Not My Daughter by Suzy K. Quinn @SuzyKQuinn @HQstories @NetGalley #bookreview

Hello Book Friends,

I hope you are all doing well?

I am so happy to be one of the first on this blog tour for this fabulous page turner of a book.

My Review

Wow this one got me flipping pages so fast!!

Lorna had a bucket list when she was 16, she’d made this because she had been diagnosed with a terminal cancer which she managed to beat, so she was living her life to the fullest.

As is a lot of young teenage girls dreams, one of the items on her bucket list, was to meet & marry a rock star, not just any rock star though, it had to be Michael Reyji Ray!

So to be able to go to one of his concerts and to actually meet him, and to actually have him *choose* her and fall in love with her, well it was like a dream come true, except, it really wasn’t.

Fast forward 16 years and Lorna is a scared mother of Liberty, she doesn’t allow her to go out at night, or go out with friends, and she is fiercely protective over her, to the utter disgust of her daughter, who thinks she is just an ridiculously over protective mother.

But Lorna has high fences and security, and is over protective for a reason, a reason Liberty is not aware of, and thank goodness Liberty doesn’t know who her father is, otherwise everything she knows could change.

Except Liberty does find out, and she wants to meet her famous father and find out what he is really like, as her crazy mother has only told her bad things about what a monster he is, and she wants to find out for herself!

Told from the POV of Lorna and Liberty and with a sprinkling of the past from Lorna’s POV, Suzy K Quinn takes you on a heart stopping journey.

**Please be warned that this book deals with Domestic Abuse and has instances of sexual abuse, a LOT of Gaslighting and Manipulation.

It was very interesting to see how differently Michael acted in front of his friends and family, and then with Lorna and some others, the Red Flags were definitely waving, but unfortunately it is not always possible to see them while you think you are in love!

**Thank you to HQStories for asking me to be on this blogtour**

Enjoy

The Wives by Tarryn Fisher @DarkMarkTarryn @HQstories #TheWives #BookReview

Hello book friends,

I hope your week has been lovely and bookish 😃

I am so happy to be able to bring you my review for this book.

If you know anything about me by now, then you will know that I am a HUGE fan of this lady, so much so, I pre-ordered this audiobook before it came out, I also requested the Netgalley copy, and then I was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the Audio book blog tour, I was so happy I danced a little jig in my kitchen LOL

The Wives jacket

Welcome to the world of Tarryn Fisher, pull up a chair, pack enough WTF in your suitcase to last you the journey, you’ll need it!!

It’s difficult to delve too much into this story without giving away spoilers, even though I want to shout OMG JUST WAIT TILL YOU GET TO THIS BIT!

Meet Thursday,

Thursday is happily married to Seth, he is a hard working businessman, and travels all over the country, so she really only gets to see him once a week, ironically on Thursday as he works away from home.

Except Seth isn’t staying in hotels when he is working away, oh no, he is visiting and staying with each of his wives! Yep you heard right, he also has Monday and Tuesday to visit on his little trips too.

You see, Seth (and his wives) are polygamists, he is married to 3 women at once, and Thursday tries her best to be happy with this situation, she makes sure that she is the ‘Best Wife’ by being that lovely old quote by Jerry Hall “You must be a maid in the living room, a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom.” 😲

And although she likes to be Seth’s confident, he doesn’t tell her much, if anything about the other Wives, not even their names or where they live, so it’s not surprising that one day Thursday, by complete accident finds a slip of paper in one of Seth’s suit jackets, a Doctor’s prescription, with another woman’s name on it, what’s a curious girl to do but to pull out that laptop and start Googling!

Who is she, could it be one of the other Wives?

What transpires is something that will have your head spinning, and your mind asking whether or not you want to “have a little lie down” Be prepared to want to talk about this book with EVERYONE!!

