The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix @grady_hendrix narrated by @TheRealBahniT #bookreview

Hello book friends, I hope you are all doing well?

I am not a huge paranormal reader, but occasionally one hits my radar and I have to check it out!

This was the book that did it for me!

44074800._SY475_

My Review

Ok so I have to admit, this was a bit of a “Bookstagram made me do it” kind of thing, everyone was talking about this one, and I don’t like to be left out Lol

So I had a spare Audible credit, and checked to see who was narrating it, when I saw it was my favourite narrator Bahni Turpin, I was sold!!

I’m so glad I did, because I loved it!!

There is something about a book set in the South that gets me all grabby, I’m not sure if it is the accent (I think that’s what it is) or just the thought of one day travelling there myself, but I’m all in either way.

Hailed as Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula, this book is exactly what it says on the tin, a Southern Book Club.

Patricia is our MC in this story, she is married with a couple of kids, and is in a marriage that isn’t perfect, her kids are brats, and her husband need Yeeting into a distant planet in my opinion!
The only thing that Patrica looks forward to every week is her Book Club, with the other local women of the Charleston neighbourhood.
After a rocky start with the group, with book choices etc. they eventually start reading True Crime stories and Thrillers.

When a handsome stranger moves into the neighbourhood, he is the new topic of conversation amongst the women, and Patricia in particular is intrigued.

She gets even more intrigued after a series of incidents involving children, especially after they go missing.

Patricia automatically goes back to her True Crime novels and assumes that the new stranger is involved and is some kind of serial killer, but she uncovers something a lot darker than she expected.

I absolutely loved this story, it was funny but also dark in some places, a few people have said that it was gory, I didn’t find that myself, but I am a Horror reader, and this wasn’t gory to me at all, but I can see some parts being a bit gruesome for some.

🎧🎧

I would absolutely recommend the Audiobook, Bahni Turpin is an absolute genius at narration as always, she always brings an extra oomf to a story, and that is why she is my favourite! If you have never listened to her before, please check her out as she is absolutely brilliant and deserves every award that she receives.

Enjoy

The Blurb

Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a real monster.
Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.
This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in 20 years. But there’s something off about him. He doesn’t have a bank account, he doesn’t like going out during the day, and Patricia’s mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl, an impossibility.
When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik, but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes?

Q by Christina Dalcha @CVDalcher @HQstories #QBook #OnlyThePerfect

Hello book friends,

I hope you are all staying safe and reading some wonderful books, or if not reading then catching up with your favourite TV shows?

Whatever you are doing, I hope that you are all doing ok.

I’m happy to bring you a review for this fabulous Dystopian read, from the author that brought you VOX.

43247722._SY475_

My Review

Welcome to the scary mind of Christina Dalcher, buckle up buttercup, it’s a bumpy ride!

Elena Fairchild is a teacher at a Silver school, this is an elite school for children, and teachers that have a high Q (IQ) score.

She is married to Malcolm who works in the Department of Education, and has two beautiful daughters Anne and Freddie.
Elena’s Q score automatically gets a bump-up for being married, and for Malcolm having such a high profile job.

Both of her daughters are at the silver school, they are both doing very well with their education, although Freddie sometimes needs a little help.

But, what happens to those people with lower Q scores?

Well with a high Q you get higher privileges, quicker lines at the supermarkets, better jobs, better neighbourhoods etc.

Depending how low the Q scores are, they can go down into the Green section, or if it is really low, the Yellow section.

With monthly testing, it is within your best interest to keep your Q score up, everyone can see everyone else’s scores too, so there is an added incentive to keep your score high, or higher than your friends & neighbours.

It is time for the monthly Q test, and Elena is naturally worried for her kids, not so much Anne who is obsessed with everyone else’s scores, and who is also Malcolm’s favourite child, she is the brightest of the two children, Freddie however seems to be a very anxious child and is prone to episodes of blocking people out, she is not looking forward to the test.

Every child looks out for their school bus, but always keep their heads down when they see the Yellow Bus arrive, you see, the Yellow bus as I mentioned before signifies that you or your child got a very low Q score, you will then be collected by the Yellow Bus and taken to a school/job that you are more ‘suited’ to out of the area/county, what that really means is “out of sight, out of mind” these people do not tend to come back!

