CHAPTER 1

The shift seemed to have gone on forever. Lea put the clipboard on the front desk and stretched, a hand on her back. She winced as her sternum cracked.

Why was she so tired? She should be used to being on her feet for twelve hours. But today her lower back hurt, her feet ached and she just wanted to crawl into bed.

Her cell buzzed. The sound still startled her. She wasn’t used to having her phone during work. But now that Ricco was in her life, and his availability was unpredictable, she’d started carrying it during shifts.

This shift was as good as over, so Lea allowed herself to peek at the screen. It was a text message from Ricco, and her heart beat faster.

Hey baby girl, how’s work? U got 10 mins, can I call u? X

Lea frowned. In the last couple of weeks he’d started calling her baby girl, especially if he had bad news. Still, a message from him gave her butterflies. And it was unlikely that his news were migraine-related, or he would’ve called, no matter what she was doing.

She wrote back, Just finishing handover. Will call you in 15 mins. x

Lea took care not to let her mind wander while she gave the day shift instructions. Only when she was confident that she had delivered a good handover did she hurry into the junior doctor’s changing rooms.

Ricco answered on the first ring. “Morning, doc.”

“Morning,” she said. “You’re up early. It’s five am.”

“Couldn’t sleep, there’s too much to do.”

“Don’t give yourself another migraine over it,” she admonished.

“Good point.” He sighed. “Listen, babe. Some stuff’s come up. Travel show shit, someone fucked up and we gotta smooth things out before we can move ahead.”

This sounded ominous. Lea’s heart fell. “If it’s not convenient for me to come to Ottawa tomorrow, don’t worry about it,” she said, even though it was hard not to show her disappointment. “We’ll do it another time.”

There came another sigh. “I hate this, y’know,” he said. “I want you here so much. Finally show you the place.”

“Hey, they’re not gonna ban foreigners from visiting Canada anytime soon, are they?” she joked. “I’ll come next time you’ve got a few days to spare, don’t worry.”

“You’re the best,” he said in a quiet voice, sounding relieved.

“I know I am.” She had to make light, it wouldn’t help if he was upset. “Wouldn’t be much fun sitting in your house while you get drunk with suits.”

“Ha-ha.” His laugh was subdued, but at least it was a laugh.

“Listen, I’m really tired,” she said. “And I still have to drive home. Call me tonight?”

“Will do, babe. Drive safe, and get some real sleep, okay?”

“Hark who’s talking,” she sighed. “Have a good day, darling.”

“Speak later.”

“Bye.” Lea thumbed the phone off, disappointment bubbling inside her. She hadn’t wanted to make him feel bad, so she had kept a lid on it, but the thought of going to Ottawa had sustained her all week.

It had only been two weeks since the jazz club. A few days together without distraction was what they needed to see where things would be going from here. They both wanted things to work, but if they couldn’t spend any time together, that would be difficult.

But there was nothing to be done just now. Lea yawned, and changed into her street clothes. She had to get to bed, she was beat.

When she emerged from the changing room ten minutes later she noticed several of her colleagues staring at her. What was going on? Had she – her heart lurched – left the changing room without putting her jeans on? She looked down to check. Well, it wasn’t that, thank goodness. Kathy, her favorite nurse, beckoned her over to reception. A long, white box sat atop the counter.

“You got an admirer, Dr. Holm?” asked one of the day shift nurses and giggled.

“What do you mean?” Lea stared at her, then at the box, dread forming in her gut.

Kathy pointed at the box. “It’s addressed to you. Open it!”

Confused, Lea did so without thinking. When the lid came off she gasped, along with the nurses.

A dozen long-stemmed red roses nestled in white tulle paper, looking more expensive than any present Lea had ever gotten. Dazed, she picked up a small, gold-embossed card.

Sorry doc… x Before anyone could peek at it, Lea slipped it into her pocket.

“Who are they from?” The day nurse’s voice was hushed.

“No idea,” Lea lied. “No name on the card. Excuse me.” She snatched up the box, lid on akimbo, and hurried away without another word.

When she got to her car she bundled herself in and dumped the box onto the passenger seat. Then she sat there, out of breath from fleeing at high speed. After a minute she lifted the crumpled lid an inch. The red petals glinted through the gap. Lea snatched her hand away as if scalded.

