Smash It by Francina Simone **Book Review** @harlequinbooks @inkyardpress

Happy hump day all!

This was such a fun entertaining joyful read! Even though I know nothing about a fellow I thoroughly enjoyed this Othello retelling.🎭

My Thoughts

Authentic and messy. Bold and real. Positive and questionable. This was a young adult retelling of Othello. Now having never in my life read Othello or know a thing about Othello I couldn’t tell you if it had anything to do with Othello or not. What I can tell you is I really liked the voice of the story. Liv is a 17-year-old girl trying to find her way. Dealing with her insecurities, wanting to be noticed, but afraid to be seen. After attending a Halloween party in a hoodie and khaki shorts Liv decides it’s time to make a change. She creates a F*ck It list and vows to start stepping out of her comfort zone. One of the first things she does is tries out for the high school musical production of… you guessed it… Othello. With her besties Dre and Eli by her side Liv starts… well… living. *Pun intended*

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Liv was such a real character. She had real thoughts, feelings, insecurities, hopes, and dreams. Was she selfish? Yes, but seriously who isn’t when they’re a teenager? She made many a mistake and usually learn from them. The dialogue of the story was so authentically teenager. As a mother of teenagers who has spent some time listening to conversation between my kids friends I found it so real. Teenagers can be so crass, so insensitive, so selfish, and yet so caring. Loved Liv’s friendship with Lennox and Jackie. The sex positivity and the body positivity were fabulous. Eli and Dre we’re great friends and I really liked Liv’s crush on Eli. What I didn’t necessarily love about the book was how entangled and messy everything got towards the end. I think perhaps the story could have done without that, but maybe that has to do with the Othello retailing? A well told story with a genuine feel.

About the Book

Olivia “Liv” James is done with letting her insecurities get the best of her. So she does what any self-respecting hot mess of a girl who wants to SMASH junior year does…

After Liv shows up to a Halloween party in khaki shorts—why, God, why?—she decides to set aside her wack AF ways. She makes a list—a F*ck-It list.

1. Be bold—do the thing that scares me.

2. Learn to take a compliment.

3. Stand out instead of back.

She kicks it off by trying out for the school musical, saying yes to a date and making new friends. Life is great when you stop punking yourself! However, with change comes a lot of missteps, and being bold means following her heart. So what happens when Liv’s heart is interested in three different guys—and two of them are her best friends? What is she supposed to do when she gets dumped by a guy she’s not even dating? How does one Smash It! after the humiliation of being friend-zoned?

In Liv’s own words, “F*ck it. What’s the worst that can happen?”

A lot, apparently.

Christmas at Carly’s Cupcakes by Jessica Redland **Book Review** @rararesources @BoldwoodBooks

Happy Monday friends!

I’ve got another festive review for you today! This was such a sweet holiday story.🧁

Christmas on Castle Street Blog Tour – #ChristmasonCastleStreet

Christmas at Carly’s Cupcakes

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

It’s December on Castle Street; the fairy lights are twinkling, snow has settled and the festive season is in full swing.

For Carly, the owner of Carly’s Cupcakes, it’s the busiest time of year getting everyone’s Christmas treats ready on time. However with her clumsy sister, Bethany, as a co-worker, it’s proving a difficult task. They say you shouldn’t mix work with family. Maybe they have a point…

As Christmas approaches, Carly is also eagerly awaiting the return of her best friend to Whitborough Bay. Liam has no idea he’s been the object of her affection since their schooldays. After years of pining after him, can Carly pluck up the courage to finally tell him how she really feels by 25th December?

Could a little festive magic make all of Carly’s wishes come true this Christmas…?

A heartwarming, short festive story of friendship and family from bestseller Jessica Redland. You can find out what happens to Carly next through exploring her best friend Tara’s story in Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Café.

This is a new and updated version of Christmas at Carly’s Cupcakes which has been previously published.

My Thoughts

A short but sweet festive tale. It is always a treat visiting the folks on Castle Street. Christmas and cupcakes. Sisters and second chances. Weddings and kisses. Carly is busy baking her way to Christmas and helping with her sister Bethany‘s wedding. Bethany is also meant to be helping out Carly, but her insecurities and clumsy ways can be a bit of a hindrance. And if that’s not enough Carly‘s oldest friend Liam is coming back from the army. Carly has always had a bit of a crush on Liam, but has always been afraid to admit it. Will wedding bells ring? Will there be kisses under the mistletoe? You will need to read this book to find out.

This book left me with a smile on my face and craving a cupcake. Carly was a great character I found her so relatable and was so hoping things would work out between Liam and her. Bethany was seriously frustrating. There were moments in this book I wanted to reach through the pages and smack some sense into the girl. As always I loved the sense of community and camaraderie between the shop owners on Castle Street. So grab the hot chocolate, turn on the tree lights, and have yourself a merry little Christmas read.

