A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson @HoJay92 #bookreview

Hello book friends, I hope you are all doing well?

Let me introduce you to your new obsession!!

My Review

Pippa (Pip for short) is working on a school project for her final year, choosing a topic is difficult and she is finding it really hard. She wants to be a journalist when she leaves school, so wants to really prove her worth.

So what is the best thing to do as a budding journalist? Well investigate a crime of course! But not any old crime, she decides to investigate a crime from 5 years ago, where a young girl in the town was murdered by her boyfriend, only she thinks that he didn’t do it, and she’s going to prove it!

A body was never found, and some blood in a car, and a text on the evening of the murder was all the police needed to pin the murder on Andrea Bell’s boyfriend Sal, but little things seem to be out of place for Pip, because Sal then killed himself in the local woods, which then adds to the guilty verdict.

And so her final year project is chosen, Pip along with the help of Sal’s younger brother Ravi, start to investigate the murder, but not everyone wants her to interfere into something that is already closed!

For a debut novel this was such a fun read, and I’ve already bought book 2, although I’m holding out for the audiobook.

🎧🎧

Narration was so brilliantly done, it is a full cast, and done exquisitely, if you loved Sadie last year, then you’ll love this one too.

What I’m Looking For by Karen Grey @KarenWhitereads @TheRealJoeArden #AudiobookReview

Hello book friends, I hope you are all well?

I was asked by the lovely Karen White (Pen name Karen Grey) to review this wonderful audiobook, and I’m so glad I said YES, as it was so good!!

Also, just look at that stunning cover!!!

22822858._SY475_

My Review

This book was so much fun, taking us back to the 80’s we meet the very awkward Kate Bishop, she is a financial analyst working in an all male office. She tries her best to fit in and be one-of-the-boys, but she mostly fails miserably.

She is brilliant at her job, but she has problems with speaking in front of people, and has trouble with social cues.

While trying to impress her work colleagues, she agrees to go to a social gathering at the local bar, this is where she meets Will, an actor/bartender, who notices how uncomfortable she is, and offers her a drink that won’t end up with her on the bar floor as she really doesn’t do well with alcohol.

Although these two people shouldn’t fit together they do brilliantly, Kate being her usual awkward self doesn’t immediately see the connection, while the Shakespeare spouting young Will does feel a spark.

With lots of 80’s references throughout the book, and the narration by the always brilliant Joe Arden, and the fabulous narration by the author herself, Karen Grey/White has made an instant new fan in me.

It was cute, very funny, and sometimes cringeworthy with some of the characters antics!

The audiobook was done brilliantly, and I loved the added extras such as the answering machine voicemails that were left, it made me very nostalgic.

All in all it was a great read, and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next, I wonder if we will have a story for “hot Steve”?

**Thank you so much to Karen White/Grey for reaching out and asking me to review this book, I had so much fun listening to it**

Synopsis

Recipe for a Boston Classic Cocktail: one part finance geek, one part starving actor, two shots of stubborn and a healthy squeeze of passion. Shake well and serve in a vintage glass.

When Kate Bishop walks into Boston’s famous Bull and Finch pub, all she’s looking for is one guy from her investment firm that she can trust to have her back—a tall order. With a salesman at her side, maybe stage fright won’t paralyze her completely when she presents her meticulously prepared research to clients. And maybe she can save her job.

Romance is the last thing on her to-do list, but a meet-cute with a Shakespeare-quoting bartender has her speculating on the value of diversifying her life portfolio.

Will Talbot is not a fan of the slick financiers who cram into his bar after each day’s closing bell. With their calls for Harvey Wallbangers and their Hermès ties, they’re all the same.

Except for a certain beautiful, buttoned-up brunette with fire in her eyes and a storm in her heart. They’re totally wrong for each other. He should be focusing on his upcoming audition, not coaching Kate on how to act like she’s a bona fide member of the Gordon Gekko club.

Problem is, they can’t seem to stay away from each other.

