A Whisker in the Dark by Leighann Dobbs @bookouture #bookreview #awhiskerinthedark

Happy hump day all!

Delighted to share with you today my review for this cute cozy story! Many thanks to Noelle for my invitation to the tour🐱🐱

My Thoughts

This book was cute, cozy, and catatastic! Leighann Dobbs knows how to create the perfect comfy environment for a cozy mystery. This book checked off all my cozy mystery boxes: quaint Setting✔️ quirky characters✔️ compelling Mystery✔️ adorable animals✔️ Nero and Marlowe were paws down my favorite characters in the story. Even though I’m still not sure what to think about the cats talking to one another, I liked how smart and savvy they were. Josie, Lily, and the gang were all very likable I just wish there were a tiny bit more character development, and maybe a little more eccentricity. The mystery was fun even if it was a little convenient. This dysfunctional rude family is at the guest house and their ancestors bones are found in the walls of the house. Is there a curse? Is there a treasure? Soon everyone is digging for the treasure and then one of the family members ends up dead. And thank goodness Nero, Marlowe, and friends were on the case leading Josie in the right direction. The cats were definitely smarter than the humans in this book, especially the bumbling local sheriff. Josie was also sometimes a little more concerned about baking the perfect Bundt cake rather than the fact that people were dropping Dead at her inn. Also I have to add in that this dysfunctional families business was creating cheese sculptures, is this a real thing? I need to know! This was a quick cozy read perfect for a lazy summer afternoon.

*** Big thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

Description:

Discovering the 300-year-old skeleton of shipping tycoon Jedediah Biddeford in the ballroom wall is a big old hassle for Josie Waters, owner of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse. Especially when Biddeford’s descendants turn up, certain that a family legend about treasure buried nearby must be true.

Josie is too busy dreaming up the perfect cake for the Oyster Cove’s 250th anniversary celebration to worry about the Biddeford family – plus half the town – digging up her yard… until one of her guests is murdered in the guesthouse garden.

With worries that her guesthouse will get a reputation for being the kind of place you only leave in a body bag, Josie must put her detective skills to work to find the killer. Lucky for her, Nero and Marlowe and their gang of cat sleuths are also on the case.

From the old wharf, to the town common, to the guesthouse itself with its many nooks and crannies, the cats are sure to sniff out the killer… but can they help Josie stop the person behind the mysterious murder before they strike again?

A fantastic page-turner from a bestselling author, purrfeect for fans of Agatha Christie, Adele Abbott, cat lovers and everyone in between!

How to land a Literary Agent

The truth of publishing is that the majority of publishers require you to go through a literary agent if you want them to take a look at your work. Having said that, literary agents are not just a means of filtration. They are literally the gatekeepers of the publishing world and all the treasures that lie within, so to speak.

It may seem like there are a lot of agents out there, but that isn’t true. Yes, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, spread across the US, UK, India, Europe etc, but they are not enough. Most of these agents are getting hundreds of submissions from authors every month, and at most they may sign on a handful of new authors every year. That doesn’t sound too good, does it? The good news is that if you follow a few simple rules, you can not only get an agent to notice you, but even consider signing you on.

The first rule is to make sure your work is up to the mark. Literary agents hate it when they get distracted from the story by grammatical errors and typos that could have been corrected by basic proofreading. Some agents simply abandon reading the material, no matter how compelling, if they feel that it contains too many typos. If you want an agent to give you some of his/her time, you need to make it worth their while. They expect a well edited submission, and a writer should make sure that they provide them with that.

Once you are sure you have done your absolute best in making sure the work is top notch, research some of the agents you are interested in, and check whether they actually represent the genre you’ve written. If yes, proceed to look at their submission guidelines. I cannot emphasize enough on the importance of adhering to submission guidelines. If you follow them all correctly and provide the agent with well edited initial chapters, there is a very good chance that the agent will give you due consideration. This is how unknown writers end up being represented by top agents. They follow the guidelines, write a compelling story and edit it properly. Since their submission ticks all the boxes, the agent reads it, and before you know it, you have a full manuscript request from that agent.

