Making Up by Helena Hunting @HelenaHunting @smpromance @stmartinspress #coverreveal #makingup

coming July 16, 2019!!!

A new standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting.

Cosy Felton is great at her job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list.

Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him.

As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City, Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world.

Park Avenue Summer by Renée Rosen @ReneeRosen1 @BerkleyPub #bookreview #parkavenuesummer

Happy Tuesday all!

Excited to share my review for this book that I absolutely loved! This was a book I did not want to end, another fabulous group read!🌷

My Thoughts

HOT DAMN this book was simply BRILLIANT!!!

Renée Rosen has written one heck of a book that is being immediately added to my favorites shelf! When I was a girl in my late teens and my 20s I never missed an issue of Cosmo it was hands-down my favorite magazine. This book not only tells the story of the reconstruction of Cosmopolitan magazine, but also of the start of the sexual revolution in the 60s. As a girl who grew up in the 80s it is hard to believe how far we came in 20 years, I don’t think anyone even batted an eyelash if I purchased a Cosmo in 1985? It is women like Helen Gurley Brown Who we have to thank for taking those first steps towards empowerment and liberation. And seriously what would we have done without those fabulous quizzes every month?

Alice has moved from Ohio to NYC with the dream of being a photographer. Soon enough she figures out it’s not going to be quite as easy as that, so with the help of a family friend she lands a job as a secretary. Not really what she wants to do, but she is excited that she will be working with and for, Helen Gurley Brown. Hgb who became infamous for writing the controversial book about sex and the single girl is now editor and chief of Cosmopolitan. Hgb has plans to turn the magazine world on its head, something she meets with much resistance. HGB will not be deterred though she is going to write a magazine for her girls; the single working girl who loves fashion, beauty, and *gasp* sex. The book is told from the perspective of Alice and through her eyes we get a front row look at the life of this dynamic woman and transitional time in history.

The story being told from Alice’s point of view I thought was extremely impactful. You really got to see how much Helen Gurley Brown cared for and wanted to mentor “her girls.“ Alice was a great character and I loved watching her navigate her way through her first real job and her first fling. Alice was smart and strong and I loved how she really knew what advice to take and what advice not to. Hgb’s message was so perfect. That as a woman it’s OK to have dreams and desires and to go after them, and probably even more important it’s OK to screw up. I also loved her theory about Don wands, because isn’t that the truth.

This book perfectly marries fact and fiction.Miss Rosen’s engaging writing style gave me such a well defined sense of place and time. I felt as though I was completely transported to 1960s NYC. I loved all the little attention to detail, the runs in the stockings, the jewelry, and the smoking, oh the smoking, so much smoking.

Simply put I was completely captivated by this enthralling story. I cannot recommend it enough!

*** many thanks to Berkley for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

Mad Men meets The Devil Wears Prada as Renée Rosen draws readers into the glamorous New York City of 1965 and Cosmopolitan magazine, where a brazen new editor in chief – Helen Gurley Brown – shocks America and saves a dying publication by daring to talk to women about all things off-limits…
New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss, who leaves her small Midwestern town to chase her big-city dreams and unexpectedly lands the job of a lifetime working for the first female editor in chief of
 Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown.
Nothing could have prepared Alice for the world she enters as editors and writers resign on the spot, refusing to work for the woman who wrote the scandalous bestseller
Sex and the Single Girl, and confidential memos, article ideas, and cover designs keep finding their way into the wrong hands. When someone tries to pull Alice into a scheme to sabotage her boss, she is more determined than ever to help Helen succeed. A Little Hotel in Cornwall by Laura Briggs @paperdollwrites @rararesources #bookreview #alittlehotelincornwall

Happy Tuesday all!

Delighted to share with you today my review for this charming story. Laura Briggs always brings a smile to my face! Thank you so much Rachel for my invitation to the tour!🌼

A Little Hotel in Cornwall

Struggling American waitress and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark dreams of becoming a full-time writer — even though in real life she’s just lost her chance at an exclusive writer’s mentorship program that would give her novel its big break. Desperate, she decides to take a chance and ask her favourite writer, a celebrated but reclusive English novelist, to help her find a second chance.

When she receives the author’s reply in an envelope with a Cornish postmark, Maisie decides not to take the writer’s half-hearted ‘no’ for an answer. With nothing to lose, she takes off for the author’s last known location, a beautiful hotel on Cornwall’s western coast. But when the hotel mistakes her for the latest applicant for a maid’s position, Maisie finds herself given an opportunity too good to lose … and a chance for a summer adventure far bigger than she ever imagined.

Surrounded by breathtaking Cornwall and working in an elegant hotel, Maisie’s world becomes one of secret identities, quirky friends, and unintentional mishaps — and despite reminders of past relationship disasters, a certain handsome, charming local resident Sidney Daniels has her conflicted about her heart’s desires, too.

Will Maisie find the chance she’s been waiting for — and a possible new romance — in her perfect Cornish summer?

My Thoughts

A fun uplifting feel good story, the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Laura Briggs writes short sweet Novellas that pack a powerful punch. This is the first book in a brand new series that looks like it’s going to be quite delightful. I mean seriously how can you go wrong with the lovely setting of Cornwall. Someday I will make it there, in the meantime I will visit vicariously through books.