It doesn’t really matter when it happens to somebody else’s kids, but when Freddie gets her Yellow Card through the post. Elena seems to realise that she may never see her daughter again, and she seems to be the only one bothered by it!

I really enjoyed this dystopian read, and it really made me think about where I would be in this hierarchy, I definitely think I would have been on the Yellow Bus!!

Released today – HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY

Synopsis

Elena Fairchild is a teacher at one of the state’s new elite schools. Her daughters are exactly like her: beautiful, ambitious, and perfect. A good thing, since the recent mandate that’s swept the country is all about perfection.
Now everyone must undergo routine tests for their quotient, Q, and any children who don’t measure up are placed into new government schools. Instead, teachers can focus on the gifted. Elena tells herself it’s not about eugenics, not really, but when one of her daughters scores lower than expected and is taken away, she intentionally fails her own test to go with her.
But what Elena discovers is far more terrifying than she ever imagined…

Hello again Book Friends,

I’m so happy to be on the blog tour for this fabulous YA read.

TheDilemma_BTB

My Thoughts

Followers, follows 2 characters, Orla and Marlow, we get alternating chapters for both of them, Orla’s is set in 2015, and Marlow’s is set in 2051, both in New York.

In 2015, Orla is working as a blogger, she is desperate to write a book and to become a real author, but currently she works at an office blogging about the latest celebrity handbag or hairstyle, that is until she meets Floss, she is a fame hungry wannabe, and ends up renting a room in Orla’s apartment.

Orla and Floss soon become firm friends, and with Orla knowing just what to say, the two girls manage to place Floss in the right place at the right time, and this as they say is history, and Floss becomes the most famous Instagram girl on the planet.

Marlow, well Marlow is famous, just for being famous, you see, she lives in Constellation, the Truman Show of New York, everyone knows who Marlow is, and everyone can see what she does, says, wears, eats, everything!

The chips that have been planted into everyone’s brains in 2051 after ‘The Spill’ help them tune into the “show” via ‘brainwave’, and even thoughts are pushed through to Marlow, even if it isn’t directly her doing it “I really should drink another litre of water as my skin is dehydrating”

With designer lives, and designer pills to help Marlow be the perfect product that she is, why would anyone want to give-up their millions of ‘followers’ and ‘likes’ to be a nobody?

This book was so cleverly written and had a very ‘Black Mirror’ vibe to it, it shows the price of fame, and what some people will do to gain, or to lose it, and also the power that social media has over people.

For a debut novel, I can see big things for Ms Angelo as it was a fantastic read, I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Enjoy

An electrifying story of two ambitious friends, the dark choices they make and the profound moment that changes the meaning of privacy forever.
Orla Cadden dreams of literary success, but she’s stuck writing about movie-star hookups and influencer yoga moves. Orla has no idea how to change her life until her new roommate, Floss―a striving, wannabe A-lister―comes up with a plan for launching them both into the high-profile lives they so desperately crave. But it’s only when Orla and Floss abandon all pretense of ethics that social media responds with the most terrifying feedback of all: overwhelming success.
Thirty-five years later, in a closed California village where government-appointed celebrities live every moment of the day on camera, a woman named Marlow discovers a shattering secret about her past. Despite her massive popularity―twelve million loyal followers―Marlow dreams of fleeing the corporate sponsors who would do anything, even horrible things, to keep her on-screen. When she learns that her whole family history is a lie, Marlow finally summons the courage to run in search of the truth, no matter the risks.
Followers traces the paths of Orla, Floss and Marlow as they wind through time toward each other, and toward a cataclysmic event that sends America into lasting upheaval. At turns wry and tender, bleak and hopeful, this darkly funny story reminds us that even if we obsess over famous people we’ll never meet, what we really crave is genuine human connection.

The Institute by Stephen King @StephenKing @HodderBooks @SantinoFontana #TheInstitute #StephenKing #BookReview #ViccisBestBooksof2019

Happy New Year book friends,

2019 was a great year for reading, and I had a great time doing it!

Here is a late entry for me that I read in November.