Even when you follow all the guidelines to the book, you will still receive tons of rejections. That’s basically due to the fact that this is a very subjective market, and not everyone may like what you have written, but there will definitely be someone out there who will. It is just a matter of finding the right agent.

Heathcliff by Sue Barnard @authorsusanb @rararesources #Heathcliff #excerpt

Happy Tuesday!

Have you read Wuthering Heights? Don’t tell anybody but I haven’t🤫 but I do know there is a character named HeathCliff and this is his story!

Heathcliff

It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…”

Cathy’s immortal words from Wuthering Heights change Heathcliff’s life. At just seventeen years of age, heartbroken and penniless, he runs away to face an unknown future.

Three years later, he returns – much improved in manners, appearance and prosperity.

But what happened during those years? How could he have made his fortune, from nothing? Who might his parents have been? And what fate turned him into literature’s most famous anti-hero?

For almost two centuries, these questions have remained unanswered.

Until now…

Sue Barnard is a British novelist, editor and award-winning poet whose family background is far stranger than any work of fiction. She would write a book about it if she thought anybody would believe her.

Sue was born in North Wales but has spent most of her life in and around Manchester. She speaks French like a Belgian, German like a schoolgirl, and Italian and Portuguese like an Englishwoman abroad.

Her mind is so warped that she has appeared on BBC TV’s Only Connect quiz show, and she has also compiled questions for BBC Radio 4’s fiendishly difficult Round Britain Quiz. This once caused one of her sons to describe her as “professionally weird.” The label has stuck.

Sue’s first novel, The Ghostly Father (a new take on the traditional story of Romeo & Juliet), was officially released on St Valentine’s Day 2014. Since then she has produced five more novels: Nice Girls Don’t (2014), The Unkindest Cut of All (2015), Never on Saturday (2017), Heathcliff (2018), and Finding Nina (2019).

Sue now lives in Cheshire, UK, with her extremely patient husband and a large collection of unfinished scribblings.

Excerpt

In this extract, which comes very early in the story, Nelly Dean describes her conversation with Cathy.

I really don’t understand what Miss Catherine can be thinking of. The only possible explanation is that she must have lost her mind.

Earlier this evening, she came to see me in the kitchen, almost in tears. During the afternoon, whilst Mr Edgar was visiting her, she behaved appallingly towards me and young Hareton, and she even slapped Mr Edgar’s face. Goodness only knows what he must have thought of her. When she first appeared I wondered if she might have come to say she was sorry, though I’m well aware that this is not in her nature.

What she did say almost knocked me sideways. She told me that Mr Edgar has asked her to marry him, and that she has accepted! Then – incredibly – she asked me if she was doing the right thing.

As if I could give her an answer! But in any case, it certainly isn’t my place to tell her. If she really is doing the right thing by marrying Mr Edgar, she would know in her own heart, and wouldn’t need to ask anyone – let alone the likes of me.

I asked her if she loves Mr Edgar. She said she does, because he’s “handsome, and pleasant, and young, and cheerful, and rich.” And also because he loves her.

My first thought, on hearing this, is one which I would rather not repeat. My second thought was Heaven help poor Mr Edgar… I managed to control myself and tried to reason with Miss Catherine, suggesting that she might be marrying him for all the wrong reasons.

But even though I could see she was already beginning to have doubts about it (she even admitted that in her heart and her soul she was convinced she was wrong), she wouldn’t listen to me. Not that I’m surprised. She was always a wilful and headstrong thing, even as a child.

Then she told me that she’d once dreamed she was in Heaven, but she’d been so miserable that the angels had thrown her back down to earth. It made me feel very uneasy, to be honest, until she explained that she had no more business to be in Heaven than she had to marry Mr Edgar.

