Guest Post

At the beginning of Reunited with Her Blue-Eyed Billionaire, ghostwriter Jamie Rutkowski attends her best friend, Keisha’s, engagement party in a traffic stopping pink dress and sexy stilettos. The shoes are killing her feet, but the pain is worth it.  Why? Because her ex-boyfriend, Whit Martin is attending the same party, and she’ll be damned if her wealthy, former lover sees her looking like anything less than a million bucks.  Or, to quote the conversation she has with Keisha:

“What’s wrong with making sure that when Whit sees me, he knows I’m successful and living my best life?”

“You don’t need a dress for that,” Keisha replied. “You’ve got a fantastic career. How many other people do you know who have had two books hit the bestseller lists?”

“Neither of which had my name on the cover,” Jamie pointed out. None of her ghostwritten pieces did. Made bragging about her achievements difficult. “This dress will communicate my winner status without my having to say a word. Then all I have to do is smile dismissively, flip my ponytail, and tell him ‘Later’.”

Keisha pursed her smoked purple lips. “A classic passive-aggressive move. I approve.”

Excerpt from Reunited with her Blue-Eyed Billionaire

We’ve all been there, right? Forget all that stuff about how living your best life is the best revenge.  When we run into an old crush, or the person who dumped you in college or even the partner we kicked to the curb, not only do we want them to see that we’re living our best life, but we want them to regret losing us.

A picture containing person Description automatically generated

Petty?  You bet.  Human? Absolutely. Why else would there be a zillion articles online about how to make your ex jealous?

But why do we do this?  I mean, why do we feel the need to seek passive-aggressive revenge on someone we most likely don’t even want back?

It’s because no matter how over a person we may be, a part of our subconscious remains attached.

When we fall in love, our brain produces dopamine.  You know dopamine, it’s the neurotransmitter or chemical that lights up our when we feel pleasure.  The more pleasure an action provides, the more dopamine.  Our brain encodes the experience by recalling the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, etc. so that we can remember and repeat the experience.  It’s the reason why we can want more than one bite of cake or more good sex.

Seeing an ex triggers a similar response. The mention of their name or the sight of them entering a room reminds a portion of our brain that this person once gave us pleasure.

It’s an automatic response, and it’s perfectly normal.  These little, automatic “spurts” (for lack of a better term) don’t mean we still have deep feelings. They may be, however, what makes us need to overtly prove we’re living our best life.

Or we’re all a little petty.  Either way, I say it’s okay.

A picture with a sign that says Super Petty

Figure 2 Courtesy of Giphy

Of course, in Reunited with her Blue-Eyed Billionaire, Jamie only thinks she’s over Whit Martin.  Even though she’s gone on to build a very successful career, her first love remains her one true love.  Too bad her revenge plan is a success. Whit takes one look at her in that pink dress and decides that Jamie really is living her best life without him.

What he’d figured would be a one-night stand had lasted the rest of the college year. Jamie, he’d quickly realized, was prettier, funnier and smarter than most of the girls on campus. Why waste time chasing second best? In fact, he’d almost—almost—suggested they try a long-distance thing, but she’d been so cool about his leaving for Europe that he didn’t. “Who says I’m looking for a commitment?” he’d remembered her saying the very first night they’d slept together.”

How different his life might have been if he hadn’t changed his mind. Looking at Jamie now, it was clear she’d done just fine after he left. He wondered if she ever thought of him like he thought of her, or if he had been relegated to a pleasant but distant memory. His money was on the distant memory.

Excerpt from Reunited with her Blue-Eyed Billionaire

What you end up with is two people in love with one another, but too afraid to admit it. Will working together make them drop their defenses? Or will they blow their chance at happiness a second time? I hope you’ll buy a copy and find out.

Would you dress up to impress an ex, even if you’ve moved on? Let’s chat in the comments.

Love and Ohana Drama by Melissa Baldwin **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Friday!

It’s been a cold rainy week here in Southern California. Made this fun romcom set in Hawaii all the sweeter.🌴

Love and Ohana Drama

Love and Ohana Drama is a romantic comedy that explores the challenges of family dynamics and reminds readers that there is always hope for a second chance. Sometimes the most challenging situations bring the most happiness . . .

Twenty-something Cora Fletcher is a book-loving public relations executive who lives with her overly Zen best friend and attention-loving cat. Newly single and focusing on her exciting career, she feels like she’s in a good place. She’s even been invited on an all-expenses-paid Hawaiian vacation! The only catch—it’s a family reunion . . . and her family can be a lot to handle.