The course of true love never did run smooth, but in this 1980’s sweet-and-sexy rom-com, returns on love can’t be measured on the S&P 500

Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D Jackson @WriteinBK @Harper360UK #bookreview

Hello book friends,

I hope you are all doing well and not suffering too much in this heat, us UK’ers are not used to it LOL

I am so happy to bring you a review for this stunning book

36285129._SY475_

My Review

I received this gorgeous covered book by Harper 360 and I was super excited to read it, I also wanted to start reading more books by Black Authors and Own Voices, and helping out more, so I also purchased the Audio version, so this will be a review for both!

Set in Brooklyn 1998 we follow 3 friends, Quadir, Jarrell and Jasmine.

The book starts at the funeral of Quadir and Jarrell’s best friend Steph, Jasmine is Steph’s little sister, who was shot, and murdered.

Jasmine takes herself off into Steph’s bedroom for a moment to herself, and is soon followed by the 2 boys, they then find Steph’s stash of tapes of his own music under his bed, and notebooks of lyrics.

The 3 kids are so in awe of how brilliant Steph’s music is, that they decide that the whole world needs to hear it, but how do they get it heard, especially when the artist himself is dead and they themselves are only teenagers?

Well, being in Brooklyn, the Rap scene was the place to be, and while managing to get CD’s printed and a few well-connected people to listen, they manage to get Steph’s music noticed, and by changing his name to “The Architect” they didn’t have to mention the fact that Steph isn’t around anymore.

But what happens when a big time record producer want to meet the Artist? And how were the kids to know that some of the lyrics could cause a lot of trouble for everyone?

🎧🎧

The narration for this book was by a full cast and it was fabulous, the lyrics are Rapped and very poignant for the late 90’s and also today.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, grab it if you can.

**Many thanks to Harper 360 for sending me a copy of this beautiful book**

Synopsis

In this standalone novel, Tiffany D. Jackson tells the story of three Brooklyn teens who plot to turn their murdered friend into a major rap star by pretending he is still alive.

Biggie Smalls was right. Things done changed. But that doesn’t mean that Quadir and Jarrell are okay letting their best friend Steph’s tracks lie forgotten in his bedroom after he’s killed—not when his beats could turn any Bed-Stuy corner into a celebration, not after years of having each other’s backs.

Enlisting the help of Steph’s younger sister, Jasmine, Quadir and Jarrell come up with a plan to promote Steph’s music under a new rap name: The Architect. Soon, everyone in Brooklyn is dancing to Steph’s voice. But then his mixtape catches the attention of a hotheaded music rep and—with just hours on the clock—the trio must race to prove Steph’s talent from beyond the grave.

Now, as the pressure—and danger—of keeping their secret grows, Quadir, Jarrell, and Jasmine are forced to confront the truth about what happened to Steph. Only each has something to hide. And with everything riding on Steph’s fame, together they need to decide what they stand for before they lose everything they’ve worked so hard to hold on to—including each other

Be Not far from Me by Mindy McGinnis @MindyMcGinnis #BookReview #BeNotFarFromMe

Hello book friends,

How are you in a panic situation, are you calm and collected, or do you lose your head?

This is the situation our main character finds herself in, and I am in awe!!!

44422774

My Review

Whelp, if this book doesn’t put you off of EVER going camping again, then I don’t know what will!

This is another superb book by Mindy McGinnis, totally different as usual, I love the way that she is not afraid to mix up her themes, and this one certainly will certainly mix you up!!

Ashley is a teenage girl, but she’s not a ‘girly girl’ oh no, she loves everything outdoorsy, and checking out things like animal bones to find out how they dies, is like a walk in the park to her…literally.

But a camping trip with her friends turns all of that on its head!

After drinking too much and falling asleep, Ashley wakes up still pretty drunk and dying for a pee.

After finding a place to relieve herself, far enough from everyone to see and still half naked, she hears a noise and goes to investigate, and sees her boyfriend doing the nasty with one of the girls, worse still it’s his Ex who she hates!

Ashley gets spotted so she runs away from the situation as she’s obviously upset, but unfortunately not watching where she is going, tumbles down a ravine and gets knocked out. It’s only when she wakes in the morning she realises that she is alone in the forest, she doesn’t know where she is, she has no supplies at all, she’s nearly naked, and should her foot really be that colour??