But then she said, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff.”

I was so taken aback at this that at first I failed to notice a slight sound from behind the settle, and possibly the creak of a door. I glanced up, and imagined I saw a faint movement in the shadows. But Miss Catherine, who was sitting on the floor with her back to the door, went on talking.

If I thought she was crazy before, what she said next convinced me of it. Her next words, after saying it would degrade her to marry Heathcliff, were “…so he shall never know how I love him”.

Oh dear God in Heaven.

I opened my mouth to say: “Love is a great leveller, Miss Catherine. So if you really love Heathcliff, then the question of rank or status wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, enter into it.” But before I could speak she just carried on, saying her soul and Heathcliff’s were one and the same, whereas hers and Edgar’s were as different as they could possibly be.

Yet another reason why marrying Mr Edgar is the worst thing she could possibly do.

When she finally paused for breath I held up my hand for silence, saying I’d heard the sound of Joseph’s cart in the yard, and it was likely that Heathcliff would be with him. At that point, she panicked, clearly terrified that Heathcliff might have any suspicion of what she’s done.

“But Heathcliff doesn’t know anything about love, does he, Nelly?” she declared.

“How can you be so sure of that, Miss Catherine?” I replied. “Is there any reason why he shouldn’t know? Let’s just suppose that he does – and that you might be the one he loves. Can you even begin to imagine how he might feel, once he finds out that you’re going to marry Edgar Linton?”

“But we’ll still be together,” she protested. “Don’t you understand, Nelly? Nobody will ever separate us! Edgar will understand, once he realises how much Heathcliff means to me.”

My face must have betrayed my horror at this point, because she carried on: “Nelly, I know you must think I’m a selfish brat. But has it not occurred to you that if I married Heathcliff, we’d be little more than beggars? Whereas if I marry Edgar, I can help Heathcliff to better himself.”

I was aghast. “With your husband’s money, Miss Catherine? Do you honestly think you can get away with that? And, begging your pardon, I think that’s your worst reason yet for agreeing to marry Mr Edgar.”

“No, it is the best reason of all!” she shouted. “Don’t you see how unselfish I’m being? I’m doing this for Heathcliff, not for myself or for Edgar! Don’t you understand?”

“No, Miss Catherine, I’m afraid I don’t understand.” By now I had run out of patience with her. “As far as I can tell, either you have no idea of what is expected of a married woman, or you are just a spoilt, unprincipled child. Please spare me any more of your ramblings.”

At this point the door opened and Joseph entered, effectively bringing our conversation to a close. Miss Catherine slumped into a seat in the corner, whilst I moved to the stove to continue preparing the supper. As I passed round to the other side of the settle, I spotted a small pale object on the floor underneath the bench by the wall. Bending down to retrieve it, I recognised Heathcliff’s clay pipe.

I recalled having heard the door creak. That was when I realised what had happened: Heathcliff must have overheard the earlier part of our conversation, up to when Miss Catherine said it would degrade her to marry him – at which point, he’d got up and left.

Never Look Back by Alison Gaylin @alisongaylin @wmmorrowbooks @harperaudio #bookreview #audiobook #neverlookback

Happy Monday everybody!

Super excited to share my review for this book today! This is probably the BEST thriller I have read this summer! ALL THE STARS for this one!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

About Never Look Back

• Paperback: 368 pages
• Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks (July 2, 2019)

From the Edgar Award-winning author of If I Die Tonight

Reminiscent of the bestsellers of Laura Lippman and Harlan Coben—with a Serial-esque podcast twist—an absorbing, addictive tale of psychological suspense from the author of the highly acclaimed and Edgar Award-nominated What Remains of Me and the USA Today bestselling and Shamus Award-winning Brenna Spector series.