Tarryn Fisher has such a wonderful way of writing flawed characters, she isn’t scared of showing someone in a bad light, and she always makes you think twice and put yourself in the shoes of the MC and think “I’d probably do that too”
If you haven’t read anything by Tarryn before then I would highly suggest that you pick this one up and start your love of her from there 😊
Narration by Lauren Fortgang was just brilliant, I was never wondering who was who, and she brought Thursday completely to life!

This one is well worth a credit.

*Thank you to the lovely Izzy at HQ Stories for picking me to be on this Blog Tour and sending me an audio copy of this book**

My Thoughts

🅲🆁🅴🅴🅿🆈–🅳🆁🅴🅰🅼🆂–🆁–🆄🆂

Well I’m making sure I definitely lock every door after reading this one, and windows, and taping down my letterbox 😮

A great creepy little thriller that will have you hiding under your duvet.

**We are looking for that special someone to apartment-sit for approx. 12 weeks.
You will get $12000 for this …….Yes you did read that right $12000!!

For this job you will be required to apartment sit, in a luxury set of apartments in the famous Bartholomew building, situated overlooking Central Park.

There are a specific set of rules that must be abided by, however, don’t let that dissuade of this fantastic opportunity**

Jules sees that advert, and all her dreams come true in an instant, she is currently living on her best friend’s couch, as she lost her job and her boyfriend all in one day.

Everything seems to be against her, and she is unable to get herself sorted without any money behind her, until she sees the advert.

After blagging her way through the interview, she is offered the position, she is ecstatic about this, unlike her friend, who can’t help feeling that if something is too good to be true….it probably is!

Rules for the duration of her stay are a bit….well, weird, but if you are going to be paid 12 grand after 12 weeks, well you’d be prepared to follow some weird rules too, right?

After settling in and looking around, Jules meets another apartment sitter called Ingrid, and they soon become BFF’s, for a while…until she goes missing!

I loved this book, it has very creepy vibes about it, and reminded me a little of Rosemary’s Baby, The Bartholomew is based on The Dakota Apartments in NYC, complete with gargoyles and old-fashioned elevators with cages.

I mean, the building just screams creepy right? Add some gargoyles to the bedroom windows, and it’s Creepy-Dreams-R-Us 🤪

Perfectly narrated by Stephanie Cannon, who was just brilliant, this one is definitely on to add to your TBR

The Secret Mother by Shalini Boland @ShaliniBoland @bookouture#AudioBookReview #TheSecretMother

Hello book friends,

I’m super happy to bring you a review for this fab read, that quite frankly scared the pants off of me, the thought of a stranger just  being in your house when you arrive home makes me a bit 😲

Why Did You Pick It Up Vicci?

Well for one, if you’ve never read a book by Shalini Boland before then you are really missing out on some great reads, and also have you read the blurb to this book??!!

40996217._SY475_

My Thoughts

So I don’t mind telling you that this one terrified me, and I don’t really know why!

I think it is something to do with the fact that Tessa Markham comes home from work one day, let’s herself in and makes her way into the kitchen, only to find a small child in there, who turns around and says “Are you my Mummy?”

Now I’m sure if I was in that situation in real life, I wouldn’t have said ARGHHHHH!!! (or something vaguely similar) but I did, those words just took me back to early 2000’s and that horrid Doctor Who episode called The Empty Child, and he wasn’t cute….he wasn’t cute at all!!

tenor

Anyhoo I digress.

Tessa finds the said (non evil) child in her kitchen and panics, what does she do? Who does she tell? and where the hell did he come from?

After calling the police and getting the side eye from them, she suddenly gets labelled as a child abductor, and people that know her, start looking at her in a different light.

Did she steal that child?, Is she what people are calling her?, or is there something sinister going on?

She doesn’t remember taking him, but her mind has been a little distracted after her recent tragedy, so who knows.

The press hound her, and her ex boyfriend isn’t helping much either.

Be prepared to whizz your way through this one, it’s a cracker!

🎧🎧

I listened to the Audiobook narrated by Katie Villa who did a brilliant job , I will certainly be looking out for other titles that she has narrated.