Stuck On You by Portia MacIntosh **Book Review** @rararesources @boldwoodbooks

Happy Monday all!

This book was so so good! I just adored every minute I spend with these characters!🧝🏼

Stuck On You

Could a post-it note really lead to love…?

Sadie doesn’t have time for finding love. She’s too busy as PA for famous artist Damian Banks. When she’s not arranging exhibitions, she’s organising his dry cleaning or dumping his never ending stream of girlfriends.

But when she strikes up an unusual friendship with her desk share buddy, she finds a confidante and a new potential love interest. Problem is, they’ve never actually met…

With Christmas just around the corner, can Sadie put herself first for a change and find what she’s been looking for all along?

The brand new romantic comedy from top 10 bestseller Portia MacIntosh. Perfect for fans of Sophie Ranald, Mhairi McFarlane and Zara Stoneley.

My Thoughts

Fun, feel good, and festive. Portia MacIntosh has fast become an auto read Author for me. She writes charming romcoms filled with colorful characters, witty banter, and sweet moments. Sadie works for famous photographer Damien Banks as his assistant. Her job requires her to purchase Christmas presents, break up with girlfriends, fetch coffee, and various other menial tasks. And I can’t forget spending a weekend with a wife killer. The only good part of her job is her post it note relationship with a coworker who shares her desk on the days she’s not there. SO how is it that after Sadie gets her new dream job she ends up bringing boss Damian home for Christmas?

So much fun! Sadie and Damien work wonderful characters who I absolutely adored. OK well truth be told I didn’t love Damien from the beginning but I thought that was part of the charm of the story. Just like he did Sadie, Damien grew on me throughout the book. Love spending time with Damian, Sadie, her family, and their five days of Christmas. Seriously how can you not fall in love with a guy who will wear elf ears for your family, race around delivering Christmas cards with you, wear his pajamas to the movies, and remember your favorite childhood game. I just loved absolutely everything about this book!

The Bluebell Girls by Barbara Josselsohn **Book Review** @bookouture

Hello book friends!

Hope you had a fantastic weekend! My sleeping schedule has been all over the place. I think with so much going on in the world I am more stressed out than I’m willing to admit to therefore haven’t been able to sleep much, but that’s a good thing for my reading!🌼

My Thoughts

A sweet, small town, second chance romance. Barbara Josselsohn has written a delightful heartwarming story. This is the second book in the Lake Summers series, but it can absolutely be red as a standalone. The books contain A complete story with the only constant in the series being location and the smoothie guys. Jenna has returned home to Lake Summers with her daughter Sophie to care for her aging mother, Sweet. It always feels good to come back home, but it is also complicated. Jenna is concerned with her mothers health, doesn’t know if it’s better thooo have her stay home or move to a home. And then there’s Troy, the boy next-door who Jenna really never had closure with. To top it all off Suite has Sophie on a wild goose chase searching down an old love who may or may not exist.

Loved the small town feel of the story. The relationships between Jenna her mother Sweet and her daughter Sophie were so authentic and heartwarming. I thought the story was the perfect balance of family drama and second chance romance. Troy was a great love interest, such a good guy you really wanted him to find his happily ever after, even if it wasn’t with Jenna. The mysterious movie star love interest added a whimsical layer to the story. This was just an uplifting feel-good story filled with heart, hope, and nostalgia.

About the Book

Three generations. One summer that will change everything.

Growing up in Lake Summers, Jenna and her mother Sweet were known as the bluebell girls. Jenna was carefree, always running barefoot through their wildflower garden, and no one expected her to live in their little lake house in the Adirondack Mountains forever. But when Sweet’s health declines Jenna must return from her life near New York, and with her own daughter Sophie in tow, their family home comes to life again.

Away from the stress of her recent divorce, Jenna finds comfort in lazy afternoons along the water and long nights watching Sweet tell Sophie stories about her long-lost loves. And when she meets Sweet’s new next-door neighbour Troy, she recognizes him instantly as the boy with whom she shared her first kiss.

Seeing Troy reminds Jenna of just how reckless she once was, but as their feelings resurface, so do the secrets they hide about a tragedy in their past. And with Sweet and Sophie closer than ever before, Jenna is forced to make a choice: will she flee again, or is she finally brave enough to be honest with Troy and settle down in Lake Summers forever?

An unforgettable romance that will whisk you away to the sunny shores of Lake Summers. Perfect for fans of Carolyn Brown, Debbie Macomber, Mary Alice Monroe and anyone who’s ever dreamed of rekindling a long-lost love.

Starry Skies Over the Chocolate Pot Café by Jessica Redland **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Friday all!

All I want for Christmas is a new president! I really try to stay unpolitical on my blog, but it’s enough already! Thank goodness for lovely Christmas books to let me escape from the news of the world.❄️

Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Café

Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Café Cosy up with a mug of hot chocolate for some festive sparkle from bestseller Jessica Redland.