Cora vows to not let that get in the way, but even before the family has boarded the plane, the ohana drama begins. As usual, there’s the sister-in-law who is bent on causing friction, the self-centered cousins, and the aunt who loves to party a bit too much. Her mother has filled the itinerary with endless activities, and she’s even invited Cora’s ex-boyfriend in an attempt to get them back together.

Although she feels overwhelmed, Cora gets a blast from her past that could impact her life forever. This is one welcome reunion she did not expect . . .

Will Cora make it through a week of family togetherness? And will she be able to say aloha to someone she thought was out of her life forever?

My Thoughts

So much fun! Cora is not looking forward to spending a week with her family, even if it is in Hawaii. She has nothing in common with her mom and sister, her brother is married to her worst enemy, and her cousins make her want to pull her hair out. But it is her parents 40th anniversary and it’s paradise, how bad can it be? When her dad starts leading a calisthenics class in the airport and her ex boyfriend shows up to join the family vacay, Cora is now convinced her first instinct to skip the trip was correct. But when Cora gets to the islands she finds out that her childhood crush will also be joining the Festivities, maybe paradise will be just that. Ohana drama, fruity drinks, waterfalls, coconut bras, hula lessons, roasted pig, helicopter trips, family pictures, sunrise yoga, sunset vows.

Loved taking a trip to Hawaii with this crazy family. There were so many laugh out loud and heartwarming moments in this book. Cora was a great character and I loved watching her get her HEA. Also loved how this family grew closer throughout the course of their vacation. Warm sunshine, tropical breezes, ocean spray, family drama, and romance.

If I Disappear by Eliza Jane Brazier **Book Review** @berkleypub

Happy Thursday y’all!

If you are looking for your next great atmospheric thriller with a creepy vibe, look no further!👀

My Thoughts

Captivating and creepy. Atmospheric and tense. Uncomfortable and unsettling. Eliza Jane Brazier’s debut had my pulse pounding from first minute to last. Sarah is a lonely and lost 30 something with an obsession with true crime podcasts, the “Murder She Spoke“ podcast being her favorite. When Rachel the host of the MSS podcast goes missing Sarah is compelled to find her. Sarah‘s search for Rachel takes her to small town Northern California and Rachel‘s family ranch. When Sarah arrives in the small town she is surprised to find that nobody seems to be worried about where Rachel has gone. Not her family, not her friends, not the police, but Sarah is certain there are sinister things going on and she is determined to find her favorite podcaster.

The story is told in second person with Sarah speaking to the reader as if they are Rachel. There were also snippets of the podcast woven into the beginning of each chapter. The creepy feel of this ranch was so vividly described it just jumped off the pages. Sarah ends up taking a job at the ranch and is housed in disgusting quarters. I had the heebie-jeebies and wanted to gag from the description of the smell of rat droppings. *Yuck* I could just visualize the overgrown blackberry bushes and feel the impending doom. The story is filled with Unusual characters that you never quite get a handle on. Even Sarah our narrator is a complete mystery. Is she reliable? Is she crazy? What’s with the obsession? I knew she was divorced, had a nowhere job, and was about to get evicted, but other than that I really had no idea of her backstory. I think this might have added to the atmosphere of the story? I always felt a little bit off balance, a little uneasy, a couple facts short of understanding completely what was going on. A compelling thriller, looking forward to see what is next from Miss Brazier

First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn **My Mom’s Thoughts**@avonbooks

Happy Monday all!

Sharing you with today my mom’s thoughts on the prequel to Bridgerton I’m feeling a little out of it seem as though my parents have watched the show and I have not.

My Mom’s Thoughts

If you just finished binge watching “Bridgerton” and wanted more but a new Bridgerton, you won’t be disappointed by FIRST COMES SCANDAL, a Bridgerton prequel, by Julia Quinn

Georgiana Bridgerton, Daphne’s aunt, has been kidnapped by Freddie Oakes who hopes to force her to marry him and get him out of debt. She manages to escape but her reputation is ruined. Her godfather and neighbor Rokesby summons his youngest son Nicholas from Edinburgh where he is studying to be a doctor and suggests he marry Georgiana, a childhood friend. All does not go smoothly and there are a few bits of mayhem, silliness, misunderstandings, old fashioned English nonsense, and sex. This is after all a period romance!💕

About the Books

She was given two choices….

