has never met, seen, or spoken to her father, but after her mother dies she has the chance of moving out of the Social Services children’s home, and moving in with her father, who turns up to meet, and claim her.

This story takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions, from the sweet grin that you give when she exchanges emails with Jake …….*swoon* to the fist pump in the air when she decides that maybe Freddie isn’t a complete douchebag after all!

I love the fact that Freddie didn’t turn into “superdad” all of a sudden and he had his fair share of f*ck ups, and i love the relationship between Haze & Rachel (Could be Hayes, not sure of spelling as on audio)

Considering this is the authors first step into YA she did a brilliant job made it seem like it’s her normal genre, for anyone that’s read any of Sarina Bowen’s other books you would know that it isn’t 😉

🎧🎧 Narrated by the always awesome and talented Kate Rudd, this book was brilliantly narrated and I would recommend it to anyone.

This one is well worth a credit get ready for those feels.