43798285

My Thoughts

Oh My, I have finally found a new favourite Stephen King since 11.22.63

This one came with a slow start, I couldn’t really see where it was heading, and then a few chapters later, BAM I was invested!

This book follows 12 year old Luke Ellis, who is a normal boy, well except for the fact that he can move things with his mind, but he thinks that is just normal really, it doesn’t happen all the time, just when he’s mad.

Except, you and I both know that it isn’t normal, and so do the people that break into his house one night, kill his parents, kidnap him, and take him to The Institute.

We also meet Tim, an ex Cop, who was on his way to somewhere completely different, until he decides at the last minute to gives up his seat on a packed flight, and then just goes on his merry way. He finds a random old town, and gets a job as a Night Knocker, that he is way overqualified for, but seems to enjoy, and everything in his life seems to be going Hunky-Dory.

Luke has woken up in his bedroom, except is isn’t his, it just looks like it, turns out, that The Institute has a lot of kids just like Luke, and they are subjected to some horrific experiments by the adults in charge.

Do Luke and Tim have a connection? Well it wouldn’t be a SK if people were randomly shoved in his story for no reason would it?

Am I going to tell you what the connection is? OF COURSE NOT YOU FOOLS!!!

If you loved watching shows like Stranger Things, or reading SK’s older books like Firestarter, or even newer books like The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken or Vicious by V E Schwab (personal favourites of mine) then you will LOVE this book!

It reads more like a YA than most of his books, so don’t let the STEPHEN KING thing scare you, if you’ve never read any of his books before, then this would be a great starter for you.

Mr King is not known as The King for nothing, his books are usually huge, and this one is no exception, but if you go in knowing that it is going to be a wild ride, then you are going to have a great time.

🎧🎧

When I knew that Santino Fontana was narrating this one, I just KNEW that I was going to love it, if you’ve already listened to YOU by Caroline Kepnes then you’ll know what I mean (if you haven’t, what are you waiting for, add it to your never ending TBR)

Narration = Perfection
Story = Perfection
Me = Happy
Stephen = KING!

Deep in the woods of Maine, there is a dark state facility where kids, abducted from across the United States, are incarcerated. In the Institute they are subjected to a series of tests and procedures meant to combine their exceptional gifts – telepathy, telekinesis – for concentrated effect.
Luke Ellis is the latest recruit. He’s just a regular 12-year-old, except he’s not just smart, he’s super-smart. And he has another gift which the Institute wants to use….
Far away in a small town in South Carolina, former cop Tim Jamieson has taken a job working for the local Sheriff. He’s basically just walking the beat. But he’s about to take on the biggest case of his career.
Back in the Institute’s downtrodden playground and corridors where posters advertise ‘just another day in paradise’, Luke, his friend Kalisha and the other kids are in no doubt that they are prisoners, not guests. And there is no hope of escape.
But great events can turn on small hinges, and Luke is about to team up with a new, even younger recruit, Avery Dixon, whose ability to read minds is off the scale. While the Institute may want to harness their powers for covert ends, the combined intelligence of Luke and Avery is beyond anything that even those who run the experiments – even the infamous Mrs Sigsby – suspect.
Thrilling, suspenseful, heartbreaking, The Institute is a stunning novel of childhood betrayed and hope regained.

Welcome to Innovations Academy, the boarding school that will help your daughter become her best self.

We will teach her to be a smart young girl, we will teach her lessons of life, and we we absolutely make sure that she will learn to keep her pretty little mouth shut!

Oh, you caught that last bit did you?

You see, here at Innovations Academy, we like to teach our girls, all 12 of them, that they are not important, worthy of anything and also that their opinion doesn’t mean anything at all, they are just girls, and everyone knows that a woman’s voice is so much better when it is not heard!

No, we will teach them how to sew, we will give them proper vitamins every day, we will give them a balanced diet (we don’t want them getting fat) and we will also schedule sports to tone up those flabby muscles!

The Guardians here can sometimes be a little “over-zealous” but don’t you worry about that, I mean who needs to hear about any problems, not us Hahahaha…..no we have a special councillor here that the girls can speak to and make all of their problems disappear!!