For thirteen days in 1976, teenage murderers April Cooper and Gabriel LeRoy terrorized Southern California’s Inland Empire, killing a dozen victims before perishing themselves in a fire… or did they? More than 40 years later, twentysomething podcast producer Quentin Garrison blames his troubled upbringing on the murders. And after a shocking message from a source, he has reason to believe April Cooper may still be alive. Meanwhile, New York City film columnist Robin Diamond is coping with rising doubts about her husband and terrifying threats from internet trolls. But that’s nothing compared to the outrageous phone call she gets from Quentin… and a brutal home invasion that makes her question everything she ever believed in. Is Robin’s beloved mother a mass murderer? Is there anyone she can trust?

Told through the eyes of those destroyed by the Inland Empire Killings—including Robin, Quentin, and a fifteen-year-old April Cooper—Never Look Back asks the question:

How well do we really know our parents, our partners—and ourselves?

My Thoughts

BEST THRILLER of the SUMMER!!!

Alison Gaylin completely sucked me in with this tense absorbing dark story. 1976 California the Inland Empire ( fun fact is where I live). Two teenagers go on a killing spree that ends with them both dying in a fire. Present day quinton a crime podcaster is investigating these serial killers whose actions had a direct impact on his life. In the course of his investigation he happens across a film journalist living in New England who also has a tie to the story. What transpires is a tents and disturbing search for the truth. The book is told from the perspective of Quinton, Robin, and a young April Cooper (one of the teenagers). I found each of these characters perspectives unique and compelling. Aprils story was told to us in letters written to her future child, this was both chilling and endearing. Not going to lie I really liked April as well as Quinton and Robin and as things began to unravel I was shocked. This was a book that really made you question how well do you know the people in your life? Your parents? Your significant other? Your coworker? And the twists kept coming! As soon as I thought aha I got this figured out the book slammed me and said not so fast inspector Berit! This was just a brilliantly told story that kept me invested and on the edge from first page to last! If you love thrillers, books about serial killers, crime podcasts then this is a can’t miss!

Both narrators did a wonderful job with the narration of the story. As always getting a voice to extremely well develop characters just adds another dimension to the story. You can listen to the narrator’s as they present this scripted podcast of what Quinton was working on during this book.

Guest Post for Audio Killed the Bookmark

The Other Side of Books

By Grace Parks

There are three sides to every story. Your side. Their side. The truth. And the truth is usually an amalgamation of both sides. Life is never black and white. While this is about books, this post can apply to any of the creative arts. The moment you put something you’ve created out into the world, is the moment all your walls come crashing down. Not by you, but by everyone who is there to judge you. And judge you they will.

Recently, a girl in one of my Facebook writing groups admitted anxiety and fear was getting in the way of her writing. What followed was a slew of encouragement from other writers, most of whom suffer from the same inflictions. However, these comments were from fellow writers, and not the general public. That’s the difference. It showed me that most creatives have a tendency for deep insecurities, yet we’ve put ourselves in a situation that’s asking for ridicule. It’s not an easy route to take, and probably the biggest reason why most people never end up sharing their creations. I wonder how many amazing books are stored on computers all around the world. It’s sad to think that most of these will never get seen.

People forget that there is an actual person behind a book (or creation). They don’t see the excitement, the fears, the endless hours of work that goes into it. They don’t see the human side to it. So far, I’ve been lucky with my books, but that’s probably because I’m still new to it. The more people who read my books, the more I’ll be exposing myself to negative reviews. So far, my reviews have been great, and mostly positive. Some have been so wonderful they have reduced me to happy tears (and an awkward little dance at my desk). I never understood the joy someone would get from a good review until now. I’ve had one bad review, one little two star on Goodreads that shattered my fragile heart. I quickly went through some famous authors, like Stephen King, to see what reviews they got. In King’s one book he had around 2000 one star reviews and a load of awful comments. As ridiculous as this was, it made me feel a bit better. If King could get bad reviews, I could too. Sure, I know that we all have different tastes. What I love you might hate, but there’s a way of putting your point across while still remembering the person on the receiving end. You don’t have to like something, but you don’t have to slate it either.

