Happy Thursday all! This was my first Karin Slaughter and I absolutely loved it! Definitely will not be my last! Thanks Trish for my invitation to the tour!

The Hype IS Real!!!

This was my very first Karin Slaughter and I have to say… I get it! Dark, disturbing, and oh so delicious! This is the ninth book in the Will Trent series, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as a standalone. I’d definitely go back and read the previous books I’d like to learn the history between these characters especially Will and Amanda (his boss/pseudo-mother). Will was quirky and likable, I’d love to witness how his character has evolved through the course of the series.

The book starts with a BANG! Dr. Michelle Spivey a scientist at the CDC is abducted from a Walmart parkinglot. The book then jumps forward a month, will and his girlfriend Sarah(Who is also a medical examiner) are at her parents house when they hear an explosion. The explosion appears to have happened at Emory university home of the CDC and several hospitals. Will and Sarah immediately start heading to the bomb sight knowing they will be needed, but they never get there. There is a car accident, a gun fight, and then another kidnapping. Chaos ensues …we are then caught up in the dark world of white supremacy, terrorism, rape, and pedophilia. Most of this was so timely, so real, it made the book all that more frightening. The book jumps around between the perspectives of Will, Sarah, and Will’s partner Faith. This was extremely impactful because we were always privy as to what was going on, there were even a few times we got the same scene from both Will and Sarah’s perspectives. This book was action packed edge of your seat thrilling from first page to last. Never a doll moment! Karin Slaughter has a new fan right here!

If You Like These, You Might Like My Cornish Romance Series!

Thank you so much to everyone at Audio Killed the Bookmark for letting me share about the book birthday event for A Wedding in Cornwall with their lovely readers! I penned the first of what would become twelve novellas in the series three years ago now and watched with surprise as it climbed to the Top 100 Amazon UK. Readers warmly embraced the story of Julianne, an American event planner who finds a new life, new job, and new love when she takes a job at a gorgeous Cornish estate. For those of you who think it might be right up your street but can’t quite decide, I thought it might be helpful (and fun!) to list some things that readers who like A Wedding in Cornwall also tend to like.

The TV show Poldark:

It’s no secret that A Wedding in Cornwall took some of its inspiration from the BBC’s Poldark. After all, the book’s hero, Matthew Rose, is described as being a Poldark look-alike and nicknamed ‘Ross’ by a few of his admirers (a joke that only the heroine, Julianne, doesn’t get, since she’s never before seen an episode of Poldark when she arrives across the pond!) And then there’s the Cornish setting they have in common—albeit a highly fictionalized version in my book— with Julianne’s world full of romantic cliffside views and scenic beaches, cosy little cottages with rambling gardens, a big manor house, and a sleepy little village where residents gather at the local pub for a night’s entertainment.

Escapist Romance Reads:

By ‘escapist’, I mean fun, uplifting reads that transport you from everyday life to glamorous or exciting settings. Julianne’s work as an event planner involves everything from holiday balls to royal weddings to helping with a televised baking contest that resembles The Great British Bake Off. And for a supposedly sleepy village, there is always plenty of excitement in Ceffylgwyn, not the least of which involves Shakespearean dramas with behind-the-scenes romances, a local talent show based on The X Factor, and even a visit from a famous romance writer in search of inspiration for their next story.

Austen-esque Stuff:

Jane Austen might be the gold standard of romance reads, and she’s certainly influenced my writing in different ways over the years, with several Austen re-tellings in my past publications. With picturesque gardens, a stately manor house, and a hero with a bit of brooding in him, there’s a glimmer of Austen’s influence in Julianne’s world, I hope!

Hallmark Channel Movies:

If you love a good cuppa—or cup of cocoa—with a round of sweet romance Hallmark style, then A Wedding in Cornwall might also be your cup of tea. Julianne may not be getting swept off to a castle with a handsome prince like the heroines in Hallmark’s royal romance movies, but a grand manor house and Poldark-esque gardener is a pretty fair trade, right? Plus you get a cast of quirky, colorful side characters, a picturesque setting, and the kind of happy-ever-after that Hallmark viewers appreciate in their favorite films. There’s even a cosy Christmas story for those who love their seasonal romances (and yes, there’s snow and tree decorating involved).