The Night Visitors by Carol Goodman @C_Goodmania @WmMorrowBooks #bookreview #thenightvisitors

Happy Tuesday all!

Excited to share with you today my review for this intense thriller! I am featuring this book on Instagram today if you want to check it out follow my link below! But you can read my review right here right now!🙌🏻

My Thoughts

An Erie and atmospheric thriller.Brimming with tension and peppered with the supernatural!

Carol Goodman has crafted a creepy and addictive tale that will keep you up far past your bedtime. Unique and clever, this is a story you don’t just read you experience. Miss Goodmans descriptive writing will have you shuttering and covered in goosebumps. The feeling of impending doom and the cold of the snow seep through the pages of this book.

There is an element of the Supernatural in this book that added the perfect amount of tension to the story.

Alice and Oren arrive in a small town in the Catskills by bus in the middle of the night. Mattie A complete stranger is waiting for them at the bus station. She works for an agency that finds placement for women and children fleaing domestic abuse. Mattie is immediately drawn to Oren, for that reason and the impending blizzard she takes them home with her rather than to the shelter. Mattie still lives in her family home, a once beautiful old Victorian now in need of much repair. The house was as much a character in the story as Mattie, Alice, and Oren. Each of these characters is hiding something and the truth might possibly put their lives in danger. Who can be trusted? And what will happen when the secrets are revealed?

A creepy house, a brutal snowstorm, intriguing characters, and dark secrets all make for a compelling story. I really liked both Alice and Mattie, But I was also suspicious of both of them throughout the book. Oren was an adorable kid and I loved his passion for Star Wars. I really wanted everything to work out for all these characters, I just wasn’t quite sure what that was? I loved how the layers of this story were peeled away and the truth was eventually laid bare. Towards the end of this book I was seriously on the edge of my seat, the tension was palpable, and the results startling.

A cunning tale that was simultaneously creepy and heartwarming. A unique thriller packed with twists and turns and a shocking end!

*** many thanks to William morrow for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

The latest thriller from the internationally best-selling author of The Lake of Dead Languages and The Other Mother, a story of mistaken identities and missed chances, forgiveness, and vengeance.
“Carol Goodman is, simply put, a stellar writer.” (Lisa Unger, New York Times best-selling author of The Red Hunter)
Alice gets off a bus in the middle of a snowstorm in Delphi, NY. She is fleeing an abusive relationship and desperate to protect Oren, 10 years old, a major Star Wars fan and wise beyond his years. Though Alice is wary, Oren bonds nearly instantly with Mattie, a social worker in her 50s who lives in an enormous, rundown house in the middle of the woods.
Mattie lives alone and is always available, and so she is the person the hotline always calls when they need a late-night pickup. And although according to protocol, Mattie should take Alice and Oren to a local shelter, instead, she brings them home for the night. She has plenty of room, she says. What she doesn’t say is that Oren reminds her of her little brother, who died 30 years ago at the age of 10.
But Mattie isn’t the only one withholding elements of the truth. Alice is keeping her own secrets. And as the snowstorm worsens around them, each woman’s past will prove itself unburied, stirring up threats both within and without.

Desperate Paths by E. C. Diskin @ecdiskin #bookreview #desperatepaths #pubday

Happy Tuesday book lovers and Happy Publication Day to this wonderful book!

Excited to share with you my review for this book that really caught me by surprise! It was an excellent thriller packed with amazing well developed characters! I just loved this one!

My Thoughts

A compelling domestic thriller brimming with secrets and lies!

E. C. Diskin has crafted a tale packed with complicated relationships and complex characters. This was a slow burning story about a dysfunctional family with many secrets and even more to lose. How would you feel if the life you knew turned out to be a complete lie?