Although the book is 90% Ashley’s POV, I didn’t find myself getting bored at all, in fact I was on the edge of my seat rooting for her, some of the things that she has to do to save her own life made me gasp out loud, flinch and also gag a little.
I absolutely know that if I was in the same situation as Ashley, I would probably manage a day at most, maybe only a couple of hours before giving up, but who can you have to save you if not yourself?

Narrated by Brittany Pressley who is a fantastic narrator and is soon becoming one of my auto-buy authors, grab this one if you can guys.

Hello again Book Friends,

I’m so happy to be on the blog tour for this fabulous YA read.

My Thoughts

Followers, follows 2 characters, Orla and Marlow, we get alternating chapters for both of them, Orla’s is set in 2015, and Marlow’s is set in 2051, both in New York.

In 2015, Orla is working as a blogger, she is desperate to write a book and to become a real author, but currently she works at an office blogging about the latest celebrity handbag or hairstyle, that is until she meets Floss, she is a fame hungry wannabe, and ends up renting a room in Orla’s apartment.

Orla and Floss soon become firm friends, and with Orla knowing just what to say, the two girls manage to place Floss in the right place at the right time, and this as they say is history, and Floss becomes the most famous Instagram girl on the planet.

Marlow, well Marlow is famous, just for being famous, you see, she lives in Constellation, the Truman Show of New York, everyone knows who Marlow is, and everyone can see what she does, says, wears, eats, everything!

The chips that have been planted into everyone’s brains in 2051 after ‘The Spill’ help them tune into the “show” via ‘brainwave’, and even thoughts are pushed through to Marlow, even if it isn’t directly her doing it “I really should drink another litre of water as my skin is dehydrating”

With designer lives, and designer pills to help Marlow be the perfect product that she is, why would anyone want to give-up their millions of ‘followers’ and ‘likes’ to be a nobody?

This book was so cleverly written and had a very ‘Black Mirror’ vibe to it, it shows the price of fame, and what some people will do to gain, or to lose it, and also the power that social media has over people.

For a debut novel, I can see big things for Ms Angelo as it was a fantastic read, I can’t wait to see what she does next.

An electrifying story of two ambitious friends, the dark choices they make and the profound moment that changes the meaning of privacy forever.
Orla Cadden dreams of literary success, but she’s stuck writing about movie-star hookups and influencer yoga moves. Orla has no idea how to change her life until her new roommate, Floss―a striving, wannabe A-lister―comes up with a plan for launching them both into the high-profile lives they so desperately crave. But it’s only when Orla and Floss abandon all pretense of ethics that social media responds with the most terrifying feedback of all: overwhelming success.
Thirty-five years later, in a closed California village where government-appointed celebrities live every moment of the day on camera, a woman named Marlow discovers a shattering secret about her past. Despite her massive popularity―twelve million loyal followers―Marlow dreams of fleeing the corporate sponsors who would do anything, even horrible things, to keep her on-screen. When she learns that her whole family history is a lie, Marlow finally summons the courage to run in search of the truth, no matter the risks.
Followers traces the paths of Orla, Floss and Marlow as they wind through time toward each other, and toward a cataclysmic event that sends America into lasting upheaval. At turns wry and tender, bleak and hopeful, this darkly funny story reminds us that even if we obsess over famous people we’ll never meet, what we really crave is genuine human connection.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett @Kim_Liggett @PRHAudio #KimLiggett #TheGraceYear #BookReview

Hello book friends,

I hope you are having a wonderful day, I’m here to bring you a review for a new YA Dystopian read that will be coming to the Big Screen near you soon.

Rumour has it that Elizabeth Banks is directing and producing it so it’s sure to be a hit!

My Thoughts

🅷🅰🅽🅳🅼🅰🅸🅳🆂 🅼🅴🅴🆃🆂 🅺🅰🆃🅽🅸🆂🆂 🅴🆅🅴🆁🅳🅴🅴🅽

🅼🅴🅴🆃🆂 🅻🅾🆁🅳 🅾🅵 🆃🅷🅴 🅵🅻🅸🅴🆂

The Grace Year is a bit like Fight Club, as in, no-one speaks of it, in fact you are not *allowed* to speak about it.