Georgiana Bridgerton isn’t against the idea of marriage. She’d just thought she’d have some say in the matter. But with her reputation hanging by a thread after she’s abducted for her dowry, Georgie is given two options: live out her life as a spinster or marry the rogue who has ruined her life.

Enter option number three…

As the fourth son of an earl, Nicholas Rokesby is prepared to chart his own course. He has a life in Edinburgh, where he’s close to completing his medical studies, and he has no time – or interest – to find a wife. But when he discovers that Georgie Bridgerton – his literal girl next door – is facing ruin, he knows what he must do.

A marriage of convenience…

It might not have been the most romantic of proposals, but Nicholas never thought she’d say no. Georgie doesn’t want to be anyone’s sacrifice, and besides, they could never think of each other as anything more than childhood friends…or could they?

But as they embark upon their unorthodox courtship they discover a new twist to the age-old rhyme. First comes scandal, then comes marriage. But after that comes love…

Hope y’all have a lovely day! XOXO Berit💐

Trust Me by Candace Hutton **Excerpt** @rararesources

happy Monday!

Cannot believe that this is the last Monday of January? Where does the time go?🌱

Trust Me

Brooke Anderson never pictured herself as a divorcee at twenty-eight. But when she mentions getting a post-nup to her husband Garrett after one deliciously sex-filled year, he promptly serves her with divorce papers. Admittedly, she could’ve told him about how her father left her and her mother homeless when she was young, and how she’s never been wired to trust anyone. Especially those closest to her. Now, all she wants to do is avoid anywhere he might be so she won’t have to face him again.

But she’s not the only one who can’t seem to trust.

Garrett Call grew up with parents who married for money and wants no part of a life that puts material possessions above love. He reinvented himself in college, complete with a new last name so he couldn’t be tied to his family’s lucrative business. He never even told Brooke the truth. Admittedly, he could’ve handled the issue of a post-nup better with his ex-wife. Maybe he didn’t count on how much he was going to miss having her in his life.

When their best friends’ wedding forces the exes to see each other again, a dangerous man from Garrett’s world threatens Brooke’s life. And they realize the only way to save themselves is to finally learn to trust each other.

Excerpt

Context: Unable to get Garrett out of her system, Brooke proposes one more night of passion between them.

“Come here,” Garrett ordered.

A shiver went down her spine at the command in his voice. She liked when he did that when they were alone. And she loved that when she obeyed him, he fucking worshipped her body.

She moved to stand in front of him and tilted her chin up to look into his beautiful green eyes.

“What is this?” he asked. “Because I’m guessing our little conversation at the table didn’t change your mind.”

“Claudia thinks we’re arguing because we need to get each other out of our systems.” She dropped her gaze to his lips, studying his perfect mouth. “I think it makes sense.”

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them, he said, “Next time you see your friend, tell her I love her.”

Brooke gasped when Garrett wrapped his large hands around her hips and picked her up to swing her onto the edge of the sink counter.

Was this really a good idea? And more importantly, would once be enough to get Garrett completely out of her system?

Villa of Sun and Secrets by Jennifer Bohnet **Audiobook Review** @rararesources

Happy Sunday book people!

This was a delightful story packed with family secrets and the warm sun!☀️

Villa of Sun and Secrets

It’s never too late to live the dream…

Carla Sullivan’s 50th birthday is fast approaching when her whole world is turned upside down. Discovering her feckless husband is having yet another affair and following her mother’s death, she is in need of an escape. Finding an envelope addressed to her mother’s estranged sister Josette in the South of France gives Carla the perfect plan.

Seizing the moment, she packs her bags and heads to Antibes to seek out the enigma known as Tante Josette. But as the two women begin to forge a tentative relationship, family secrets start to unravel, forcing Carla to question her life as she has always known it.

A heart-warming tale on the beautiful French Riviera, which will keep you guessing.

My Thoughts

A gorgeous setting and an abundance of secrets. Jennifer Bohnet swept me away to the French Riviera in this stunning tale. Carla has recently lost her mother and now she finds out her husband is cheating on her. Needing a getaway Carla remembers a letter she found in her mother’s belongings addressed to her mom’s estranged twin sister Josette. Josette has always been a bit of a mystery to Carla, she never knew what caused the rift between her mother and her sister. So Carla packs her bags and heads to France to clear her head and get to know her French side of the family. What she finds in France is a lovely aunt, a gorgeous villa, and a lot of secrets.