It’s sad that we live in a world where we’re so frightened to share something of ourselves for fear of what others might say. So, for those who have put their work out there regardless of this, I salute you. Let’s be brave (or at least pretend to be)together.

Sisters of Willow House by Susanne O’Leary @bookouture #bookreview

Happy Sunday all!

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! It is still pretty hot here but I heard a rumor it’s supposed to cool down next week! Excited to share with you today my review for this delightful story that made me laugh! Thank you Noelle for my invitation to the tour!🌳

My Thoughts

Susanne O’Leary wisked me away to the Irish shore with this heartwarming story. This is the second book in the Sandy Cove series but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Roisin and her husband have not been getting along. SO when he purchases a camper van it is the final straw and they decide to take a break of sorts. While hubby is off traveling about the country Roisin heads to willow house to help her sister Maeve with the renovations. While in Sandy Cove Roisin becomes friendly with a man named Declan and….

This was an entertaining and engaging story that kept me invested in these sisters lives throughout. I loved both the sisters and I especially love the bond between them. The setting was gorgeous, another place I really want to visit. There were times in this book I was slightly frustrated with Roisin. I was really worried about some of the choices she might make and sometimes she was a tad bit hypocritical. A perfect summer read filled with amazing characters, a lovely setting, and an ending guaranteed to make you smile.

*** thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

A heart-warming novel about the bond between sisters, set along Ireland’s windswept shores, where romance beckons and secrets unfold…

Roisin McKenna and her husband Cian are taking time apart. Unsure of what she wants, Roisin’s prayers are answered when she receives a call from her sister Maeve who is desperate for her help.

Roisin heads to Sandy Cove to help Maeve restore their aunt’s gorgeous tumbledown mansion Willow House and soon all she has time to focus on are its crumbling walls. Despite a shocking announcement from Maeve and hidden secrets in the house’s rafters, Roisin begins to feel a sense of self she’s been missing for years.

The ties that bind Roisin to her husband seem to be unfurling in the Irish wind, when she unexpectedly stumbles into a mysterious man on the beach. Suddenly, she’s swept up in the idea of another life she could lead…

The restoration may have brought the sisters back together, but as a storm rolls over the coast Roisin feels sure she must make a choice. Will her time at Willow House teach her the precious lessons she needs to return home or has the cove called to her in ways she’d never imagined it could?

About the Author

When Polly Met Olly by Zoe May @zoe_writes @rararesources #bookreview #whenpollymetolly

Happy Thursday all!

This week went so fast! End it is HOT!🥵 this was a fun lighthearted story that made me smile and I am happy to share my review with you! Thanks much to Rachel for my invitation to this tour!🧡

When Polly Met Olly

Polly and Olly were never supposed to meet…

Polly might spend her days searching for eligible matches for her elite list of clients at her New York dating agency, but her own love life is starting to go up in smoke.

Even worse, she can’t stop thinking about the very person she’s meant to be setting her latest client up with… surely it can’t get any worse!

But then Polly bumps into oh-so-handsome Olly, who heads up a rival agency, and realizes that perhaps all really is fair in love and dating war…

Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella and Debbie Viggiano.

My Thoughts

Zoe May has written a lovely and heartwarming tale full of love. Polly just landed herself a job as a matchmaker, the irony is she’s not very successful at love herself. I found Polly’s work as a matchmaker quite interesting, I wish there had been a little more of her on the job in the book. Loved her relationship with her roommate Gabe. He was such a great friend and an engaging character. Her boss Derek was also a great character who brought a lot to the story, we all would love a boss as supportive as him. Where the story fell a little short for me was the relationship between Polly and Olly. I am not certain if it is that it didn’t really begin until maybe about 60% in the book? Or that I just didn’t feel the connection between them? Then again I did love the happily ever after? So I realize I am kind of contradicting myself. I think it is because Zoe May is such a wonderful storyteller that even though I didn’t always feel it she made me feel it in the end.