Philomena, Mena for short, is one of the 12 lucky girls that have been picked to go to this highly prestigious school, and she loves it here, for the most part, her friends are the best thing about the school, and she loves them fiercely.

They talk about things that normal teenagers do, boys, sex, kissing, but not in front of the teachers, talking about boys is strictly prohibited, they all know that their parents will allocate them a husband when they graduate.

They must learn to be beautiful, respectful, and to obey everything their husbands ask of them.

You are at this academy to become better girls—the best girls. That means you are”—he counts on his fingers—“beautiful, quiet, and pure. Take the last part away and you’re not special. You’re a common whore.” Several girls flinch at the statement

I know what you are thinking while reading this review…….am I right?

Well maybe you are wrong, maybe you need to dip your toe into this mind fu@k of a book and see for yourself!

Narrated by Caitlin Davies, a new to me narrator who did a fantastic job with this book, I will definitely be looking out for other books that she has narrated.

The Passengers by John Marrs @johnmarrs1 @DelReyUK #AudioBookreview #ThePassengers

Hello bookie buddies!!

I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday, when I woke up and realised it was only (insert any day here except Friday 😂) I was bitterly disappointed! – This is me Every. Single. Day

So in true grumpy style I decided to start another audio book, and this was the one I picked up.

Why Did You Pick It Up Vicci?

This will be the 4th book of John Marrs that I have read, and it certainly won’t be the last.

I love the way that he builds the story, and that you get really invested in the characters lives. And I’m super excited about his book “The One” that is soon to be a major Netflix series.

My Thoughts

𝔹𝕦𝕔𝕜𝕝𝕖 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕗 𝕚𝕟 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕒 𝕓𝕦𝕞𝕡𝕪 𝕣𝕚𝕕𝕖!

Set in a not-too-distant-future, Britain is now seeing self-drive cars on our roads every day, they are the saviour of our highways, as they help the environment, as well as cutting down traffic jams, they can see possible problems ahead, so will take alternative routes.

You can just get in the car, and relax, maybe sit and read the daily paper, maybe finish putting on your make-up, or because the windows turn opaque and let you play videos, you can sit and scroll through Facebook and Twitter on the way to work…Sounds great right?

And it is, everyone has embraced the future, except some, some people really don’t like these cars at all!

Libby is one of these people, she is called for jury duty, but not for what you think, these juries consist of just one member of the public, and they are held in secret to discuss accidents involving Driverless cars, and also to determine who (or what) is at fault.

Headed by the obnoxious MP Jack, the trial is in full swing when the hacker joins the conversation, and he makes it clear very quickly who is in charge!

You see, it turns out that the cars that “could never be hacked” actually could be, and the hacker will show you what happens when you do not pay attention.

A live feed has been set up on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram showing the courtroom and all of the Jurors, it also shows the random 8 people that are now stuck in their cars and are all driving to the same location, the exact location, meaning that they will all crash…but the hacker will allow one person to live, who decides that….Oh…it’s you!!

A wonderful read with a scary look into our near future.

Mr Marrs, I think Ron Weasley said it best:

Until the end of the World by Sarah Lyons Flemming @SLyonsFleming @justjuliawhelan #Audiobookreview #PostApocalyptic

Hello book friends,

I’m super happy to bring you a review for a new series that I think is going to keep me busy for a while as I couldn’t tear myself away from it.

Sorry for being MIA for a while, Real Life bitch-slapped me in the face for a while and I kind of got stuck in a bit of a slump!

But I think I’m back and ready to make up some lost time (and reviews!)

Why did you pick it up Vicci?

Well, I saw lots of people talking about this book in a Facebook group that I am in, and you know how I don’t like to be left out of anything!!

23121237

Well, I have found myself a new series to binge, I can’t wait to read the next one in this series, I was on the edge of my seat for most of it.

A genre that I wouldn’t usually read was being banded around on a FB group that i am in, then I heard the narrator, Julia Whelan…..and I was invested.

I promptly bagged the who series on KU and upgraded the Audio’s for £3.47 each!!! what a bargain!

Told in the POV of Cassie, we see her in her home town of New York, there seems to be some sort of “flu” epidemic that is sweeping the city, so people are being quite cautious, but until she gets a call from her friend explaining that people are dying and there is no cure does she really start to worry.