Julia Franklin did a wonderful job of pulling me into the story with her vivid narration of the audiobook. She did a wonderful job with giving the perfect voice and accent to each of these colorful characters. And there were quite a few accents English, French, American. My only teeny tiny complaint is occasionally especially with the male French accent I had a harder time understanding, but that’s probably just my American ear. I loved the warm sunshiny feel of this story. The Villa, the food, the sun, the wine, the romance… and of course the secrets. The overall vibe of the story was quite heartwarming although there were some definite moments of heartbreak. I was pretty impressed with how Carla handled everything being thrown at her. She was a great character, and I love that she along with the majority of the characters in the story were over the age of 50. A Beautifully told French escape.

The Newlyweds by Arianne Richmonde **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy happy weekend!

It is actually cold and rainy here in Southern California. The perfect weather to cuddle up and read a good book.☔️

My Thoughts

Oh what a tangled web we weave… this was one twisted book. Vivian and Ashton are newly married and appear to be the perfect couple. But as any seasoned thriller reader knows never ever trust anything that appears to be too perfect. Soon cracks start showing in this perfect marriage, and even though Vivian is denying everything people are beginning to become suspicious. But again, things are never quite as they seem. In this wild game of cat and mouse you never quite know, who is the cat? And who’s the mouse?

The story is told solely from the perspective of Vivian and so it becomes a matter of trust. Can you trust Vivian? Is she the victim? Or is she the predator? I really had no idea and boy oh boy did my opinion bounce all over the place throughout the story. None of these characters were tremendously likable. They had their southern charm porn but it seemed so insincere. On the surface Vivian seemed sweet and naïve, while Ashton seemed like a perfect southern gentleman. But underneath all that charm there was definitely something much more sinister. I do wish there was more tension throughout the story more of a sense of urgency. One of the twists was revealed very early and while I did want to see how it all played out I lost a little bit of interest at that point. However, the ending to this book, Holy smokes I was so tense I wanted to cover my eyes. It was so surprising there is just no way you could’ve predicted it. Not even sure it fit into the story, but it was extremely nerve-racking! And that epilogue…. well played! Just for the ending of this book I’m rounding my 3.5 up.

About the Book

One marriage. One lie. Two sides to the story.

The moment Vivien meets Ashton, she knows she will be his wife and absolutely nothing will stop her.

Powerful, rich and from a good family, Ashton is everything Vivien is not. So, she molds herself into Ashton’s perfect soulmate.

Pouring his favorite vintage wine, whispering ‘I love you’ over dinner in front of friends and biting her tongue when she disagrees with him are simple sacrifices for the perfect marriage she has always craved.

When people begin to notice the bruises on her cheek, she holds their stares. There is no cry for help from Vivien. She simply keeps her mouth shut and lets the gossip continue.

If you saw Vivien nursing a black eye, you might be forgiven for thinking what everyone else does—that she is the victim in her marriage, but you’d be wrong. Vivien and Ashton’s life together is much more complicated than that. You will never guess the true story behind Vivien’s undying devotion to her husband. Nor could you possibly predict what she does next…

Romance: no. Until she has a run in on an Alpine train with a mysterious but oh-so-gorgeous stranger…

My Thoughts

Chocolate, cheese, and serendipity! Julie Caplin’s vivid storytelling transported me to the snowy Swiss Alps. Mina is a fun loving, impetuous, free spirited Woman. when Mina‘s impetuousNess leads to an over-the-top impromptu proposal to her boyfriend things don’t go quite to plan. The bad news, the video of this humiliating moment goes viral. The good news, this leads to Mina heading to Switzerland. In Switzerland Mina stays in a charming chalet owned by her godmother where she meets all kinds of wonderful characters, including a hottie named Luke. even though Mina cannot deny her instant attraction to Luke she is putting on the breaks. Luke is way too much like her and that is NOT what she needs in her life right now. but the more time Mina spends in this gorgeous setting and with this gorgeous man the more she thinks maybe what she thought she needed is not what she needs at all.

Such a heartwarming and delightful story! I just loved everything about this book, even all the snow! mina was such a likable carefree character I just loved her spirit. She was seriously up for anything skiing both downhill and cross country, snowboarding, you name it she did it. Luke was such a charmer and there were so many moments between these two characters that so pulled at my heartstrings. One of my favorite parts of this book was the cheese and chocolate Train, cheese and chocolate are two of my favorite food groups it sounded like heaven to me! A stunning setting. Heartwarming characters. Sweet romance. Delectable goodies. A perfect escapist read.