Maisie is an aspiring author. When she finds herself without a mentor for a prestigious writing program she packs her stuff up and heads to Cornwal in order to convince her favorite author to mentor her. When she gets there she finds herself at a beautiful hotel and is mistaken for a maid. What ensues is a fun story of mistaken identity, quirky characters, old loves and new opportunities. Maisie was a great character and I enjoyed watching her navigate some pretty precarious situations.

The perfect start to a new series, 117 pages of pure delight!

By Invitation Only by Dorothea Benton Frank @DortheaFrank @WmMorrowBooks @TLCBookTours #bookreview #byinvitationonly

Happy Monday all!

Delighted to share with you today my review for this charming story! Many thanks to Trish at TLC Book Tours for my invitation to the tour!💐

My Thoughts

A delightful story packed with charm, humor, and heart!

Dorothea Benton Frank has constructed an engaging tale oozing with Southern charm. I really enjoy reading southern fiction, I am fascinated by the south and its history and traditions. I also really enjoy books with colorful well developed characters and this book had those in abundance! This book left me with a big smile on my face and a craving for peach pie!

Two very different women from two very different backgrounds. Diane is a single mother living on the family farm in South Carolina earning a living off the land. Susan is a socialite living in Chicago wanting for nothing.A collision of north and south occurs when Fred (Diane’s son) and Shelby (Susan‘s daughter) get engaged. What transpires is two very different engagement parties, one with a cow and sweet tea and one with champagne and glitz. A glamorous wedding with an off the charts price tag. BUT then tragedy hits both families that ultimately brings them closer together than they would have ever thought.

I loved Diane, the farm, and the sense of family. Susan was a total which, but I think this was done to show a huge contrast between these women. I would tend to believe that most people wealthy or not would not have behaved the same in the same situation, but it did make for an entertaining story. This book was really such a fun and lighthearted read. I loved the characters and the emphasis on the importance of family. Looking forward to my next book from Miss Frank.

*** many thanks to William Morrow for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

The Lowcountry of South Carolina is where By Invitation Only begins at a barbecue engagement party thrown by Diane English Stiftel, her brother Floyd, and her parents to celebrate her son’s engagement. On this gorgeous, magical night, the bride’s father, Alejandro Cambria, a wealthy power broker whose unbelievably successful career in private equity made him one of Chicago’s celebrated elite, discovers the limits and possibilities of cell phone range. While the mother of the bride, Susan Kennedy Cambria, who dabbles in the world of public relations and believes herself deserving of every square inch of her multimillion-dollar penthouse and imaginary carrara marble pedestal, learns about moonshine and dangerous liaisons.

Soon By Invitation Only zooms to Chicago, where the unraveling accelerates. Nearly a thousand miles away from her comfortable, familiar world, Diane is the antithesis of the bright lights and super-sophisticated guests attending her son Fred’s second engagement party. Why a second party? Maybe it had been assumed that the first one wouldn’t be up to snuff? Fred is marrying Shelby Cambria, also an only child. The Cambrias’ dearest wish is for their daughter to be happy. If Shelby wants to marry Frederick, aka Fred, they will not stand in her way—although Susan does hope her friends won’t think her daughter is marrying more than a few degrees beneath her socially. At the same time, Diane worries that her son will be lost to her forever.

By Invitation Only is a tale of two families, one struggling to do well, one well to do, and one young couple—the privileged daughter of Chicago’s crème de la crème and the son of hard -working Southern peach farmers.

Dorothea Benton Frank offers a funny, sharp, and deeply empathetic novel of two very different worlds—of limousines and pickup trucks, caviars and pigs, skyscrapers and ocean spray—filled with a delightful cast of characters who all have something to hide and a lot to learn. A difference in legal opinions, a headlong dive from grace, and an abrupt twist will reveal the truth of who they are and demonstrate, when it truly counts, what kind of grit they have. Are they living the life they want, what regrets do they hold, and how would they remake their lives if they were given the invitation to do so?

By Invitation Only is classic Dorothea Benton Frank—a mesmerizing Lowcountry Tale that roars with spirit, humor, and truth, and forces us to reconsider our notions of what it means to be a Have or a Have Not.

Excerpt

The Equinox Hunt was the once-every-ten-moon foray into the chakkha, or jungle, made by only the most celebrated hunters of the Nabii tribe of Numeria. It’s primary purpose was to keep the beast population to manageable levels, and stop them from foraging into the grasslands, but had long ago become a reliable way to create fortune for some Nabii tribesmen (simply called ‘the Hunters’), and their families.

Although wealth and riches beyond all imagination could be found beyond the gates of the chief Nabii citadel, Abir City, if the Hunters knew where to look, for most families it was more likely that they would return to the gates destitute, starving, and missing several family members.

K’Nan knew this as well as anyone. He knew he was looking at mostly dead men. Damn men are such fools, he thought. Most of these hunters were already successful enough to provide for their families, own property, perhaps even bribe for themselves a pathetic position on the council. Success was never enough, and, in fact, it spurs on the hunger drive for more success.

