Perfect Remains by Helen Fields @Helen_Fields @AvonBooksUK #PerfectRemains #HelenFields #BookReview

Hello book friends,

I’m so happy to have been invited to take part in the audio blog tour for this cracking thriller!

TheDilemma_BTB

My Thoughts

Set in the UK in Edinburgh, Detective Inspector Luc Callanach who was a former Interpol Officer, has joined the Crime team in Scotland, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, and also a bag full of rumours that still follow him, and his methods around.

Ava is his work colleague, and they actually make a great pair, they seems to balance themselves out, while Ava is fun loving and knowledge based, Callanach comes across as a grumpy old man with a stick up his ass!

We also get the POV of the murderer, and we are privy to the information in his mind, we can what he is doing, to whom, and who will be next, and let me tell you, It. Is. Dark!!

The gruesome parts are very descriptive, I for one loved them, but be prepared to wince a lot while reading them.

This was a very clever thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you turning the pages (or in my case listening to the audiobook) I stayed up way too late trying to piece things together and work out what was going on.

๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง

Narration was by Robin Laing, a brand new to me narrator.

I thought that he did a great job with the narrating, it must be so difficult to switch back and forth from a French accent to Scottish, and Laing seemed to be able to do it seamlessly.

**Thank you to Sanjana Cunniah at Avon Books UK for my audio copy of this book**

Enjoy

The Passengers by John Marrs @johnmarrs1 @DelReyUK #AudioBookreview #ThePassengers

Hello bookie buddies!!

I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday, when I woke up and realised it was only (insert any day here except Friday ๐Ÿ˜‚) I was bitterly disappointed! – This is me Every. Single. Day

So in true grumpy style I decided to start another audio book, and this was the one I picked up.

Why Did You Pick It Up Vicci?

This will be the 4th book of John Marrs that I have read, and it certainly won’t be the last.

I love the way that he builds the story, and that you get really invested in the characters lives. And I’m super excited about his book “The One” that is soon to be a major Netflix series.

Set in a not-too-distant-future, Britain is now seeing self-drive cars on our roads every day, they are the saviour of our highways, as they help the environment, as well as cutting down traffic jams, they can see possible problems ahead, so will take alternative routes.

You can just get in the car, and relax, maybe sit and read the daily paper, maybe finish putting on your make-up, or because the windows turn opaque and let you play videos, you can sit and scroll through Facebook and Twitter on the way to work…Sounds great right?

And it is, everyone has embraced the future, except some, some people really don’t like these cars at all!

Libby is one of these people, she is called for jury duty, but not for what you think, these juries consist of just one member of the public, and they are held in secret to discuss accidents involving Driverless cars, and also to determine who (or what) is at fault.

Headed by the obnoxious MP Jack, the trial is in full swing when the hacker joins the conversation, and he makes it clear very quickly who is in charge!

You see, it turns out that the cars that “could never be hacked” actually could be, and the hacker will show you what happens when you do not pay attention.

A live feed has been set up on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram showing the courtroom and all of the Jurors, it also shows the random 8 people that are now stuck in their cars and are all driving to the same location, the exact location, meaning that they will all crash…but the hacker will allow one person to live, who decides that….Oh…it’s you!!

A wonderful read with a scary look into our near future.

Mr Marrs, I think Ron Weasley said it best:

Dead in Venice by Fiona Leitch @fkleitch @audibleuk #DerynEdwards #Mystery #Thriller #AudiobookReview

Hello again book buddies!!

I’m super happy to share my review of this little surprise that I didn’t even have on my radar.

Why did you pick this one up Vicci?

Well, funny story, I didn’t even know this book existed, I was chatting to a lovely lady on TBC (THE Book Club) on Facebook and someone was asking for Audio recommendations, I jumped in to give some of my favourites, and ended up in a messenger chat with her.
I sent her an audio with the Audible ‘Send this Book’ option, and luckily she loved it (Phew) and to say thank you, she gifted me a code for her book, I had no idea she was an author either, Anyhoo, I downloaded it, listened to it, and Loved it!!