That had been a real shock. Sure, Ricco was sweet and thoughtful, and he was sorry that they wouldn’t see each other this weekend. But why this grand gesture? They’d already talked on the phone, and he’d apologized. And why send the flowers to her workplace? Did he want everyone to know about the two of them? Maybe he did. They hadn’t discussed it. The possibility made her heart race.

Or was this another case of Ricco thinking he had to mollify her with an expensive gift? That she expected something like this?

Her phone buzzed. Lea flinched. It was another text from Ricco. U got them yet? They okay? Do u like them? Is it too much? X

Lea smiled. He was sweet, that silly doofus. And he seemed as much at sea with their thing as she was. She typed a reply. They’re quite something. My colleagues were impressed!

His response came within seconds. Too much, I knew it! Damn… I’m sorry?

Guilt churned in her gut. Sure, the roses were overkill, but he shouldn’t feel bad. Course not. I love them. Speak later, okay? x

Okay. I’ll call u. Sleep well! X

Shaking her head Lea put the phone away. It would take a while for him to believe that she didn’t need grand gestures. And she had to work on not freaking out about a gift. She glanced in the box again. The roses were exquisite.

Shame she had no vase for them, never mind a suitably grand place to put them on display.

Have a peaceful day and stay safe! XOXO Berit☮️

Her relationship with Jake was so sweet, the love between them really poured from the pages. The backstory of her birth mother Emily was heartbreaking I really felt for the girl. All the secondary characters in this book were spectacular and I have to give a special shout out to Gwen and Clover who I particularly loved. A lovely beach read with a whole lot of heart!

Sister Dear by Hannah Mary McKinnon **Book Review** @harlequinbooks @harperaudio

Happy Thursday all!

Do you like women’s fiction and thrillers? This book does a good job of blending the two genres!

My Thoughts

Women’s fiction with a twisted thriller ending. Eleanor has never had a good relationship with her mother or her sister, thank goodness her father has always been there for her. But when she learns on her father’s deathbed that he is not her biological father she is devastated. When she reaches out to her biological father he also rejects her. Eleanor is now furious and ready to seek revenge. She masterminds a plan to befriend her half sister Victoria and ultimately destroy her. The thing is she likes Victoria and soon the girls form a strong friendship, but what will happen when Eleanor tells Victoria the truth? This part of the story was engaging and I liked that these girls had formed a friendship especially because technically they were half-sisters. Elinor also started a romance with her neighbor Louise who was such a good guy, but Elinor had a lot of insecurities that she still needed to work through that messed with the relationship. Sounds like a complicated domestic drama, doesn’t it? Well not so fast… at about 75% things start to hit the fan, and I started to second-guess everybody’s intentions. The end of this book was fraught with tension as everything started spinning out of control.

This was an entertaining story, but I think it would have been stronger had I been more sympathetic towards Eleanor. I did understand that she had suffered quite a bit from the way her mother had treated her. Her inner dialogues and self loathing were depressing. However she really thrived on playing the victim and didn’t necessarily want to take any responsibility for her own life. The audiobook is narrated by Lauren Ezzo Who did an incredible job. I do think I enjoyed this book even more because the narration was really well done as always by Lauren. This was a good book with a few issues just like its main character.

About the Book

Everything is slipping through Eleanor Hardwicke’s fingers. When her beloved father dies, her world is further shattered by a gut-wrenching secret: the man she’s grieving isn’t really her dad. Eleanor was the product of an affair and her biological father is still out there, living blissfully with the family he chose. With her personal life spiraling, a desperate Eleanor seeks him out, leading her to uncover another branch on her family tree—an infuriatingly enviable half sister.

Perfectly perfect Victoria has everything Eleanor could ever dream of. Loving childhood, luxury home, devoted husband. All of it stolen from Eleanor, who deserves it just as much. Now she plans to take it back. After all, good sisters are supposed to share. And quiet, docile little Eleanor has been waiting far too long for her turn to play.

Have a lovely day! XOXO Berit🤍

My Review

Welcome to the book that makes you feel that you have it Allllllll worked out!!

Oh Yes!! There I was reading this shouting at the book (as I do) “IT’S THIS PERSON, I KNOW IT IS, CASE CLOSED!”