Brooklyn Anderson, returns home to small town Eden Illinois, after receiving a phone call from her sister that their father was in the hospital. Brooklyn has been in New York pursuing her career as an actress. The trip home seems all too familiar, she was just home a few months ago after the death of her mother, and now her father has been hospitalized. Her father took a fall and broke his hip, and thank goodness her sister Ginny showed up at the house in time to take him to the hospital. The thing is, Ginny‘s stories aren’t adding up and Brooklyn has a lot of questions to ask the sister she has never really gotten along with. The more Brooklyn digs into the past the more questions she has, how could her loving family have so much to hide? Another Eden Citizen has returned home who has written a movie script and is ready to lay all the town’s secrets bare. Just like a row of dominoes after one secret is revealed the rest of them slowly and sometimes painfully are revealed as well.

Brooklyn was such a likable character there was something about her that really drew me in. I was right there by her side throughout this book squeezing her hand every time she learns something she didn’t already know. The storytelling in this book was exceptional and the characters were tremendously well drawn. This was not A crazy twisted edge of your seat type book. It was a well told story about a family and a town’s secrets and how they impacted the lives of so many. It was about a secret leads to a lie leads to another secret leads to another lie, it is a snowball effect with no end. And ultimately it will consume and destroy you. This is one of those books that captivated me from first page to last! Recommend!

*** many thanks to E. C. Diskin for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

Publisher’s Summary

She knew everything about her family and her town. Except its secrets.
Brooklyn Anderson knows it looks bad. She was found wiping down a gun. His blood on her hands. Her father now dead. The incomprehensible nightmare has started.
Seven days earlier, Brooklyn had returned to Eden to care for her beloved father, who lay helpless in a hospital bed. Her estranged sister, Ginny, said he fell. But as Brooklyn soon realizes, Ginny is prone to lying.
Former Eden resident Darius Woods was in the hospital, too. The famous actor had written a screenplay that would lay bare all the secrets of the town, but within hours of his return, someone shot him.
As the Woods investigation proceeds, and Brooklyn starts to question everything she believes about her family, her neighbors, and her home, secrets and lies begin to unravel. But nothing can prepare her for where those lies will finally lead.
And sharing the truth of what happened the night her father died might just make things worse.

The Perfect Liar by Thomas Christopher Green @StMartinsPress #bookreview #theperfectliar

Happy Sunday book lovers!

Another review for a compelling story about spouses with secrets!💜

My Thoughts

I Know WHO You Are!

Oh what a tangled web we weave… Imagine you find a note taped to your front door and all it says is: I know who you are! Would you assume they had the wrong house? Assume it was for your spouse? Your child? Or would you know you have something to hide and it was meant for you? This is the note that Susanna and Max found taped to their front door one morning, the note that changed everything, the note that they both thought was intended for them. Two people with many secrets to hide, but only one note, who was it meant for? And who knows the truth? Who truly is the “PERFECT LIAR“?

this was one dark compelling story about two pretty disturbed dishonest people. A marriage that appears like a fairytale on the outside, but is riddled with so much deceit on the inside. Two seemingly well adjusted attractive people with so much to hide. So much to lose. Told from the alternating perspectives of both Susanna and Max this book definitely kept me on my toes.

An engaging and entertaining read, but you will need to suspend your belief a little. There is a stolen identity in this book (don’t worry this is not a spoiler) and a simple Google search could probably clear a lot of things up, but the search was never made, well at least not by the right people. Things like this don’t generally bother me, but it did make me think hmm… so if you are one of those people that needs everything to be realistic, you are forewarned for this one! Despite this the book is highly addictive with some very well drawn despicable characters. So many secrets, so many lies, you never are quite sure whose side to be on, if any. Recommend!

🎵🎵🎵Song Running Through My Head

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you’ll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won’t tell what I said
‘Cause two can keep a secret
If one of them is dead?
Why do you smile
Like you have told a secret
Now you’re telling lies
‘Cause you’re the one to keep it
But no one keeps a secret
No one keeps a secret
Why when we do our darkest deeds
Do we tell?
They burn in our brains
Become a living hell
‘Cause everyone tells
Everyone tells?

About the Book

A seemingly perfect marriage is threatened by the deadly secrets husband and wife keep from each other, for fans of B.A. Paris and Paula Hawkins.

