The Vineyards of Champagne by Juliet Blackwell @berkleypub #bookreview

Happy Thursday all!

This was such a great book! The Champagne region of France during WWI told through old letters.🥖

My Thoughts

WWI France…. A beautiful story about a tragic time. Juliet Blackwell has brilliantly told the story of the Champagne region of France through old letters. Old letters that told the story of the women and children of France living underneath the champagne houses in miles and miles of caves. Entire towns were moved underground homes, shops, bakeries, schools, animals, and of course the people. The only time they came out was to pick the grapes. I was completely fascinated by this part of history I did not previously know, and so was Rosalyn. Rosalyn meets Emma on a plane from San Francisco to Paris. Emma is Australian and traveling to the region to search for more letters and further piece together the story of one of her relatives who was in France during WWI. Rosalyn has recently suffered a loss and is headed reluctantly to France for her work as a wine rep. When Emma offers her an opportunity to help with the researching and translating of these letters, Rosalyn is very tempted. What follows is a beautiful story about friendship, forgiveness, acceptance, Romance, history, Mystery, second chances, and love.

This was a contemporary story with history woven in through these letters. I think this would be a great book for someone new to historical fiction, but it will also resonate with the historical fiction lover. Rosalyn is a sympathetic character and I loved how much her character grew throughout the story. I loved The friendships she made and how she learned to trust and open her heart again. The descriptive writing really gave me an authentic feel for France. I have to say I love the fact that the French people embrace the carbs, I was craving bread throughout this entire book. A lovely story that taught me something I did not previously no.

About the Book

Beneath the cover of France’s most exquisite vineyards, a city of women defy an army during World War I, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Carousel of Provence….

Deep within the labyrinth of caves that lies below the lush, rolling vineyards of the Champagne region, an underground city of women and children hums with life. Forced to take shelter from the unrelenting onslaught of German shellfire above, the bravest and most defiant women venture out to pluck sweet grapes for the harvest. But wine is not the only secret preserved in the cool, dark cellars…

In present day, Rosalyn Acosta travels to Champagne to select vintages for her Napa-based employer. Rosalyn doesn’t much care for champagne–or France, for that matter. Since the untimely death of her young husband, Rosalyn finds it a challenge to enjoy anything at all. But as she reads through a precious cache of WWI letters and retraces the lives lived in the limestone tunnels, Rosalyn will unravel a mystery hidden for decades…and find a way to savor her own life again. The Last Sister by Kendra Eliot @amazonpub @kendraelliot #bookreview #thelastsister

Happy Wednesday all!

Super excited to share with you today my review for this wonderful crime thriller! The first book in a brand new series by Kendra Elliot.

My Thoughts

This was such a compelling crime thriller. This is the first book in Kendra Elliot’s new Columbia River series. Mystery, history, romance, sisters, small town, racism, Family secrets, zany aunts. Emily is shook to the core when she finds her friend’s dead body stabbed multiple times and her husband dead as well hung from a tree. The first thought is that this is a murder suicide, but Emily is not convinced. This is too similar to a prior murder in this small town years ago when Emily‘s father had been killed by hanging. Her father‘s murder also led to her mother’s suicide and her older sister’s disappearance. This brutal murder brings in the FBI and agent Zander Wells. What follows is a fast paced cleverly plotted investigation into the murders both in the present and the past. The investigation also brings together Zander and Emily.

This book was much more Mystery than romance in fact I’d be hesitant to call it romantic suspense. There is an obvious attraction between Zander and Emily although it is not acted on, much. I had no problem with this because I was completely invested in this mystery. I love the big old house that Emily and her sister Madison lived in with there great aunts. I was intrigued by the past. Why was their father killed? And where was their sister? I also was extremely fascinated by the history of Oregon, I truly had no idea Oregon had such a dark history. I loved playing detective and trying to puzzle this together with Zander and Emily. And even though there was very little romance in the story I am really hoping that there will be a little more in the next book and it will continue the story of Zander and Emily, I really like these two together.

About the Book

Three sisters’ secrets collide in a shocking novel of suspense by the Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author of the Mercy Kilpatrick series.

Twenty years ago Emily Mills’s father was murdered, and she found his body hanging in the backyard. Her younger sister, Madison, claims she was asleep in her room. Her older sister, Tara, claims she was out with friends. The tragedy drove their mother to suicide and Tara to leave town forever. The killer was caught. The case closed.