Turns out I might have been wrong, all of my smugness took a huge turn when BAM, in comes a twist, and I thought, Hmm didn’t see that coming, and then BAM, in comes another one, and to top it off BAM here’s another one to add to the pile.

So, I don’t feel so smug anymore, as I had no idea LOL

This is a difficult one to review as I don’t want to add any unintentional spoilers, so all you need to know is this:

Anna is a newsreader
Jack is a DCI
Jack and Anna were married
Jack and Anna are now divorced
A murder brings them both together again
One of them could be involved
One of them could be lying
Secrets and lies a-plenty

If you love a twisty thriller that will keep you on your toes, and your head spinning, this is the one for you.

Enjoy
Vicci 📚💛✨

**Thank you to HQstories, Netgalley, and the Author for a copy of the book**

JUST MY LUCK BTB

About the Book

A Cornish Summer Holiday at the Little Duck Pond Café

The Little Duck Pond Cafe girls are looking forward to a well-earned break in the Cornish seaside town of Pengully Sands, where Sylvia’s sister, Aggie, owns a holiday home. With the glorious golden sands, sparkling azure sea and an ice-cream parlour only yards away, it seems like the perfect location to relax and watch the surfers riding the waves (and maybe even have a go themselves). But when they arrive, the girls find it’s not quite the seaside idyll they were expecting. The house is less ‘holiday home’ and more ‘creepy, dilapidated haunted house.’ Gracie, who runs the ice-cream parlour, has problems of her own and the last thing she needs is a bunch of high-spirited girls arriving to disturb the peace and isolation she craves. And when a handsome stranger looks set to destroy her livelihood, it seems like the last straw. Will Gracie get her happy ending – and maybe even make friends with the girls next-door? This wasn’t the relaxing break the Little Duck Pond Cafe girls were expecting, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be the holiday of a lifetime!

Rosie has been scribbling stories ever since she was little.

Back then, they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’.

Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all – unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Her series of novellas is centred around life in a village cafe. The latest, ‘Lemon Drizzle Mondays at the Little Duck Pond Cafe’, is out now.

Rosie is currently writing a full-length book, ‘Lucy’s Great Cornish Escape’, which – in a fun twist – will feature favourite characters from the Little Duck Pond Café series.

Time Out by Emma Murray **Book Review** @rararesources @boldwoodbooks

Happy Wednesday all!

This was such a fun and authentic story about the good, the bad, and the ugly of motherhood!💁🏻‍♀️

My Thoughts

A hilarious and authentic look at motherhood, the good, the bad, the ugly. Emma Murray has infused this delightful story with loads of wit, whimsy, and humor. As a mother of three adult children (almost) I appreciated this realistic dive into the most remarkable yet most challenging job I’ve ever had. Saoirs is a stressed out sleep deprived mother to precocious four-year-old Anna. Her controlling neat freak husband David has been growing distant. Saoirs has been working as a ghost writer for business publications so when her agent reaches out to see if she would be interested in writing a book about motherhood she is thrown off. How can she possibly write a book about the joys of being a mother when it is a constant struggle. Completely overwhelmed Saoirs is in need of a TIME OUT. Tantruming toddlers, judgmental mommies, hostile teachers, supportive friends, cheating husband, arctic swimming, disturbing dreams, repaired relationships.

This was so fun! I loved Saoirs and would have loved to be one of her mommy friends. The pretentious “organic” mommies were hilarious. I remember being a new mother and so worried I was doing everything wrong and absolutely convinced everyone else was doing everything right. I never made any homemade baby food, never used cloth diapers, breast-feeding was not for me, gave my kids Cheerios, let them watch television…. and you know what? My kids are thriving! I really appreciated the realism in the story and it brought back so many memories both good and bad.

About the Book

Time Out

‘It’s just a phase,’ they said. ‘These are the happiest years of your life,’ they said…

Mother of one and professional writer Saoirse (pronounced Seersha, not Searcy – thanks a bunch Game of Thrones!) is still adjusting to the demands of motherhood, four years after the birth of her daughter, Anna.

Living in the claustrophobic London suburb of Woodvale, and being surrounded by passive-aggressive mum-wars, isn’t helping. Neither is her increasingly pent-up anger at her once-perfect husband. Her only comrade in arms, best friend Bea, is the one thing keeping her sane.

