My Thoughts

What a fun book! A little romance, a little mystery, and a lot of fun! Lexie is back planning another wedding and hoping things go more smoothly this time. Unfortunately it looks as though somebody is out to get her. Between the crazy practical jokes being played on the obnoxious best man and a rival wedding agency starting rumors, Lexie is determined to keep the agencies reputation intact. Once again Theo is there along with Jasper and Freya to offer support and puzzle out what is going on. Lexie is such a wonderful character and I just loved this wedding that she planned. It was just so sweet and perfect and topped off with a fete for all the people of the village. Rides and games and yummy treats. There were a lot of humorous moments especially some of the practical jokes played on Noah The Best man. The romance was very subtle and sweet between Theo and Lexie, I am excited to see what the future holds for these two.

How’s life treating you? Read any good books lately?This was a fun cozy who done it with a charming setting!

My Thoughts

A cozy and charming who done it. Kate is a nurse who just moved to a small village in Cornwall for a quieter life. *Kate must not read enough, seems as though every time you move to a small village for a quieter life things happen* not Long after Kate and her sister arrive in the village a body is discovered and the victim was killed by her own cake knife. Kate soon learns through the village grapevine and her patients that the victim Fenella had a lot of enemies. A lot of enemies equals a lot of suspects, and Kate is determined to suss out the culprit. Local police chief Woody Forest *Best name ever* ends up teaming up with Cate to puzzle together the mystery. OK a little far-fetched that the police would welcome a civilian into the investigation. BUT Kate is an expert. She has watched lots and lots of murder mysteries on television, make sense. *so now I’m thinking I too am an expert* In spite of Kates questionable expertise she was a great character and this was a fun book. I loved puzzling the mystery together and was suspicious of everyone in the village at one time or another. The setting was so charming I absolutely loved how the village and the surrounding area was described. An entertaining start to what looks like a compelling new cozy mystery series.

Aged 18, Dee arrived in London from Scotland and typed her way round the West End for a couple of years before joining BOAC (forerunner of British Airways) in Passenger Services for 2 years and then as a stewardess for 8 years.

She has worked in Market Research, Sales and at the Thames TV Studios when they had the franchise.

Dee has since relocated to Cornwall, where she spent 10 years running B&Bs, and only began writing when she was over 70!

What I Know by Miranda Smith **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy weekend all!

Wow! What a crazy thriller! So deliciously dark!

My Thoughts

Two psychopaths for the price of one! Miranda Smith has written a deliciously dark thriller like no other you’ve read before. Della is a happily married teacher trying to put the past behind her. That is until the day Zoe shows up in her classroom. There is something in the girl’s eyes that reminds Della of her brother Brian, the brother who tried to kill her when she was only 13. When something happens at the school and Della finds out more details about the event, she is more convinced than ever that Zoe is evil. The story bounces back-and-forth between past and present, Della dealing with her brother Brian and then Zoe. All the characters in the story were so well developed. Della was great, I was frightened and frustrated right alongside her. Brian and Zoe were so manipulative, charming, and calculating. Most of the secondary characters were so maddening, they just did not want to believe Della. And if I’m being honest there were times in the book I started to doubt her myself. A very compelling tale of evil.

Let me tell you a little story
Are you sitting comfortably?

Then let me begin!

Once upon a time there lived a woman called Maggie, she lives with her daughter Nina.

Maggie loves her daughter very very much, she loves her maybe a little too much, and this makes her very interfering in Nina’s life.

Nina doesn’t appreciate this and holds a lot of resentment toward Maggie, yet she still lives with her mother, even at nearly 40 years old.

Nina has become a bit of a bitter woman, holding grudges, and even though she projects these onto Nina, she has secrets that she is hiding, but Maggie has hers too!

They are civil with each other, and eat dinner with each other every other night, and because Maggie is older now and now quite frail, Nina helps her up the stairs to her room, well, I suppose she needs the help really because of the chains she is attached to.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the fact that Nina has her mother chained up in the attic, sorry about that….My bad!!

You have to read this one to believe it.

Agony Auntics by Julie Butterfeild **Book Review** @rararesources

Happy Friday all!

This was such a fun book! I can’t even count how many times I was laughing out loud! It was just what I needed!

Agony Auntics

As an agony aunt, Fliss Carmichael should have all the answers but when her own marriage begins unravelling at the seams, she hasn’t a clue where to start. After a simple mistake causes an unintended role swap, she becomes the one seeking advice from an unlikely source!