The highlight of this book for me really was Polly’s interaction with all of her friends. I thought it was very strong when it came to the secondary characters. And I would love a future book with any of them. I found a lot of Polly’s past dating escapades quite humorous. I was also definitely surprised by Olly’s little twist, I knew he was hiding something just didn’t know what it was. All in all this was an entertaining story that put a smile on my face. A lovely story that will warm your heart, really made me think about what is important when it comes to love and finding your perfect match.

Only the Lonely by Joanne Nicholson @jolnicholson @rararesources #bookspotlight #onlythelonely

Happy hump day all!

We are having a heatwave here it is hot hot hot! Over 100°F and that is over 38°C.🥵

I was supposed to post this on Tuesday, but I scheduled it on the wrong day🤦‍♀️ and I blame that on the heat and my age and…. The premise of the story sounds so intriguing, and time permitting I intend on reading this book sooner than later.

Only the Lonely

After Tiffany is orphaned on the night of her 18th birthday, she discovers, as the sole heir to her parents’ estate, she has inherited a frozen embryo from when her parents did IVF to have her. Feeling lost, alone and longing for a sense of family, Tiffany can’t bring herself to destroy or donate the embryo. Instead, she decides to be impregnated with her biological twin.

A legal battle ensues over whether the embryo is a person or property and the ethics of whether it is acceptable to give birth to your own sibling.

Set in Australia, this contemporary fiction novel is full of emotion, dilemmas and unexpected friendships, as Tiffany forges a new life without her parents.

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores by Laura Briggs @paperdollwrites @rararesources #bookreview #aspiritedgirloncornishshores

Happy Tuesday all!

This delightful story brought a touch of Halloween to July! Super excited to share my review with you today! Thanks Rachel for my invitation!🎃

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores (A Little Hotel in Cornwall Book 2)

It looks like a perfect Cornish autumn, with aspiring novelist Maisie Clark still finding inspiration as a maid at the historic Penmarrow Hotel. Between the staff of quirky co-workers, glamorous and unusual guests, and her growing friendship with the charming but mysterious Sidney Daniels, Maisie is living out adventures instead of just penning them in the pages of her would-be novel’s growing number of chapters.

And then there’s the slight problem of keeping the balance between friendship and ‘something more’ with Sidney, who’s helping introduce her to the village’s version of a Cornish Halloween, and has recently taken an interest in Maisie’s secret that may change things between them. But even Maisie’s imagination can’t conjure the unusual event this Halloween brings to the Penmarrow. An eccentric earl has chosen this site to host his lavish birthday celebration that includes a pretty (and perceptive) young psychic whose predictions seem to have everyone on edge — and, to Maisie’s delight, the elusive novelist Alistair Davies is rumored to be part of the guest list! But with the earl’s bickering relatives and illustrious friends on hand— and more than one ghost of the past waiting to be revealed — it’s anyone’s guess what the festivities will bring before the party is over.

Will the psychic foretell doom for the earl’s gathering—and is her ‘gift’ as genuine as it seems? Will Maisie finally meet her favorite author face to face? And, more importantly, what about the romantic sparks that fly between Maisie and Sidney?

My Thoughts

Laura Briggs has packed a lot into the 162 pages of this charming story. Cornwall at Halloween set the tone for this tale. This is the second book in the series, I do believe it could be red as a standalone. But with these short books why not treat yourself to all of them? There is a sprinkling of romance between Maisie and Sidney. Maisie is still working at the hotel, still writing her book, still waiting to meet her idol author. However the main focus of the story was the hotel guests and the earl’s 100th birthday celebration. The Earl’s family has rented out the hotel for the week, with celebrations involving séances and fortune-telling. I thought this added such a fun yet spooky element to the story. An engauging story that left me wondering what’s next in this little gem of a series?