When Saoirse’s agent asks her to pitch for a book, she is horrified to discover the topic is motherhood. How can she possibly write a ‘warts and all’ account of being a mother without giving away what it’s really like?

Laugh-out-loud funny, painfully well-observed, but with an unmistakable warmth and unforgettable characters, this is the perfect antidote to all those parenting bibles that bear absolutely no relation to real life. The novel may or may not have been inspired by real life…

Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday!

Excited to share with you today my review for this sweet cozy romance! This is the second book in this delightful series that I am thoroughly enjoying!🌸

My Thoughts

Romance, family, heart, and hope. Denise Hunter has written another Sweet cozy romance that made me smile. This is the second book in this delightful series and although it can absolutely be read as a standalone I would encourage you to read the previous book as well. Levi and his siblings are Busy running their family inn. Although Levi has not been completely upfront with his sisters the inn isn’t doing quite as well as he has led them to believe. But Levi is determined to honor his fathers dying words to take care of his sisters. Mia is a big-time movie star whose life is starting to fall apart. Her engagement has been called off and her name is now being drug through the tabloids. She needs a little getaway and why not take her honeymoon trip to that quaint North Carolina town by herself? It has already been paid for. Mia also has familial ties to Levi’s family inn. When Levi and Mia meet there is a instant spark that slowly ignites as the two get to know one another better. But what could this small town innkeeper and movie star possibly have in common?

I sure do love a well told small town romance. Levi and Mia were both likable characters and I really loved watching their relationship develope. I also loved Levi’s relationship with his sisters Molly and Grace. Molly was the focus of the previous book and I liked seeing her relationship continue in a positive direction. There is also the addition of a little family mystery in this book that was lots of fun. Another wonderful installment in this series excited to see what’s in store for Grace.

Excerpt

An extract from the book manuscript.

Context: A routine test flight of space plane Celeste Two, predecessor of Celeste Three.

“All done?” Test pilot Matthew Wallace glanced over his shoulder at his colleague, first officer Richard Palfrey, on a test flight of the prototype space plane Celeste Two. Palfrey had been carrying out the pre-descent checks.

“Uh-huh. Just gimme a sec.” He scanned his instrument display panel again. “Yep, all good. I’m telling you, this is one sweet aircraft.”

“So far, but this is only her third flight. Better than Celeste One. I like the extra power but you can’t make a judgment yet. How far to re-entry engine burn?”

“About three minutes. Time to cross-check with FCC.” He was referring to the Flight Control Centre at their base in Benson Flats, Arizona.

In the captain’s seat Wallace sat up suddenly. The instrument panel displays had just switched off. “What the hell…?”

Palfrey reacted immediately, flicking the switch to open the communication channel to the control centre. “FCC, Celeste. There’s a problem, all displays are out,” he said crisply.

In the flight control centre director Gus Mead had been relaxed, watching over the routine test flight when the call startled him. Did he hear right? His stomach knotted as he jabbed at the send button, his words sharp and clear.

“Celeste, FCC. Say again, please, we do not copy. Repeat, we do not copy.”

The reply came from the usually laconic captain Matt Wallace.

“Matt here, Gus. I say again, we have no telemetry. The screen is blank.” In the background the voice of Rich Palfrey could be heard swearing as he tried desperately to resuscitate the dead display.

Mead immediately turned to Robin Stevens, another of the test pilots who was on monitoring duty in the control room.

“Any suggestions, Robbie?”

Stevens looked horrified. “Blank display? Shit, I thought they’d fixed that. Right now Celeste’s on the primary glide path, too close to re-entry burn.”

“Oh, God,” Mead muttered. He took a deep breath and pressed the send button.

“We’re on it, Celeste. We got you on GPS, we can count you down to the burn. What have you tried?”

“Everything. Gus, we gotta have attitude info. The screen is blank.”

Mead was staring at one of the three monitors. He turned to Stevens. “Get on to Pickard, right now. I want options, fast.”

Stevens grabbed his intercom to call the systems and electronics expert as Mead pressed the send button again.

“Copy that, Celeste. We’re checking with Pickard.”

“Too late for that. Count us down, I’ll give it my best shot. We don’t want to go exploring space just now.”