Her friends tells her to get out of town immediately, so her and her friends try and do just that, except it turns out that the people that are dying from this epidemic, have not done being dead yet!

This was such a great story, I was so invested in all of the characters, and they were all brilliantly narrated by the awesome Julia Whelan, one of my favourite narrators, ho bought every one of them to life in my head.

This is not a gory book, there is a little gruesome talk, but nothing too bad, if you liked The Walking Dead then you will probably like this, as it is about a group of people trying to survive.

Try it, You never know, you might like it!!

Book 1 is only £2.49 on audio or free on KU, what have you got to lose?
Until the End of the World – Book 1

About the book

Until the End of the World
By: Sarah Lyons Fleming
Narrated by: Julia Whelan
Series: Until the End of the World, Book 1
Length: 13 hrs and 14 mins
Publisher: Podium Publishing

Cassie Forrest isn’t surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk.

Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too. This is difficult enough, but Cassie’s tag along ex-boyfriend and her friend’s bratty sister have a knack for making everything, even the apocalypse, more unpleasant.

When the two attract a threat as deadly as the undead to their safe haven, Cassie’s forced to see how far she’ll go to protect those she loves. And it’s a lot farther than she’d anticipated. This, coupled with Adrian’s distant voice on Safe Zone Radio and, of course, the living dead, threaten to put Cassie right back into the funk she just dragged herself out of. Survival’s great and all, especially when you have leather armor, good friends and home-brewed beer, but there’s something Cassie must do besides survive: tell Adrian she still loves him. And to do that, Cassie has to find faith that she’s stronger than she thinks, she’s still a crack shot and true love never dies.

The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind by Jackson Ford @orbitbooks @Netgalley #NewRelease #JacksonFord

Hello Book Friends,

I’m excited to bring you a new super fun book that is going to hit the shelves in a couple of weeks.

Why did you pick it up Vicci? –  Ummm have you seen that title???

IntGdBN4_400x400

My Thoughts

This was such a fun read, it follows the main character Teagan, who has Psychokinesis or PK for short, so she can indeed move shit with her mind.

Tegan works for the Government, who send her on secret missions, simply because she is able to do things that other people can’t.

But all in all Tegan is a young girl, she thinks her abilities are cool, but that’s really about it, she wants to be able to drink beer and have a good time, she really isn’t that bothered about working for the Government, but she does know what will happen to her if anyone ever found out what she can do, so she does the bare minimum, much to her teams frustration.

Tegan’s real passion, is food, and not any old food, she really wants to own a restaurant, and her dream is to eat in every swanky place she can to get ideas for this, but this is just a pipe-dream.

The last job that she took on with her team didn’t go according to plan, and now a body has turned up, but he could only have been killed with powers the same as Tegan’s, she is adamant that she didn’t do it, but her team-mates are not so sure, so she is given 24 hours to prove her innocence before she is reported.

A really fun read, I loved Tegan, she was funny and sometimes really really stupid, but i think that made her more likeable.

A crazy ride that drops you right in the centre of it on the first page, you will never get bored with this story, some great characters and a bit of a cliffhanger that makes you think that book 2 will probably be coming your way soon!

**Many thanks to Orion Books and Netgalley for my copy of this book**

About the Book

For Teagan Frost, sh* just got real.

Teagan Frost is having a hard time keeping it together. Sure, she’s got telekinetic powers — a skill that the government is all too happy to make use of, sending her on secret break-in missions that no ordinary human could carry out. But all she really wants to do is kick back, have a beer, and pretend she’s normal for once.

But then a body turns up at the site of her last job — murdered in a way that only someone like Teagan could have pulled off. She’s got 24 hours to clear her name – and it’s not just her life at stake. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green @hankgreen @orionbooks @audibleuk #AudiobookReview #YoungAdult

Hello book-lovers,

I’m so happy to be sharing my review for this wonderful, absolutely remarkable read!

Oh how I loved this book!

Why did you pick it up Vicci??

I’d seen it here and there all over BookTube and people seemed to be loving it, so I thought “what the Hell” and watched my new credit fly away….sob!