41813137

My Thoughts

Bella Tyson is a famous author, her genre is crime and she loves to write a good old Murder Mystery, but there is one thing holding her back at the moment, and that is writers block, after a messy and bitter divorce a couple of years ago, she just can’t seem to get back into the swing of it.

She receives an email from a fan who offers her an apartment in Venice to help her with new ideas for her new novel.
Bella obviously jumps at the chance, and soon starts thinking of ideas for her new book.

After arriving in Venice and meeting the very dashing Will, the two set off to see the sights of Venice, well until the murders start happening obviously!

This is brilliant for Bella as she can use these brutal murders for inspiration for her book, but then weird things keep happening that she can’t explain!

A super fun read, I loved Bella’s character, she used humour a lot to get herself out of situations, and I love her for that as I tend to do the same thing, although not as brilliantly as her!

Expertly narrated by Deryn Edwards, who bought Bella’s character to life and showed her sparkling personality.

A short listen at only 6 hours, and well worth grabbing!

**Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this book**

AUDIBLE CRIME WRITING GRANT FINALIST – AUDIBLE EXCLUSIVE

Bella Tyson is a famous 40-something crime writer suffering from writerโ€™s block ever since a bitter divorce two years before. When a fan offers her the use of an apartment in Venice, Bella jumps at it, hoping a change of scene will have her writing again. Once there, she soon meets Will, a charming Englishman, who shows her around the city.

Enchanted by both Will and her new surroundings, Bella decides to write a supernatural murder mystery and begins researching local legends and the cityโ€™s more sinister side, including an illicit visit to the island of Poveglia, spooky former home of Veniceโ€™s asylum. Soon Bella uncovers more than she has bargained for and finds herself enmeshed in a series of gruesome real-life murders that uncannily mirror the legends she is researching.

As she and Will join forces to investigate, real life and local lore merge disconcertingly – for nothing in Venice turns out to be what seems, including Will….

Her Last Move by John Marrs @johnmarrs1 #BrillianceAudio #Thriller #Crime #AudiobookReview

Hello friends,

It’s Bank Holiday here over in the UK so we get an extra long weekend YAY!

I’m super happy to bring you a review for this twisty little tale!

Why did you pick it up Vicci? – Well I have read a few of this authors books before and reviewed them on here, I have also picked up his latest book but it is on Pre-order from Audible so I have to wait .. boo! So I thought I’d dive in with this one first.

IntGdBN4_400x400

My Thoughts

I loved this thriller, it is full of twists and turns and a finale that I didn’t see coming, everything I love about a thriller.

We hear the story from multiple POV, one from DS Becca Vincent, and her partner, a ‘Super Recogniser’ Joe, and then from the serial killer themselves.

The opening scene sets the rest of the book up, we start with a packed tube station and a murder, DS Becca Vincent is there on her way to work, but she is quite far back and has her headphones in, so she doesn’t realise there is a problem until the police show up.

She is having struggles in her home life, she has a daughter with special needs and her mother has moved in with her to help, she is finding it difficult to juggle her home life with her career, and now it is going to get twice as tricky.

Joe is a ‘super recogniser’ (I had to google it myself, and it is an actual thing) He can look at a face and store it in his memory, and then pull it out maybe years later with a name.

From Wiki – The skill is recognised and employed among the British intelligence community.

In May 2015, the London Metropolitan Police officially formed a team made up of people with this heightened capability for recognising people and put them to work identifying individuals whose faces are captured on CCTV. Scotland Yard has a squad of over 200 super recognisers.

Who knew?? Well Becca didn’t for one, but Joe is the man that she is partnered with to try and catch this serial killer, who seems to have some sort of pattern, if only they could work out what it is!

Some grizzly murders and some great twists in this one, and a big WTF which I always enjoy.

John Marrs has written some great thrillers, and although this is not my absolute favourite of his, it is still a fantastic read.

๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง – Narrated by Elizabeth Knowelden who gave a fantastic performance, I will certainly be looking out for more books narrated by her.