Mead’s heart was pounding. He knew that the only alternative was an attempt at re-entry, with Wallace relying on his experience and skill to get the entry attitude exactly right. Chances were not good. His mouth went dry as he made the effort to stay calm.

“You are precisely one hundred fifteen seconds to engine burn, Matt. Keep trying, here we go.”

With the room now silent and all present watching, Mead started the countdown. He kept his eyes fixed on the monitors as the seconds drained away.

“…..fifteen, fourteen, thirteen…”

From Celeste, Wallace cut in. “See you guys later.”

“…five, four, three, two, one, ignition.”

The tense silence of the control centre was shattered by the familiar roar of the engine’s blast, confirming that the burn was working and for a few heart-stopping moments all seemed well. Four seconds later it ceased, abruptly. Instantly Mead reached out and stabbed at the intercom.

“Celeste? Come in, Celeste. FCC to Celeste, come in.” The director’s voice cracked, his anxiety increasing. “Come in, Celeste. Matt, come in, dammit.”

There was no response. With his staff watching in complete silence, Gus Mead’s face reflected the horror they felt. He sank into his chair and put his head in his hands.

Have a lovely day! XOXO Berit🌸

The Plus One Pact by

Happy Sunday all!

Enjoying a nice long relaxing weekend! This book you guys was such a wonderful romcom I just love spending time with these characters.💕💕

The Plus One Pact

What if your plus one could be the one…?

Cara has officially run out of men. Her most recent dates have gone from bad to worse, and when her dating app informs her there is no one left in her area to choose from, she is at a dead end.

But with a summer of events ahead of her, she needs to find a solution, fast; someone to keep her company at the never-ending weddings, family gatherings and gender reveal parties that she can’t face going to alone.

So when she meets handsome, confident, Millsy on a night out she may be in luck. They could not be more different in personality, but he too has a summer of events ahead and is desperate to get his family off his back about finding a ‘nice girl’. What if they made a pact to help each other out and be a plus one for the summer? Just as friends of course…?

A brand new romantic comedy from bestseller Portia MacIntosh, perfect for fans of Zara Stoneley, Sophie Ranald and Mhairi McFarlane.

My thoughts

Witty and sweet. Portia MacIntosh has written such a fun lighthearted feel good book! The fake relationship trope is one of my favorites and this is one of the best I’ve read. Cara and Millsy meet one night at a bar when Millsy approaches Cara after she’s been stood up. Cara has gone on a recent string of bad dates and is convinced there is nobody that she matches with who is also geographically desirable and Millsy doesn’t do relationships. The two of them form an unlikely bond and soon decide that they are going to be one another’s plus one for the summer. Both of them have countless family obligations, including Cara’s bitchy cousin’s wedding where her ex-boyfriend is on the guest list. The story was not terribly unpredictable, but that did not matter at all because the journey was divine.

Cara and Millsy were both such tremendously likable characters and I cannot remember the last time I was so anxious for a couple to realize the feelings they have for one another. They also both had great families filled with fabulously colorful characters that I loved getting to know. I really just enjoyed every minute I spent reading this book and was sad to see it end. I would love to see a follow up to the story perhaps a book with Oliver, Cara’s feminist Brother. This book was definitely one of the best romcoms I’ve read this year.

Little Whispers by K L Slater **Book Review** @bookouture

Happy Saturday y’all!

It is memorial day weekend here in the US. California is still locked down so no big plans but might have a little barbecue with my son Saturday or Sunday?🍉

My Thoughts

Glamour, manipulation, blackmail, lies. K L Slater has written a captivating and entertaining twisted domestic thriller. Janey and her family have moved to a new upscale town into a gorgeous home. At first she gets a cold vibe from the neighborhood moms. So when Tonya start reaching out to Janey she is more than eager. Now Janey is one of the cool kids play dates, shopping trips, mom’s nights out. Then one night after several glasses of wine Janey spills a big dark secret. But she can trust her new Besties, can’t she? And this is only half of it Jney’s husband Isaac has also been acting very strange. Perhaps this move, was a bad idea?

This was an entertaining fast-paced domestic thriller. I was furiously turning the pages, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I completely did not fault Janey for embracing these new “friendships“ but I just knew it would be her downfall. What I did not see coming was the end to this book. It wasn’t mine blowing or crazy, but it was definitely surprising. Another engaging and addictive read from Miss Slater.