Ever since, Emily and Madison have tried to forget what happened that night – until an eerily similar murder brings it all back. It also brings FBI special agent Zander Wells to the Oregon logging town. As eager as he is to solve the brutal double slaying, he is just as intrigued with the mystery of Emily’s and her sisters’ past.

When more blood is shed, Zander suspects there’s a secret buried in this town no one wants unearthed. Is it something Emily and Madison don’t know? Or aren’t telling? And Tara? Maybe Emily can’t bear to find her. Because when Tara disappeared, she took a secret of her own with her.

The Cottage on Wildflower Lane by Liz Davies @rararesources #coverreveal

Happy Wednesday all!

So excited to share with you today this gorgeous cover for a book that I am so excited to read!💐

The Cottage on Wildflower Lane

Esther’s life isn’t perfect (whose is?) – but she’s happy enough living in her little flat with her boyfriend, Josh.

But that’s about to change.

Bored out of her mind in work, she wishes that something, anything, would happen to liven her life up.

Unfortunately, her wish comes true when Josh calls her from the airport to tell her he’s going to work in a bar in Spain, and she’s not invited, Esther is devastated, and her unhappiness is compounded when she discovers she can actually view the bar via a webcam link and watch him chatting up other girls.

But when she inadvertently clicks on a link to another webcam which shows a pretty cottage and the rather hunky man who lives in it, her interest is piqued and she wishes she could get to know him.

Wishes don’t really come true, though – do they…?

Pre-order links

Publication Date: 14th February

Author Bio –

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.

She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.

She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper can and travel the world in it.

The Stranger’s Wife by Anna Lou Weatherley @annaloulondon @bookouture #bookreview

Happy Sunday all!

Excited to share with you today my review for this fab book from a fab series. I keep saying I’m not going to get caught up in any more series and somehow I keep getting hooked!🚄

My Thoughts

A Fait Accompli

Anna Lou Weatherley brilliantly weaves together a psychological thriller and a police procedural. A tense page turner filled with well developed characters and a riveting storyline. This is the third book in the Detective Dan Riley series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Two women from completely different backgrounds. Beth lives in a wealthy neighborhood with her adorable daughter Lily and her distant and deranged husband Evan. Cath’s circumstances are quite different, she lives in a run down neighborhood with an abusive addict as her partner. When the women’s paths cross one day on the 3:15 train it seems as though it is faded. What follows is a compelling story of revenge and deceit.

I loved watching Beth and Cath tangle themselves up in this tale. I also loved watching Dan try to untangle the tale. Dan is such a great character, and in all the books it has been remarked on that he has very “kind eyes“. I also love how his personal life is infused into the story. There was a lot of gray area in this book, the path to justice was not clear-cut. And as much as I wanted Dan to solve the case, I also did not want him to. Complicated, captivating, addictive, tents. A riveting read with a satisfying ending.

About the Book

Beth and Cath are leaving their husbands.

This is a story about two very different women.

One is wealthy and having an affair with a man who gives her the kind of love that her cold, detached husband does not.

One is living hand to mouth, suffering at the hands of a violent partner who would rather see her dead than leave him.

You may think you know these women already and how their lives will unfold.

Beth will live happily ever after with her little girl and her soulmate.

Cath will go back to her abusive husband.

And these two women will never cross paths.

But you will be wrong.

On the 3.15pm train from London to Bristol, Beth and Cath are about to meet and discover they share one shocking thing in common.

A clever, engrossing and absolutely unputdownable page-turner of a read about what really lies beneath the surface of a marriage. Fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train will be hooked on The Stranger’s Wife.

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray @berkleypub #bookreview #paperbackrelease

Happy weekend bibliophiles!

Today I am resharing my review for this impactful and emotional book now available in paperback💕

My Thoughts

<

Wow! This book was thick with dysfunction, grief, guilt, and love!

When I finish this book I did not know what to think, I was emotionally exhausted and I needed to let this book simmer for a while. I needed to process the pain and the emotion I had just experienced. Anissa Gray has written one heck of a dark evocative and emotional debut! This book was so real, so raw, so uncomfortable, and yet so exquisite! It was a book I needed to take a few steps away from to truly appreciate, I needed to separate myself from these characters to find the true beauty in these words.

The Butler family truly brings dysfunction to new heights. Every time I turned a page in this book I was drawn further into this family’s misfortune and pain. Not going to lie the darkness was a bit overwhelming for me at times and I think that is why I needed this book to sit with me before I could truly appreciate it. This is the story of sisters Althea, viola, and Lillian. Althea who became the matriarch of the family after the sister’s mother passed is in trouble. Althea and her husband Proctor have been found guilty of embezzlement a crime that the sisters and the entire community are shocked by. Viola and Lillian rally to take care of Altheas twin girls Kim and baby Vi. This was one complicated story with multiple layers and many secrets. A Family broken trying to come together and pick up the pieces.