Degrees of Guilt by HS Chandler @HSCinkpen @orion_crime @orionbooks @TrapezeBooks #BookReview #ComingSoon #DegreesOfGuilt

Well what a ride this book was, I sat and read the whole thing in one afternoon, I was gripped from beginning to end!

Why did you pick it up Vicci? – I saw the book available on Netgalley and loved the sound of the Synopsis, so I clicked request, and crossed my fingers.

40103980

This fabulous little courtroom thriller jumps straight into the action with Maria Bloxham standing over her Husband’s dead body, murder weapon in hand, after calmly washing her tea-cup she dials 999 and tells them she has just killed her husband.

She waits for them to arrive, and gets into the back of the police car after they arrest her.

We are then shot forward to her court case and the 12 people that are going to decide her fate.

We meet each one of jury, but the story focuses only on a few of them. one of them being Lottie.

Lottie is married, and a mother to a young child, she loves her husband, but the relationship has started to go a little stale, and she is feeling a little unappreciated, he doesn’t look at her like the young sexy Cameron does when she is sitting next to him in the courtroom……..and while the cat’s away!!

I loved the characters, especially the Tabithas, and how the “pack mentality”

I loved the way that the author describes just how bloody boring it is being on jury service, I remember doing it years ago, and I think I spent more time reading my book in the special room than I did actually sitting on the jury!

All in all I really enjoyed this book and i would definitely add it to your TBR if you like a twisty courtroom drama.

**Many thanks to The author, Trapeze Books, and Netgalley for my copy of the book**

The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver (Lincoln Rhyme, #1) #Mystery #Thriller #Crime #AudiobookReview

Hello book friends,

A little Oldie-but-goldie review today, I keep meaning to read the rest of the series but keep getting distracted but other pretty books Lol

Why did you pick it  up Vicci? – Well it was an Audible Daily Deal so I thought ‘Why not!’ I’d already seen the movie about a hundred times so I was interested in how the book measured against it.

IntGdBN4_400x400

My Thoughts

WOAH this is sooo much better than the movie, and I loved the movie (I must have seen it 20 times)

Lincoln Rhyme is a forensic criminalist who is good as his job, brilliant in fact and was often called to help with crime scenes as he is the best…… was the best.

After a terrible accident Lincoln has ended up lying in a hospital bed and paralysed, now as a quadriplegic Lincoln can only dream of his old job, until he gets a visit from an old friend.

There has been a murder, a gruesome one at that, and the murderer has left clues to another one that is going to happen, the clues were found by Amelia Sachs, a street cop who is then paired with Rhymes to help solves these grizzly crimes.

Lincoln and Sachs are a good pairing, him in his bed talking Amelia through what he wants her to do.
He is also a very angry man who doesn’t want to live any more, and has arranged his own suicide, however the job seems to be getting his creative juices flowing again.

I liked the narration of this book and the gruesome murders were even more graphic when they are being spoken to you.

If you have seen the movie i would take it with a pinch of salt, it is completely different to the book, different murders, people, even the bad guy at the end is different.

So even though it is a brilliant movie, the book always does it better.

IntGdBN4_400x400

About the book

Lincoln Rhyme was once a brilliant criminologist, a genius in the field of forensics — until an accident left him physically and emotionally shattered. But now a diabolical killer is challenging Rhyme to a terrifying and ingenious duel of wits.

With police detective Amelia Sachs by his side, Rhyme must follow a labyrinth of clues that reaches back to a dark chapter in New York City’s past — and reach further into the darkness of the mind of a madman who won’t stop until he has stripped life down to the bone.

The Flower Girls by Alice Clark-Platts @aclarkplatts @EmiliaFox @audibleuk @BloomsburyRaven #Thriller #Mystery #AudiobookReview

The sun is finally shining here in the gloomy UK, I’m not sure how long it is going to last, but my windows are all open, and I can hang my washing on the line Wahoo!

I get so excited about the most ridiculous things ๐Ÿ˜‚

I am super happy to bring you my review of this fab little thriller.

Why did I pick it up? – I received a paper copy of this last year, my first unsolicited paperback, I was so excited lol, but because I am an audio girl I patiently waited for this one to be released, and then grabbed it as soon as I could.