Everyone is getting into the festive spirit on Castle Street – snow is falling, fairy lights are glistening and Christmas shopping is underway.

But for Tara Porter, owner of thriving cafe, The Chocolate Pot, this is the most difficult time of the year. From the outside, Tara is a successful businesswoman and pillar of the community. Behind closed doors, she is lonely.

With a lifetime of secrets weighing on her shoulders, she has retreated from all friends, family and romance, and shut her real self away from the world. Afterall, if you don’t let them in, they can’t hurt you. She’s learnt that the hard way.

But as the weight of her past becomes heavier and an unexpected new neighbour moves onto the street – threatening the future of her cafe – Tara begins to realise that maybe it’s time to finally let people back in and confront her history. It could just change her life forever…

Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Café was originally released as Christmas at The Chocolate Pot Café. Now re-released with a new title and new cover, this version has been freshly edited and features several new chapters.

My Thoughts

A cozy and heartwarming festive story! Tara is a bit of a Grinch. She is a very private person who nobody knows all that well and she likes it like that. She is busy running the Chocolate Pot Café and running from her past. But the store owners of Castle Street have a way of worming themselves into your heart, even if it is three sizes too small. Loved this enchanting tale. The story definitely made me happy and hungry. Tara is a sympathetic character who I loved watch grow throughout the course of the book. Loved the friendships and sense of community in this charming village. This is a can’t miss for any Christmas book fan!

The White Coat Diaries by Madi Sinha **Book Review** @BerkleyPub

Happy Tuesday all!

This was such an authentic Story. A perfect blend of culture and drama.🩺

My Thoughts

A compelling story of personal, familial, and cultural expectations. Madi Sinha is a practicing physician, she really brought an authentic feel to the story and yet it was still extremely accessible. This is the story of Nora and her first year of residency at a prestigious hospital in Philadelphia. We watch Nora deal with the stress, the rigor, the sleepless nights, and the politics of her year as the intern. This is definitely not sugarcoated. It is a year of being judged, humiliated, humbled, shamed, and rarely complemented. All I could think while I was reading this is, why would anyone put themselves through this? And then I thought why do we need to put anyone through this? I really don’t understand why a sleep deprived doctor is ever a good idea it just seems like it’s a recipe for mistakes. BUT believe it or not… nobody asked me. On top of all this Nora is also dealing with familial and cultural expectations. Her mom is lonely, needy, and a hypochondriac. She is constantly making Nora feel guilty for her choices. Not to mention mom is constantly badgering Nora to find a man. Nora‘s brother Paul is at his wits end and tired of being the only one responsible for their mom, he wants Nora to share the load. But how can Nora do that when she’s working constantly not to mention she lives hours away.

Nora was a very likable and sympathetic character. She has spent her whole life working for this. Foregoing any type of romantic or social life to reach her dream of being a doctor. I felt for her and the struggle she had in balancing everything. Her mom‘s actions would frustrate me, but I did understand that her culture is different from my own. I love the part the Indian culture played in the book, especially the food! There is a small dose of romance in this book, but this is by no stretch of the imagination a romance or a romcom. I would classify this as a well done interesting women’s fiction story.

One Winter’s Night by Kiley Dunbar **Book Review** @rararesources @herabooks

Happy Tuesday all!

This was an entertaining uplifting story with a perfect peppering of festive cheer!❄️

One Winter’s Night

A gorgeously uplifting, romantic read that will warm your heart – take a trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where magic happens…

It’s autumn in beautiful Stratford-Upon-Avon and Kelsey Anderson is enjoying her new life in her adopted town. Her Shakespearean tour guide days behind her, she’s now opened her own photography studio and loved up with boyfriend Jonathan – even if a long-distance relationship is sometimes lonely.

When best friend Mirren Imrie moves down from Scotland, Kelsey is delighted to have her friend at her side – and as the nights turn colder, Mirren throws herself into dating, until she finds herself growing closer to sexy journalist, Adrian Armadale. But when Mirren uncovers a long-buried scandal while working at the local newspaper, her big scoop might throw Kelsey’s – and Jonathan’s – life upside down. Will she choose her career over her friends’ happiness?

And when Jonathan returns from America and discovers the secrets Mirren has uncovered about his family, it throws his relationship with Kelsey onto shaky ground. Can they find their way back to love, before it becomes the winter of their discontent?

A romantic, funny and feelgood read that will make you smile from ear to ear. Fans of Milly Johnson, Heidi Swain and Holly Martin will fall in love with this cosy winter read!