All you know is that when you get to a certain age (16) you start to release your “Magic” and this magic is what lures men to their knees, you at 16 years of age could entrance a grown man from is married bed into yours, just by the smell of your skin! (insert eye roll here)

Because as we all know Men rule the roost and heaven forbid a girl actually grows into a woman and a man can’t keep his hands (and other things) to himself!

And so, these poor girls, in packs have to go and spend a year banished into the woods, so that they can “release their magic” and then come back all purified and shit, to be married off to whomever the men decide.

And this is what happens to our main character Tierney James, she doesn’t want to go, but she has to be seen to be obeying the rules.

But she doesn’t want to go, she’s heard all of the rumours about the poachers out there that hunt the girls, and the last few years some of the girls haven’t even made it back alive!

Escaping poachers is one thing, but what happens when the pack starts to turn on itself?

A really clever YA take on a Dystopian that is in the same vein as The Handmaids Tale and The Hunger Games, it’s sure to be a big hit with many.

Narrated by Emily Shaffer, who did a great job and has just the right voice for a young teenage girl.

The resistance starts here….
No one speaks of the grace year.
It’s forbidden.
We’re told we have the power to lure grown men from their beds, make boys lose their minds, and drive the wives mad with jealousy. That’s why we’re banished for our 16th year, to release our magic into the wild before we’re allowed to return to civilisation. But I don’t feel powerful. I don’t feel magical.
Tierney James lives in an isolated village where girls are banished at 16 to the northern forest to brave the wilderness – and each other – for a year. They must rid themselves of their dangerous magic before returning purified and ready to marry – if they’re lucky.
It is forbidden to speak of the grace year, but even so every girl knows that the coming year will change them – if they survive it….
The Grace Year is The Handmaid’s Tale meets Lord of the Flies – a feminist dystopia about a young woman trapped in an oppressive society, fighting to take control of her own life.

Hello book friends,

I’m super happy to bring you my review for the audiobook that has been released for this lovely story – if it sounds slightly familiar, it is because Berit reviewed the book a few weeks ago Here.

Thank you to Avon books UK for choosing me for this Audio Tour.

My Thoughts

This was a lovely slow burn romance book told from the POV of Jess and Alex.

Jess is 29 and has recently moved to London for a new job opportunity, she can’t afford to pay the extortionate rental prices there, so she rents a room in a house with new housemates.

After arriving at the house and being introduced to everyone, she notices Alex, the male nurse who is sharing her floor with her and thinks Yummy!

There wasn’t insta-love so much as an insta-connection, but Jess is fully aware of the house rules that have been set for everyone, and one of those, is NO RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HOUSEMATES.

So that’s that!

But is isn’t quite, Jess and Alex bond as friends and often go around exploring London and all of it’s hidden gems, but Alex is secretly seeing one of the housemates Emma, much to Jess’s dismay, and because she has been ‘friend-zoned’ decides to try her hand at online dating, to which Alex is a little crestfallen as he secretly likes Jess.

Although this is called We met In December, it is not a Christmassy book as the book spans a whole year between the characters, and throughout gives a will-they-won’t-they vibe.

But I will say that the snippets about Christmas and the way that the author describes London at that time of year, really got me into the Xmas spirit.

🎧🎧

Narrated by Finlay Robertson and Jessica Preddy, who both did fantastic jobs, I was thoroughly entertained throughout the whole book and will definitely look for books narrated by them again.

My Thoughts

🅻🅶🅱🆃 🅼🅴🅴🆃🆂 🅷🅸🆃🅲🅷🅲🅾🅲🅺

As soon as I read the synopsis for this book, I knew I had to read it.

A YA gay thriller, where the MC wakes up next to a dead guy!!!

I mean…who wouldn’t want to read that??  Sign. Me. Up!

Aidan is our protagonist in this story, he is 17 years old, and is staying the night in a hotel in New York.

As any young red-blooded male would do, Aidan picks up his phone, and logs into his “Dirty Paws” app (think Grindr) to find himself a hookup for the evening.