My Thoughts

Laugh out loud fun! Julie Butterfield has written a humorous uplifting tale. Fliss Rights an advice column as an Agony Aunt (similar to Dear Abby here in the US). Ellie reaches out asking for advice on how to talk to a guy at work she is crushing/falling in love with. Fliss is reminded of the beginning of her relationship with her husband Jasper and in her response mentions to Ellie that her marriage has become a little stagnant. The women start a correspondence offering one another advice and keeping one another up on the events in their lives.

I loved how these two stories were told side-by-side. The blossoming of new love and a marriage needing tending to. Both Ellie and Fliss were so likable and relatable women you’d love to be friends with. Now I have to admit I wasn’t quite certain how Ellie thought she was in love with Logan a guy she’s never even talked to? Especially because she just got out of a relationship with a pretty good guy. Fliss I really felt for. She was trying so hard and Jasper wow he could be a real jerk. There were so many humorous moments in this book that had me laughing so hard tears were coming out my eyes. So the next time you’re in the mood for a good belly laugh pick this one up!

If you’re like me and love watching women’s gymnastics this is the perfect read for you! 🤸🏻‍♀️

My Thoughts

A gold medal read for all gymnastic fans! Are you bummed that there aren’t going to be Olympics this summer? This might be the perfect book to tie you over until next year (hopefully). Hannah Orenstein has spun a fun and uplifting tale. She also didn’t pull any punches when it came to some of the darker parts and scandals surrounding today’s gymnastics. Avery was an elite gymnast who just fell short of making it to the Olympics. Knowing nothing else bud gymnastics Avery went into a deep depression and this led to some destructive behavior. It’s eight years later and Avery has just been dumped by her famous football player boyfriend. She has moved back home and it is time to start over. When Ryan, an old crush and fellow gymnast reaches out to her with a offer to Coach Avery jumps at the chance. Now Avery is back in the same gym she trained in years ago coaching Olympic hopeful Hallie.

Really loved all the gymnastics talk in this book, I’ve always loved watching the sport. Avery was a sympathetic character, I’ve often thought of what happens to those girls that poor everything they have into a sport just to fall a bit short? I really loved the bond between Avery and Hallie I think it was nice that Hallie had someone in her corner that truly understood. Why this book will not be getting a perfect score from me is because of the romance. I really don’t think this is a romance it is more women’s fiction with a dash of romance in the backdrop. Additionally the romance itself just didn’t work for me. I really didn’t see the spark between Ryan and Avery and could not understand what the attraction was other than that they had a crush on one another a decade ago? Not to mention Ryan did a few pretty shady things. This didn’t necessarily detract from my overall enjoyment of the book it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I would be remiss if I did not mention Avery’s amazing roommate Sarah! She had such a great energy and was so supportive to not only Avery but to Hallie as well.

Can I Give My Husband Back? by Kristen Bailey **Book Review** @bookouture

This was such a fun fun book! So many laugh out loud moments, just made my day all that much better!

My Thoughts

Fun fun fun! Kristen Bailey brightened my day with this laugh out loud story packed with wit and authenticity. No sugarcoating Here, this was a humorous look at real people with real problems. This is the story of Emma, mother to two little girls Iris and Violet. Emma has recently left her philandering, no good, arrogant husband Simon. Simon was really one of the most despicable men I’ve read about in a long time and that’s saying something because I read a lot of thrillers full of slimy bastards. Emma was so likable and relatable, this probably made Simon look even worse. Their two young daughters Iris and Violet were adorable, love their curiosity as they tried to figure out what was going on with the adults around them. The highlight of the book really was Emma‘s relationship with her four sisters, especially youngest sister Lucy who is currently living with her. Lucy’s antics made me laugh more than once, especially when she was competing in a princess Elsa- Frozen contest. Emma meets a new man in the book and the romance was sweet but understated, and I appreciated that. This was an entertaining real occasionally vulgar look at the not so pretty side of life. I am definitely looking forward to more stories to come involving these sisters.

It’s normal to prefer getting a filling at the dentist’s to spending time with your husband, right?

I thought I was sorted on the life front. I was a heart surgeon with a loving partner and two gorgeous little girls. Except my husband’s version of ‘loving’ is lying, cheating and sleeping his way around London. Which means I definitely deserve a refund.