Susannah, a young widow and single mother, has remarried well: to Max, a charismatic artist and popular speaker whose career took her and her fifteen-year-old son out of New York City and to a quiet Vermont university town. Strong-willed and attractive, Susannah expects that her life is perfectly in place again. Then one quiet morning she finds a note on her door: I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Max dismisses the note as a prank. But days after a neighborhood couple comes to dinner, the husband mysteriously dies in a tragic accident while on a run with Max. Soon thereafter, a second note appears on their door: DID YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?

Both Susannah and Max are keeping secrets from the world and from each other —secrets that could destroy their family and everything they have built. The Perfect Liar is a thrilling novel told through the alternating perspectives of Susannah and Max with a shocking climax that no one will expect, from the bestselling author of The Headmaster’s Wife.

Verity by Colleen Hoover @colleenhoover #bestof2018 #Dark #Romance #Thriller #Mystery #BookReview #aktbmbookblog

4.5 Crazy WTF Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐·5

Another late addition to my best of 2018 reads.

Well, Colleen Hoover released another book

If you don’t already know it by now CoHo is the queen of romance, her books (if you haven’t read them) always have a romance element to them, even if the story line deals with some heavy (and important) topics, and is one of my absolutely favourite authors.

But then she decides to just move away from the genre that everyone knows and loves, and self publish a psychological thriller, I mean WHO DOES THAT??

COLLEEN FREAKING HOOVER THAT’S WHO!!

This book shouldn’t work, looking at her back catalogue, you would expect to find Love, Despair and happiness, all wrapped with a kind of awkwardly placed bow.

But this book WORKS PEOPLE!!!

I’m not sure whether she popped to Tarryn Fisher’s house and they somehow managed to have some weird Seance-Ouija board party, where their minds were mixed together, but CoHo went to the dark side people!!

I was really worried about reading this book, I love a Psychological Thriller, and have read some great…and not so great ones, so for CoHo to even attempt to do this deserves a high five.

The Blurb

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

verity

My Thoughts

4.5 Crazy WTF Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐·5

Verity follows the story of Lowen Ashleigh, an author who is hired by Jeremy Crawford, to complete the remaining books in a hugely successful series by his wife, the bestselling author Verity Crawford, who, after an accident, is unable to finish them on time.

Although Lowen is struggling financially, she doesn’t feel like she should be the one taking on this monumental task, however when the dollar signs are waved in front of her face, the idea of being able to pay off her debts is too large, and she takes the job.

She is advised to stay at Verity’s house for a few days to sort through the outlines and notes for the new books, considering she has never read any of the books by the author, it is a huge task to take on.

Finding years worth of notes and boxes of files in Verity’s office, Lowen realises what a massive task this will be…..and then she finds the autobiography!

“What you read will taste so bad at times, you’ll want to spit it out, but you’ll swallow these words and they will become part of you, part of your gut, and you will hurt because of them.”

And that my friends is all I am going to tell you about this book, yes you could have gotten all of this from the blurb, but this is one that you need to go in blind!

I haven’t read a book that had me hating every character for a long time, I mean I LOVED them, but Gahh do they have any redeeming qualities…Nope!

You know when you are watching a thriller / horror film, and you start shouting at the TV? The music is taking a turn, and you know something is about to happen, and the BAM, your popcorn goes flying, and your heart starts racing?

THIS is the book that did that to me!

Prepare yourself for a dark, brilliant read.

Happy Thursday bibliophiles! Is anyone else confused as to what day it is? I’m so thrown off by the holidays, not sure what I’m going to do next Monday!