Except when he wakes up after his little tryst, his partner for the evening is dead!

After looking around the room to find out what the hell is going on, Aidan finds the mans phone, and looking through it, finds pictures, lot and lots of pictures…of him!

After noticing a small hole in the window, and a terrifying call from an unknown person claiming to know what he has done and who he is, Aidan finds himself on the run, from his friends, from the FBI, and what seems to be some kind of Cult.

This is a case of mistaken identity going horribly wrong, and I loved every second of it, and the nod to Hitchcock throughout the book was fantastic.

Aidan is such a great character, he has a very dry sense of humour and is very self deprecating, which I found adorable, It is a very British thing to do, so I instantly connected with him.

Lots of twist and turns in this one, so make sure your head is screwed on tight, otherwise you may just lose it!

🎧🎧

Narrated by Jay Ben Markson, who was just a wonderful voice for Aidan, I absolutely loved his mannerisms and narration style.

Grab this one when you can, you won’t regret it!

An epic case of mistaken identity puts a teen looking for a hookup on the run from both the FBI and a murderous cult in this compulsively listenable thriller.
Finding himself alone in a posh New York City hotel room for the night, Aidan does what any red-blooded 17-year-old would do – tries to hook up with someone new. But that lapse in judgement leads him to a room with a dead guy and a mysterious flash drive…two things that spark an epic case of mistaken identity that puts Aidan on the run – from the authorities, his friends, his family, the people who are out to kill him – and especially from his own troubled past.
Inspired by a Hitchcock classic, this whirlwind mistaken-identity caper has razor-sharp humor, devastating emotional stakes, and a thrilling storyline with an explosive conclusion to make this the most compelling YA novel of 2019.

My heart just about broke in half reading this book

Scars Like Wings follows 16 yr old Ava Lee a year after she was horrifically burned in a house fire, that took the life of her parents, and her best friend.

She lost everything that day, her home, her family and even her identity, because now she doesn’t even look like herself, as although Ava was pulled out of the fire, she sustained 60% of burns across her whole body.

After many, many operations (19) her aunt and uncle who she now lives with, decide that it would be best for her to go back to school, to put some “normal” back into her life.

But Ava doesn’t look normal, she knows this, and so does everyone else that stares at her and call her names.

After nearly giving up on the whole school situation, Ava meets a girl called Piper who is a fellow survivor, and later a boy called Asad, who is a theatre nerd just like her.

But soon Ava discovers that some scars on the inside are not always so easy to see.

I was sobbing reading this book, there were some truly touching moments, and I read the whole book pretty much like this:

Welcome to Innovations Academy, the boarding school that will help your daughter become her best self.

We will teach her to be a smart young girl, we will teach her lessons of life, and we we absolutely make sure that she will learn to keep her pretty little mouth shut!

Oh, you caught that last bit did you?

You see, here at Innovations Academy, we like to teach our girls, all 12 of them, that they are not important, worthy of anything and also that their opinion doesn’t mean anything at all, they are just girls, and everyone knows that a woman’s voice is so much better when it is not heard!

No, we will teach them how to sew, we will give them proper vitamins every day, we will give them a balanced diet (we don’t want them getting fat) and we will also schedule sports to tone up those flabby muscles!

The Guardians here can sometimes be a little “over-zealous” but don’t you worry about that, I mean who needs to hear about any problems, not us Hahahaha…..no we have a special councillor here that the girls can speak to and make all of their problems disappear!!

Philomena, Mena for short, is one of the 12 lucky girls that have been picked to go to this highly prestigious school, and she loves it here, for the most part, her friends are the best thing about the school, and she loves them fiercely.

They talk about things that normal teenagers do, boys, sex, kissing, but not in front of the teachers, talking about boys is strictly prohibited, they all know that their parents will allocate them a husband when they graduate.

They must learn to be beautiful, respectful, and to obey everything their husbands ask of them.

You are at this academy to become better girls—the best girls. That means you are”—he counts on his fingers—“beautiful, quiet, and pure. Take the last part away and you’re not special. You’re a common whore.” Several girls flinch at the statement

I know what you are thinking while reading this review…….am I right?