My Thoughts

How many times have you thought to yourself I wish I was famous? How many times have you thought that all of your troubles would go away if you were?

How about being famous by accident?

This story is being told by our main MC 23 year old April May, who while wandering through NYC one night spies something that she doesn’t remember seeing there before.
Being super quirky and arty, she does the only thing she can think of at this time in the morning, and excitedly calls her best friend Andy.

Andy isn’t too happy about being woken up at 3am, but of course he goes along to see what April May is so excited about, and when he gets there, so is he.

A huge statue has appeared in the middle of New York, and no-one seems to be paying it much attention, April May is astounded about how much work has gone into this statue, and there is no artist name attached to it to give any credit.

Andy has his own YouTube channel where he uploads random videos, the natural response is for them to make a silly video of this, so April “interviews” the statue, names him Carl, and Andy later uploads the video.

The next morning, it seems that the video has gone viral, and April May is hot-stuff due to there not being just one Carl, oh no, that one is just New York Carl, there are also Carl’s in cities all over the world, and it also seems that they all appeared at the same time, and Carl seems to be the name of choice, i.e Beijing Carl, Buenos Aires Carl, Tokyo Carl etc.

But April and Andy are the original Carl discoverers, and fame is instant for them.

April has to deal with fame with the whole world watching, and I really do mean the whole wide world!

Narrated by Kristen Sieh with a cameo by the author, who both did a fantastic job, I will definitely be looking out for book 2 and more by Kristen.

Until I was about 2 or 3 hours into this book I had no idea that Hank is the brother of the super duper famous John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars!

Comparing both authors is inevitable, but Hank held his own, and dare I say it, even manages for me to slightly outshine his brother **ducks the flying objects**

About the book

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing
By: Hank Green
Narrated by: Hank GreenKristen Sieh
Length: 9 hrs and 25 mins
Release date: 25-09-18
Publisher: Orion Publishing Group

The Carls just appeared. Coming home from work at three a.m., 23-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship – like a 10-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor – April and her friend Andy make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day April wakes up to a viral video and a new life.

News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world – everywhere from Beijing to Buenos Aires – and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the centre of an intense international media spotlight. Now April has to deal with the pressure on her relationships, her identity, and her safety that this new position brings, all while being on the front lines of the quest to find out not just what the Carls are but what they want from us.

Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social Internet is changing fame, rhetoric and radicalisation; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring from the same dehumanisation that follows a life in the public eye.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman @NealShusterman @audibleuk #AudiobookReview #YoungAdult #SciFi

Hello literary lovers!

I’m super pleased to bring you a review for this fantastic YA book, from the master himself.

Why did you pick it up Vicci? –  Neal Shusterman always seems to write the best books, it always has a little ‘what if’ in there, and he always makes you sit back and think, could this really happen?

My Thoughts

Another brilliant read by Mr Shusterman, who is becoming one of my favourite YA authors, his stories are always new, unique and interesting.

Set place in the future, us humans have managed to eradicate disease, ageing and even suicide, they have even put a stopper in death itself!

Obviously if you cannot die then the world would become over populated, this is where the Scythes come in.

Scythes are death, they are trained in the art of death, you don’t know when it will be, but one day while you are sitting around the table having your evening meal with your family, or on the way to work on the bus, or driving your car, you will be met, and killed by a Scythe!

But who chooses who is going to die?, well the world is now being run by an AI called The Thunderhead, the Scythes are instructed and they will find you to “Gleen” you, the only way that you can actually die, or they can randomly choose someone, after all they do have targets to meet!

Because of this the Scythes are treated as celebrities, they will never have to wait in line, or pay for their meals, they are waited on hand and foot, presumably to try and get a pardon from them.

After finding a couple of teenagers that Scythe Faraday deem to be suitable for apprenticeships, Rowan and Citre have big decisions to make, do they take the job, do they want to be killers? If they do then they can get immunity for their family, but it is a big gamble to take, because only one of them can be a Scythe, so what happens to the loser?

I loved the world building in this story, and Shusterman always plants the ‘What if’ seed into all of his stories, they make great BookClub reads.

🎧🎧 – Brilliantly narrated by Greg Tremblay, I can’t wait to read the next book in the series

Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.