Excited to share with you today my review for this dark twisted story that will keep you in the mind of a psychopath throughout, and I can hardly think of a better way to spend my time!😉😇😏

Hunting Annabelle by Wendy Heard

My Thoughts

This book will make your mind spin and your palms sweat, an edge of your seat ride into crazy town!
Oh how I love to spend time in the mind of a psychopath! Although in the case of Sean you were never quite sure if he was a psychopath or a victim? This really was what set this book a bit apart, the not knowing if you were sympathetic towards the bad guy or the good guy… but good or bad Sean was definitely an odd duck…

Sean has recently been released from a psychiatric hospital, for reasons you’re not completely sure of until later in the book… his mother and he have relocated from San Francisco to Texas, The assumption is that Sean has brought shame on the family…. Shawn’s mother is a controlling, judgemental, condescending, neurosurgeon…. so I’m guessing there weren’t a ton of hugs and kisses and complements in Sean’s past… Shawn is an artist who spends his days drawing at a local amusement park, that is where he meets Annabelle… Shawn is immediately entranced by Annabel, and Annabelle seems to be charmed by quirky Sean… while on their first date somebody kidnaps Annabelle, and Sean is determined to find her… so who took Annabel? And why? And does Sean have something to do with this?Oh the mind f***!

Sean was both off putting an endearing, someone you wanted to give a hug and run away from…. I really had no idea if he was good or bad, or innocent or guilty, until the bitter end… Annabel was complicated, I really never could get a complete handle on her character…. two characters I didn’t necessarily like, but they were so well developed flaws and all! The book completely sucks you in from the beginning, this lonely eccentric character with an artist hand, what is really going on inside him? The pace slows down a bit in the middle with the search for Annabel, although I felt every piece of this puzzle was necessary…. then that ending! Wow that was explosive an unexpected and has you thinking to yourself what the actual f*** did I just read?

A dark and twisty creepy story that will keep you on your toes throughout, absolutely recommend!

About the Book

Sean Suh is done with killing. After serving three years in a psychiatric prison, he’s determined to stay away from temptation. But he can’t resist Annabelle–beautiful, confident, incandescent Annabelle–who alone can see past the monster to the man inside. The man he’s desperately trying to be.

Then Annabelle disappears.

Sean is sure she’s been kidnapped—he witnessed her being taken first hand—but the police are convinced that Sean himself is at the centre of this crime. And he must admit, his illness has caused him to “lose time” before. What if there’s more to what happened than he’s able to remember?

Though haunted by the fear that it might be better for Annabelle if he never finds her, Sean can’t bring himself to let go of her without a fight. To save her, he’ll have to do more than confront his own demons… He’ll have to let them loose.

Super excited today to share with you my review for this thrilling thriller that is being re-published today by the fabulous Bookouture👯‍♀️

The Best Friend by Shalini Boland

My Thoughts

Well now… This was one crazy twisty story that kept me on the edge throughout!

with friends like this, who needs enemies?

This was a fast paced intense story that I finished in a matter of hours… and it’s a good thing I did, because I think I was holding my breath throughout this entire book! Shalini Boland you never fail to amaze me! and if I’m being honest frighten me a bit as well, I can only imagine what goes on in that brain of yours!

Luisa has a lovely life, a loving husband, an adorable son, an enjoyable writing gig… when her son Joe starts at a new posh school Louisa is desperate for her and Joe to fit in… so when Darcy befriends her, and her son Tyler quickly becomes friends with Joe, Louisa is absolutely thrilled… things seem to be going swimmingly, but things were just a little too good to be true…. slowly and subtly Louisa begins to notice things and Darcy’s facade slowly begins to peel away… but is Louisa seeing things where there is nothing to see? Is she getting paranoid? No one seems to believe her not her husband, not her sister, so is this real or is it all in Louisa’s mind?

Just like Louisa I was so tense and so frustrated during this book… how frustrating would it be for people not to believe what you believe to be true? I had so much sympathy for Luisa, I really wanted to reach through the pages and shake some sense into her husband Jared! But I must admit Darcy was one clever girl! She almost had me fooled! I just could not figure out for the life of me what someone who seemingly had it all like Darcy had against sweet Louisa?

absolutely recommend this tents and twisted story you will never look at your best friend the same way again!

*** many thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***