Unfortunately, moving on isn’t that simple. Just because I know how to operate on a heart doesn’t mean I know how to fix my broken one. Plus, I lost the receipt for him years ago so I’m definitely getting short changed.

1) The last time I went on a date double denim was in fashion and my eyebrows were horrendously overplucked.
2) Men wear stupidly skinny jeans now.
3) I don’t know how to use dating apps but at least I don’t have to get changed out of my pyjamas.
4) Sometimes the most promising thing you have in common with a guy is a shared love of prawns.
5) I don’t know whether to open a date with ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ or ‘hey’ and once I ended up saying ‘howdy’.

Everything happens for a reason, they say. There’s plenty more fish in the sea. But what happens when everything falls apart and you haven’t got a clue how to go fishing?

An absolutely hilarious and utterly relatable tale for anyone who has ever survived a nightmare relationship, felt a little lonely or nursed a broken heart with wine and carbs. This feel-good novel will get you back on your feet and genuinely laughing out loud. Perfect for fans of Why Mummy Drinks, Sophie Ranald and Sophie Kinsella.

I Know You Lied by Leslie Sanderson **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy hump day!

How would you feel if you found out your entire life was a lie? This was a compelling story about family secrets and lies.

My Thoughts

Got a secret, can you keep it? Leslie Sanderson has crafted a dark family drama brimming with secrets and lies. Imagine that for 30 years you have thought your mother died in a car accident when you were young. Raised by your grandmother you have lived a pretty darn good life. Then out of the blue you receive a letter from a solicitor informing you that your mother has just recently passed away. What? That is the situation that Nell finds herself in. Hurt and confused Nell is determined to find out the truth. Where has her mother been for the past 30 years and why was she told she was dead?

Told in alternating perspectives the story bounces between Nell and her mother Sarah, the present and the past. This was much more of a family drama than a thriller. A deep dive into this family’s psyche. Nell was a sympathetic character, I really felt for her and could not imagine being in her situation. The story was a bit of a slow burn, but I really did enjoy the journey. Well told, although a little predictable.

Lesley attended the Curtis Brown Creative 6 month novel writing course in 2015/6, and in 2017 The Orchid Girls (then On The Edge) was shortlisted for the Lucy Cavendish fiction prize.

Lesley is the author of psychological thrillers and spends her days writing in coffee shops in Kings Cross where she lives and works as a librarian. She loves the atmosphere and eclectic mix of people in the area. Lesley discovered Patricia Highsmith as a teenager and has been hooked on psychological thrillers ever since.

My Thoughts

A sweet and scrumptious romance. Katie Ginger has written a charming story packed with delightful characters. Hetty is a lively event planner determined to revamp Swallowtail Bay’s annual strawberry festival. Part of the event planning involves her trying to convince be somewhat reclusive John Thornhill to allow the event to be held on his property. What follows is a sweet story with some complications. I loved watching Hetty and John‘s relationship bloom. It was so fun watching them plan the strawberry festival. I wanted to be right there with them, especially when it came to the food tasting. Hetty was such a fun vivacious character her bubbly personality and energy dripped from the pages. John really was her perfect match. The blurb made me think there was going to be more of a love triangle, but I was very grateful there really wasn’t. So grab your beach towel, your sunscreen, settle in on that lounge chair and relax with this book. And don’t forget the strawberries!

My Thoughts

Fast paced, tense, and addictive. David Bell writes stories that completely suck me in, have me feeling anxious, and on the edge of my seat. Ryan and Amanda appear to have the perfect life. A Beautiful home, an adorable baby, and a happy marriage. BUT Ryan has a dark secret he’s been hiding for years. AND he is being blackmailed by not only one but two people to keep it. All this subterfuge leads to Ryan Breaking into a woman’s house to retrieve letters instead finding her dead body and then discovering that he knows the murder victim. To make everything even more complicated and chilling as he looks down at the women’s dead body he receives a Facebook friend request from her on his phone. Of course I reach this point of the book just as I think I’m about to go to sleep… didn’t happen. There were so many pulse pounding moments in this book as Ryan gets himself into one sticky situation after another. Ryan is a likable kind family Man who you really do want things to work out for. Ryan however seems to lack any common sense throughout the story. This is a book that will make you look over your shoulder the next time you’re walking down the street and think twice the next time before you post something on Facebook. A compulsive story with a satisfying end.