My Thoughts

This was an engaging feel good story. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with these charming characters in Statford-Upon-Avon. This is a follow-up to Kiley Dunbar’s ONE SUMMER’S NIGHT, but it can most definitely be read as a standalone. The story bounces back-and-forth between the perspectives of Kelsey and her BFF Merrin. Kelsey is starting a new photography business and learning to navigate her long distance relationship with her actor boyfriend Jonathan. Merrin has had it with her misogynistic work environment in Scotland and has decided to stay with her friend Kelsey for a while to regroup. Really liked both Kelsey and Merrin. It was amusing watching them live together in a shoebox sized apartment. I enjoyed watching Kelsey get her business off the ground and for Merrin to find her footing again. Kelsey’s enigmatic neighbor Blythe was a lovely addition to the story. Some romance, a little mystery, New beginnings, second chances, good friends, A dash of Shakespeare, and a peppering of festive cheer. This was just such a great feel-good story that warmed my heart.

A Stargazy Night Sky by Laura Briggs **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Monday y’all!

Love this series and I will be sad to see it end. But wow did this book leave me with more questions than answers!💫

A Stargazy Night Sky

Starry autumn nights are bringing a rare celestial event and exciting new guests to the shores of the sleepy hotel Penmarrow.

Maisie is happy to be back among its staff, even with the question of its future ownership still in the air and the fate of her unpublished manuscript soon to be in the hands of London acquisitions editors. More than anything else, she’s happy to finally be in a relationship with Sidney Daniels, the sparks between them no longer denied. She’s excited for the future and things couldn’t be better with regards to romance … except for those lingering little questions about Sidney’s uncertain past, that is.

Meanwhile, the staff at the Penmarrow is tasked with hosting a special celestial conference where stargazers are gathering for a glimpse of the much-anticipated comet. The ever-timid maid Molly is flustered by the return of charming astronomer George and seems to need a little advice on how to rekindle the spark they shared last autumn. Hotel porters Gomez and Riley vie for the attentions of a mysterious female guest, the eccentric ‘Megs’ Buntly pays another visit, and a dramatic revelation about someone on staff will leave Maisie and everyone else reeling from the unexpected news. Is this the moment for the revelation Maisie has been waiting for since her Cornish journey began?

Brimming with humor, romance, and the kind of surprises its fans have come to expect, the seventh book in the series brings a twist at the end that’s sure to leave readers excited — and anxious — for the conclusion of Maisie’s original gorgeous Cornish adventure.

My Thoughts

This is the seventh book in this delightful series. I have really enjoyed watching Maisie’s Journey throughout the series. In this book finally Maisie and Sydney are together, but they still have secrets between them. Maisie is offered an opportunity to meet the enigmatic Alistair Quinn. Will she finally meet her literary hero? The story also includes a stargazer convention and a little romance for Molly and George. This book really asked more questions then it answered and I’m looking forward to the conclusion of the series out next month.

My Christmas Number One by Leonie Mack **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy hump day!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well maybe not, but it sure is fun escaping into these festive Christmas wreaths.❄️

My Christmas Number One

There’s nothing quite like a Christmas love story, to get you in the mood for celebrating…

Cara doesn’t do sexy and she only does ‘Happy Christmas’ under duress. She is, after all, a serious musician, and her stubborn streak is born from her struggle to recover from a serious injury.

Javi lives for escapist fun – in his music, and in his life – especially since he’s always failed at life’s more serious challenges, including marriage and fatherhood.

Javi and Cara are forced to record a Christmas single together, but neither of them have plans to spend any more time with each other than they absolutely have to. With Christmas traditions that couldn’t be more different, and outlooks on life that are worlds apart, the chemistry just shouldn’t work. But the magic of Christmas can bring even opposites together…

From the snowy beauty of London at Christmas, to the candle-lit magic of Javi’s traditional family celebrations, let Leonie Mack whisk you away on a memorable festive adventure. Perfect for fans of Trisha Ashley, Mandy Baggot and Holly Martin.

My Thoughts

The perfect blend of music, culture, and festive Cheer. This is the perfect Christmas romance for the person that does not like Christmas romances. It is definitely Christmas light, a captivating and emotional will they won’t they love story. Cara is a serious musician, so she is not very thrilled when she is told she is under contract to collaborate on a Christmas song with a Latin popstar. Javi has the reputation as a playful ladies man, but there is more to him than meets the eyes. The two begin to email and realize they might have more in common then these opposites first thought. The two meat and there is definite chemistry, but this can’t happen…can it?

Admittedly when I pick up a Christmas book I am not thinking Columbia. But it was such a treat to travel there through the pages of this book. The authors love and knowledge of music really shown through and the story. It was really interesting watching these two artist collaborate on the song and seeing the world through the eyes of a musician. The pacing of the story wasn’t always perfect, but I really liked these characters. Both Cara and Javvi were likable characters flaws and all. The secondary characters were wonderful and added some definite heart to the story. This is a Christmas book that can definitely be read any time of the year.