All these characters were flawed and not necessarily likable, but they sure were real. Althea was very difficult for me to understand as a mother, but I did like how as the story went along we got to see a softer side of her (sort of). Lillian and viola were really so full of love and yet so broken. During the course of the story they really found their strength and voice, it gave me hope for a better healthier future for these ladies. Their brother Joe on the other hand…

A powerful debut packed with emotion sorrow and hope! Absolutely recommend!

🎵🎵🎵 Song Running Through My Head

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were, but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today
Ooh, ooh
I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you’ve done
Forgive all your mistakes
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I wanna call you
But I know you won’t be there
Ohh I’m sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn’t do
And I’ve hurt myself by hurting you
Some days I feel broke inside but I won’t admit
Sometimes I just wanna hide ’cause it’s you I miss
And it’s so hard to say goodbye
When it comes to this
Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do
To have…

*** many thanks to Berkley for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

in this dazzling debut novel about mothers and daughters, identity and family, and how the relationships that sustain you can also be the ones that consume you.

The Butler family has had their share of trials—as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest—but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives.

Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, is a force to be reckoned with and her younger sisters have alternately appreciated and chafed at her strong will. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when she and her husband Proctor are arrested, and in a heartbeat the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace. The worst part is, not even her sisters are sure exactly what happened.

As Althea awaits her fate, Lillian and Viola must come together in the house they grew up in to care for their sister’s teenage daughters. What unfolds is a stunning portrait of the heart and core of an American family in a story that is as page-turning as it is important.

Getting a degree in engineering, followed by a career in accountancy is probably not a conventional path to becoming an author, particularly in fantasy or romance. Rachel says that, although accountancy isn’t anything like as boring as everyone thinks, writing is a lot more fun. When not writing, she can be found walking in the beautiful countryside near where she lives, which has influenced much of the scenery in her books, or shooting things with her local archery club. Shooting targets only, honest. Nothing to worry about. (Okay, sometimes we shoot Polo mints. Or cabbages. Still nothing to worry about.)

The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell @botbspublicity @caroline_writes @amazonpub #bookreview

Happy Friday all!

Wow! This book you all was so good! A wild and crazy ride a thriller that made an impression!🚨

My Thoughts

Well HOT damn! This was a WILD RIDE! Caroline mitchell has twisted the twisted! A deliciously disturbing page turner that completely sucked me in. Roz is in her early 20s a little uncertain of what she wants from her future when she finds herself pregnant. The one thing she knows is nobody can find out who the father is and that she is not ready to raise a baby. Roz signs up to an elite adoption service and soon fines that a rich famous “diamond“ couple is interested in her baby. Convinced that she has hit the jackpot Roz soon finds herself jetting off to New York leaving Ireland behind. When she gets to New York she finds out the couple interested in her baby is the most popular movie star couple of the moment. But as soon as she gets to the couple’s house and signs the nondisclosure things start getting a bit strange. First of all she is living in a basement apartment where the only access is an elevator, to which she does not have the pass key. No phone, no Internet, no way out, completely cut off from the outside world. And to make things even more creepy Roz is pretty certain that somebody has previously worn the maternity clothes they gave her, and who is leaving these newspaper and magazine articles for her to read?

Yikes! The story bounces between the perspectives of Roz and adopting mother Sheridon. Roz really could be any of us a little naïve, but really just wanting the best for her baby. Sheridon on the other hand is a psychotic controlling bitch. And as the book goes on she becomes more psycho, more controlling, and even more of a bitch. The only hope I had for Roz was husband Daniel. I was not certain what side Daniel was on and if he had any idea about his wife’s behavior. There were some pretty crazy twist in the story, plenty of things I did not see coming. Fast-paced, addictive, twisted, disturbing, dark, mind blowing. This was a thriller that made an impression!

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord @stmartinspress #bookreview

Happy almost weekend!