Harry Potter:

Okay, just kidding. Mostly. I mean, pretty much EVERYONE likes Harry Potter, so the odds are good, right? Ah, well… it was worth a try 😉

Seriously, though, I do hope this will inspire you to give Julianne’s adventures a glance. All twelve novellas are available individually as well as in book bundles and paperback. Happy reading.

Horace McIntosh had set up business in 1957 after listening to his recently arrived compatriots grumble about their inability to get a decent haircut from an English barber. In the following twenty-four years his trade hadn’t altered much: even though the seventies was the decade of the big Afro, for a lot of his younger customers it was still mostly all about a trim and a touch of Dax, or a shave and a splash of Brut. It was the shop’s interior that had undergone the most changes during the time he had been cutting my hair. Over the years the walls had become covered with posters of black football players. When I first went there in the sixties there were only creased sepia-tinted photos of the Caribbean All Stars and Jamaican sides of the fifties. The only exception to the football theme was a framed photo of the all-conquering West Indies cricket team. As time went by, the walls began to be covered with pictures of mainly South American footballers as it would be years before Jamaica’s ‘Reggae Boyz’, or the Trinidad and Tobago side made their appearances at the World Cup finals. Up until then most of Wolverhampton’s West Indian soccer fans supported Brazil – or failing that any international side that happened to be playing England. As I headed into adolescence black players were still a rarity – some said an exotic curiosity – in English soccer, as there seemed to be a common belief amongst professional managers that black men were not robust enough for the rigours of the British game. That began to change in the mid-seventies when Ron Atkinson of nearby West Bromwich Albion became the first high-profile manager to challenge the notion of race-based fragility and put three black players into his team. Photos of Regis, Batson and Cunningham were promptly added to Horace’s wall to join the lonely figure of Clyde Best, a Bermudan who had once played for West Ham United. Wolves followed suit a few years later and put a couple of black players called Hazell and Berry into the first team, giving the town’s black people more than a passing interest about what they were up to. Looking back from a time when nearly one in four of the superstars in the English Premier League are black, the 1980s really do seem a very strange and backward time.

The Summer of Going Topless

Candice Summerville is invisible. No one seems to notice her – not really. Heck, she often doesn’t notice herself, except for her monthly scrutiny in the mirror to check on her body’s steady slide towards middle age.

But when her ancient, practical estate car is consigned to the scrap heap, Candice falls in love with a cute, purple convertible, and from that moment on her life begins to take on a whole new meaning. Strangers wave at her and people stop to talk, and suddenly she isn’t invisible any longer.

Life seems to be looking up, especially when she meets silver fox and handy-man, Paul. There’s just one fly in the ointment, one thing she that has her second-guessing herself.

And she’ll have fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the purple convertible away….

This book was so much FUN and made me want to run out and purchase a purple convertible. Candace is pushing 50, divorced from a cheating husband, and her kids are grown up and out of the house. Her life is pretty humdrum… work, eat, sleep, repeat. Then one day her car breaks down with no chance of being repaired and Candace finds her self sporting a purple convertible. Suddenly everyone is stopping and taking notice of Candace! She starts to rejuvenate her life: yoga, haircut, a new outfit, and even a little romance. But then Candace begins to worry, is it her or is it the convertible?

Loved Candace she was so relatable and likable. I had a lot in common with Candace, I am turning 50 this year, I am divorced, and my kids are almost all grown up. Fortunately though I don’t feel quite as stuck in a rut as Candace did, but still there were a lot of things I could find extremely relatable. This book was just pure entertainment A lovely pick me up! Delightful characters and a whimsical storyline, the perfect book to end your summer with.

Today I have a review for another book I thoroughly enjoyed! A compelling story with a shocking ending!

My Thoughts

”The truth will set you three, but it is the lies that will keep you safe.

Rea Frey has written a compelling tale brimming with secrets and lies, mystery and deceit. I was completely grip from the first page to the shocking end. Lee is a single mother to Mason a charming boy on the autism spectrum. Grace is her BFF newly divorced and has a son the same age as Mason. Noah is Mason’s tutor/therapist, Grace’s friend and Lee’s secret crush. The story bounces between these three character’s points of view as well as present and past. If you are a fan of the unreliable narrator, you will be thrilled to know you get three in this book. Lee, Grace, and Noah all have secrets to hide, all cover them up with lots of lies, and you never know quite how deep the deception runs.