My Thoughts

This one is a bit of a slow burner, it starts off at a steady pace, but once it gets it’s heels in, it’s a race to the finish line, and I think a photo finish is just what it deserves!

1997 – Laurel and Primrose (Rosie for short) are sisters, Laurel is 10 and Rosie is 6, they are out playing in the park when they entice a small toddler to play down the canal path with them.

The body of that toddler is later discovered brutally murdered and the 2 girls dubbed The Flower Girls in court are arrested, unfortunately Rosie is too young to be prosecuted, so Laurel stands trial for murder.

Rosie and her parents are given new identities because of the media backlash and they move far away.

Laurel serves her time, and 19 years later is up for parole, but the family of the murdered toddler have strong objections.

Meanwhile, Hazel and her boyfriend are at a fancy hotel celebrating her 25th Birthday when a little 5 year old girl goes missing.

The similarities between Hazel and the lesser known Rosie are noticed.

Could she be the missing Flower Girl?

Could she be responsible for the missing girl?

๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง – Narrated by Emilia Fox who is a regular on TV in the UK in things like Silent Witness.

Emilia did an outstanding job narrating this one, I was very impressed with her narration skills, and will certainly not hesitate in buying another book that he has narrated again.

If you are familiar with the news in the UK, then you may remember the murder of James Bulger, this was the first thing that popped into my head while reading this, I remember it being on every TV channel, and in every newspaper when I went into the shops, so I think that the media portrayal in this book was very well done.

**Thank you to Bloomsbury Raven and the author for sending me a copy of the book

4 Unlucky For Some Stars โญโญโญโญ

The first thing that grabbed me about this book is the Tagline

THE SERIAL KILLER ISN’T ON TRIAL.

HE’S ON THE JURY…

I mean, that just screams ‘buy me’ right?

This is #4 in the Eddie Flynn series…did I know this before I bought it? No, no I did not!

Luckily it didn’t sway me from following the story, I read it as a stand alone, and apart from a couple of references to a previous crime, and a marriage problem between Flynn and his wife, I didn’t feel that I missed out on any important information.

The Blurb

They were Hollywood’s hottest power couple. They had the world at their feet. Now one of them is dead and Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife.

This is the celebrity murder trial of the century and the defence want one man on their team: con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn.

All the evidence points to Robert’s guilt, but as the trial begins a series of sinister incidents in the court room start to raise doubts in Eddie’s mind.

What if there’s more than one actor in the courtroom?

What if the killer isn’t on trial? What if the killer is on the jury?

My Thoughts

4 Unlucky For Some Stars โญโญโญโญ

Thirteen is a legal Thriller (if you hadn’t worked that out already) and follows the story of Eddie Flynn.

His new job? Defending Robert ‘Bobby’ Soloman, a hugely famous Hollywood actor who is accused of murdering his new wife and his security guard.
It seems, and also comes across as an open and shut case, but things aren’t always as they seem.

What is great about this story, is that along with the accused, we also follow the serial killer Kane.

Kane is a killer on a mission, his mission is to get himself on that jury, in fact, he will do anything to get on there.

Kane is a sociopath, he is very clever, cunning, and totally brutal, he has no feelings for anything, or anyone, and boy do we see it!

Told in first person (Eddie) and third person (Kane) narrative, we get to look inside the mind of a serial killer from both sides, and what a fab ride it is!

Another new narrator for me, he did a great job narrating this book, his character voices were fab and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you like a Courtroom Thriller then you’ll love this one.

Ok then, who’s up for a dark, twisted thriller??

**Holds hand up**

The Blurb

She’s a friendly voice on the phone. But can you trust her?

The people who call End of the Line need hope. They need reassurance that life is worth living. But some are unlucky enough to get through to Laura. Laura doesnโ€™t want them to hope. She wants them to die.

Laura hasnโ€™t had it easy: she’s survived sickness and a difficult marriage only to find herself heading for forty, unsettled and angry. She doesn’t love talking to people worse off than she is. Sheย cravesย it.