This book comes out next Tuesday and it is SO ADORABLE! A fun book that will make you smile!🍔

My Thoughts

This was such a fun sweet lighthearted romcom! Emma Lord has written a delightful debut that put a big smile on my face. Twitter wars, secret apps, teenage angst, swim team, water polo, grilled cheese, secret recipes, macaroons, expectations, friendship, romance, family, sibling rivalry, cheeseburgers. Pepper is a straight A high school student, captain of the swim team with her eye on the future. She also finds herself managing her parents restaurant chain’s social media accounts. Jack is a good guy techie who seems to always find himself in his twin brother’s shadow. He also is burdened with the responsibility of taking over the family diner one day. When Pepper’s family’s restaurant chain appears to have stolen the secret grilled cheese recipe of Jack’s family diner a Twitter war ensues. The teens attend the same school and have recently started a friendship, neither of them knowing of the others involvement on Twitter. Additionally they have also established a deeper connection on an app that Jack created for the high school where everyone’s identity is anonymous. So what happens when you find out the person that you’re falling for is also the person that you hate?

Loved the story! Both Pepper and Jack were such great characters. There was also a little more depth to this story than some other romcoms. The story really touched on family responsibilities and expectations. There was also lots of yummy food! I found myself craving grilled cheese and macaroons. Two Great kids in an awkward uncomfortable situation with a couple extra fun twists along the way. Fun, fun, fun, absolutely recommend when you are in the mood for a heart warming story! With a side of fries.

About the Book

A fresh, irresistible rom-com from debut author Emma Lord about the chances we take, the paths life can lead us on, and how love can be found in the opposite place you expected.

Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming – mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.

Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.

All’s fair in love and cheese – that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life – on an anonymous chat app Jack built.

As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate – people on the internet are shipping them?? – their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.

Praise for Tweet Cute:

The Hollows by Jess Montgomery @tlcbooktours @minotaurbooks #bookreview

Happy Thursday all!

Delighted to share this compelling story with you today! This was a book that I definitely liked more than I was anticipating, and isn’t that always the best?🗝

My Thoughts

The perfect blend of history and Mystery this is the second book in Jess Montgomery’s Kinship series based on The real first female sheriff of Ohio. While I thought this worked just fine as a standalone, I also would have liked a little more of the characters backstory that I am sure is given in the first book. 1926 Ohio Lily is called to the scene of an elderly woman having dropped onto the train tracks from above and then been hit by the oncoming train. No identification, no shoes, no idea if she jumped, fell, or was pushed. And who is this mysterious person all in white the break man swears he saw? A compelling Mystery with threads of history woven in. The story was not only told from Lily’s perspective but also that of Marvena and Hildy. Three strong, sassy, self-assured women trying to find their way in a man’s world. Lily was constantly having to prove herself and that she did indeed deserve to be sheriff. This book was well researched and touched on a lot of historical events such as the underground railroad and the WKKK something I had no previous knowledge of. An absorbing Mystery, captivating characters, enthralling history. This book checked all the boxes, and I am eager to see what is next in store for Lily.

About the Book

Jess Montgomery showcases her skills as a storyteller in The Hollows: a powerful, big-hearted and exquisitely written follow-up to her highly acclaimed debut The Widows.

Ohio, 1926: For many years, the railroad track in Moonvale Tunnel has been used as a shortcut through the Appalachian hills. When an elderly woman is killed walking along the tracks, the brakeman tells tales of seeing a ghostly female figure dressed all in white.

Newly elected Sheriff Lily Ross is called on to the case to dispel the myths. With the help of her friends Marvena Whitcomb and Hildy Cooper, Lily follows the woman’s trail to The Hollows–a notorious asylum–and they begin to expose dark secrets long-hidden by time and the mountains.

Hello book friends,

I’m so happy to have been invited to take part in the audio blog tour for this cracking thriller!

TheDilemma_BTB

My Thoughts

Set in the UK in Edinburgh, Detective Inspector Luc Callanach who was a former Interpol Officer, has joined the Crime team in Scotland, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, and also a bag full of rumours that still follow him, and his methods around.

Ava is his work colleague, and they actually make a great pair, they seems to balance themselves out, while Ava is fun loving and knowledge based, Callanach comes across as a grumpy old man with a stick up his ass!

We also get the POV of the murderer, and we are privy to the information in his mind, we can what he is doing, to whom, and who will be next, and let me tell you, It. Is. Dark!!

The gruesome parts are very descriptive, I for one loved them, but be prepared to wince a lot while reading them.

This was a very clever thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you turning the pages (or in my case listening to the audiobook) I stayed up way too late trying to piece things together and work out what was going on.

🎧🎧

Narration was by Robin Laing, a brand new to me narrator.

I thought that he did a great job with the narrating, it must be so difficult to switch back and forth from a French accent to Scottish, and Laing seemed to be able to do it seamlessly.