This book was perfectly paced. The twists were revealed throughout the story, keeping you on high alert throughout. Someone is killed early in the book, leading to even more questions. But I truly thought I had all this figured out. Several twist were revealed and I was thinking Yep I’ve got this. BUT then things started to go a little sideways and I realized I didn’t have much of anything figured out. So well told! And yes there were a few unbelievable coincidences, but hey this is fiction! And I loved it! And can I just say that ending! Well done!

🎧🎧🎧 The audio is narrated by Samantha Desz. This is my first time listening to an audio narrated by Samantha and she did a really good job, especially with the different voices and perspectives. Would definitely listen to another book narrated by her.

This book is coming out in the US tomorrow and it completely blew my mind! This was my first John Marrs but definitely will not be my last!

My Thoughts

This is my brain🧠. This is my brain after reading this book🤯. Any questions?

John Marrs completely blew my mind with this exhilarating thriller! Eight passengers in eight separate driverless cars, all of them with secrets, none of them making it to their desired destination. Imagine you’re in a driverless car you have no control, no brakes, no steering wheel, you can’t even open the doors,and somebody has taken over the car. In 2 1/2 hours all eight of these cars will collide head on end it is up to a “jury” and the public to decide who will survive. Or imagine this you are trapped in a room on a jury of sorts and your job is to decide the fate of these eight strangers. Yikes! I don’t know which situation I’d want to be in less.

This was a fast-paced wild ride full of twists, turns, and plenty of bumps in the road. I was right there with these characters in these cars, I could feel their panic and fear. I was also right there in that room trying to determine the fate of these characters. I can’t even imagine determining whether someone should live or die? Part of the brilliance of this story was how the lives of these characters were revealed to us. It was so real and disturbing how my opinion was altered as each piece of information was shared. I was so invested in the story, I seriously could not put it down! And then that end! WHAT! BRAVO John Marrs! This is an absolute can’t miss!

Happy Friday all! We made it!

This book was so so good! A slow burn with an exceptional ending, yes please!🧸

My Thoughts

Lauren North has crafted a clever and compelling psychological thriller. This was an absorbing story packed with tension, suspicion, and heartbreak. Tess has recently lost her husband Mark and now believes that her beloved son has been taken. Tess’s grief and frustration was palpable, drawing you further in as you turn the pages. The book starts off with Tess in the hospital having been stabbed and desperate to know what they are doing to try to find her son Jamie. The book then tells the story of the events leading up to the day of Jamie‘s birthday starting on the day of the fatal accident that killed Mark. Also peppered throughout the book were police interviews with Tess’s brother-in-law Ian and her grief counselor Shelley. I was suspicious of and second guessing everything and everyone. Why was Shelly a virtual stranger such a rock for Tesse? Surely nobody is that kind and supportive to someone they don’t even know. And then there was Ian… he was a little too concerned about life insurance money. I had oh so many theories and all of them wrong! This book left me with my jaw on the floor and a million thoughts running around in my head. An excellent debut that I would absolutely recommend.

Excited to share my review with you today for this addictive story! This is one of those books that you just cannot put down!

My Thoughts

How far are you willing to go for the ones you love? Hannah Mary McKinnon has written an addictive tension filled story that kept me on my toes. This is one of those books that you want to make sure you make time for before picking up, because you’re not going to want to put it down. Imagine this… Your significant other dies leaving you with the responsibility of taking care of her seven-year-old son Logan. You are young so you never made arrangements as to guardianship in case she died, but is there more to it than that? As you start looking for necessary paperwork you begin to discover things were not quite as they seemed, and your significant other had been keeping some huge secrets from you… huge! That is the situation that Josh finds himself in thinking he never knew the woman he loved Grace, at all. Determined to piece things together Josh finds himself in a small town full of secrets and despair.

Really like Josh, I really felt for him throughout this entire story, what a terrible position to find yourself in. The bond he and Logan shared was so sweet and I definitely was hoping that they would end the story as father and son. Josh really had an amazing support system in his sister and best friend, seriously we all need cheerleaders like this behind us! I was all in, furiously turning the pages, needing to know answers to the questions, but then a few things happened that unsettled me a bit. Josh made a questionable decision that didn’t sit well with me. And then the ending… I still am not quite sure what to think. A lot of people had to do a lot of wrong things for that book to have ended the way it did. Surprising? Absolutely! Definitely did not see it coming. Do I recommend the book? Definitely! It was a extremely compelling read, that I am still thinking about days later. For me those are signs of a good book!