But now someoneโ€™s on to her – Ryan, whose world falls apart when his pregnant wife ends her life, hand in hand with a stranger. Who was this man, and why did they choose to die together?

The sinister truth is within Ryan’s grasp, but he has no idea of the desperate lengths Laura will go to…

Because the best thing about being a Good Samaritan is that you can get away with murder.

My Thoughts

โญโญโญโญ Chilling Stars

“Good afternoon, you’ve reached the End of the Line, this is Laura speaking. May I ask your name?”

Laura is a soft spoken woman, she will listen to you as you discuss your problems, you will tell her what is making you feel so sad, and of course you wouldn’t be calling the End of the Line helpline, if you wasn’t contemplating ending your own life.

She will not try and talk you out of committing suicide, or tell you that there are better things, no, she is just there to listen to you, and not judge.

Laura is a very well liked colleague in the office, always bringing in her gorgeous hand-baked goods, she keeps herself to herself, and doesn’t mix much, but she always gets involved with charitable volunteering, and always raises lots of money for good causes.

What the people she works with don’t see, is that actually Laura is Bat-Shit-Crazy!

If you are feeling that you are loosing your way and are contemplating ending your life, and just needed someone to talk to, the worst possible person that you could get through to in the call centre would be Laura!

You see, Laura likes the fact that you want to end your life, in fact, she’s banking on it!

Ryan doesn’t know why his pregnant girlfriend would kill herself, and who was the man she was seen holding hands with before they both jumped? He can’t understand why she would want to do this to him and their unborn child, perhaps he needs to do a little investigating?

A cracking thriller to keep you on your toes, with a Good Ol’ Baddie you’ll hate-to-love-to-hate.

๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง – Narrated expertly by Elizabeth Knowelden, who is a new to me narrator.

Elizabeth’s voice was perfect for Laura and she made this fantastic read even better.

Buckle yourself in, it’s a bumpy ride

The Blurb

Two years ago, Tom and Caroline Johnson chose to end their lives; one seemingly unable to live without the other. Their daughter Anna is struggling to come to terms with her parents’ deaths, unable to accept the verdict of suicide.

Now with a young baby herself, she feels her mother’s presence keenly and is determined to find out what really happened to her parents. But as Anna digs up the past, someone is trying to stop her.

Sometimes it’s safer to let things lie . . .

My Thoughts

I was excited to read this book as the authors other 2 books have been fantastic, and this one was no different.

Be prepared for a few twists to make you go “Wait…What?”

The story revolves around Anna and the death of her parents, she is grief stricken, not only because of the fact that she has lost her parents, but because of the way they died.

Two years ago, her father sent her mother a text saying “I can’t do this anymore” a few hours later his shoes, wallet and phone were found at the top of Beachy Head, and a witness called the police to say that he had jumped off of the cliff, 6 months later, her heartbroken mother did the same!

Now for you guys not living in the UK, you may not know what Beachy Head is, so here is a picture.

beachyhead02

Now although beautiful and a popular tourist attraction, Beachy Head is unfortunately more famous for being a popular suicide spot, you may have seen it featured in the 70’s movie Quadrophenia, that iconic last scene was Beachy Head!

From Wikipedia

“There are an estimated 20 deaths by suicide a year at Beachy Head. The Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team conducts regular day and evening patrols of the area in attempts to locate and stop potential jumpers.
Workers at the pub and taxi drivers are also on the look-out for people contemplating suicide, and there are posted signs with the telephone number of the Samaritans urging potential jumpers to call them”

Anna is now a new mother and her baby takes up most of her time, she and her partner Mark live together in Anna’s parents house, and apart from the obvious depression that Anna is suffering from, she is mostly coping quite well with life……Until the note!

“Suicide…think Again!”

A fabulous read that is bound to keep you on your toes, and the edge of your seat.

๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽงNarrated by Gemma Whelan, who is a new to me narrator, she did a great job with this story, and I was really impressed with her.

If you like twists and turns in a story, and you have a spare credit, you won’t go wrong with this one!!