This time, he th              ought, things just may turn out differently for them. Why he had decided to lead the Hunt this year was a puzzle even to himself.

He knew better than to rely on the nonsensical rumors that had been trickling out of the wilderness for the last year and a half. Tales of mythical beasts and fearsome fighters attacking the Numerian migrants seemed just that, more myth than reality, except…

Except he’d also dreamt of them for the last ten years of his life. He could probably count the number of peaceful nights he’d slept in that time quite easily if he stopped to think about it. There damned sure hadn’t been many.

How could he sleep? The unimaginable horror of some of the things he’d seen during those dreams weren’t easy to forget—man-eating beasts, blood thirsty warriors, and infants dying in the wilderness.

It was this last dream, the one about three infant children that spurred him toward the savannah. The innermost reaches of the savannah were referred to as the chakkha—the destination of the Equinox hunters, the Win-Daji.

“Why does it bother you so much?” he said to himself. “It’s just a dream like any other, and those other three are long lost now.”

And yet here he was. All because of a dream.

He shook his head at himself. “When will you finally give up hope?”

The winds started blowing even more briskly now, bringing a mini-sandstorm to the town gates. Instinctively, everyone covered their eyes and faces, through conditioning more than fear.

It was apparent that they were in no danger from sand this far from the wilderness, but hiding from it was a habit both born and bred in them from childbirth. Heat can indeed kill you, but in the wilderness you learn to fear the sand much more than the heat.

Luckily for the Win-Daji, the summer had not begun. In the summer, sandstorms morphed from deadly catastrophic—it was widely known that the one approaching would last for many months and be one of the hottest ever recorded.

The hunter talking with the sentries now was unique enough to catch K’Nan’s interest. This man was tall and pale-skinned (a rarity this far south) with a scar leading from the corner of his left eye to his left ear, a love kiss from a Deluthian rhino most likely, K’Nan’s imoya, or spirit, told him.

He wore his hair in the traditional Nabii tribesman style, shaved on the sides with a strip of hair about two inches high down the middle. On his hip he carried a crescent sword, very worn and very menacing, and two bows slung carelessly across his back.

Tied around his left thigh was a two-cubic-long dagger with a polished bone handle covered with notches. This man has done some killing, thought K’Nan, and without a doubt not confined it to beasts.

Whatever he was arguing with the sentries about must’ve been important. Gradually all of the other Win-Daji and Halanbi moved closer to them to listen in. Some were nodding and raising their weapons. Every now and then there’d be a little shout of encouragement from the group. Meanwhile the guards were shaking their heads all the more emphatically.

K’Nan ended his reverie and motioned his two companions, Semri and Semarion, to follow him down the rocky path toward the gates. The steadfast twin brothers hastily complied.

They had fought and hunted with him the better part of the last five years and were two of the only people he felt he could really rely on, despite the fact that they were not full-blooded Numerians. So, he’d asked them to accompany him, without telling them the true reason.

What are you so worried about? He asked himself. Aren’t you K’nan the Savage Slayer, a legend in all three territories of the savannah, defender of the Numerians, the scourge of all Panthia? How many countless men have died under your two-bladed spear, deservedly all?

How many beasts have you saved these wretched villagers from? You’ve dined with tribal chieftains between both seas, shared their spoils, and bedded their daughters. How could a life as full as yours end so quickly? Have you forgotten what the prophetess told you?

The Missing Years By Lexie Eliot @BerkleyPub #bookreview #themisingyears

Happy Sunday all!

Thrilled to share with you today my review for this creepy and atmospheric story! This was a group read and I’m glad I had friends to discuss this one with!💀

My Thoughts

Creepy. Atmospheric. Haunting.

Lexie Elliot Will completely transport you to this Erie Scottish house with her descriptive writing. I could feel the cold and contempt seeping from the house. The house has a life of its own and is probably the most dynamic character in the book. This is a slow burner that combines mystery, suspense, and magical realism.

Ailsa inherits a house, well half a house. The other half belongs to her father who she has not seen for over 20 years. Unable to sell the house until her father is found, or pronounced dead; Ailsa moves into the house along with her half sister Carrie. It doesn’t take Ailsa Long to figure out the house has a mind and a heartbeat of its own. Not only that she discovers a intruder in the house her very first night there. Then things start appearing and disappearing, noises are heard and there is that feeling of being watched at all times. A dead fox at the door, fire alarms going off, and the flies… oh the flies! Just thinking about the flies gives me the heebie-jeebies! So is the house friend or foe? Is it warning her or scaring her off?

For the most part I really liked this book it was so atmospheric and evocative. However some parts were extremely slow. Also as much as I enjoyed the magical realism element of this book, I wish it had been explored a little more in depth. Time folding? I was left with a few questions I would have liked answered. I recommend this to people who enjoy descriptive writing, a slower burn, and a touch of magic.

*** many thanks to Berkley for my copy of this book ***

About the Book

An eerie, old Scottish manor in the middle of nowhere that’s now hers.

Ailsa Calder has inherited half of a house. The other half belongs to a man who disappeared without a trace twenty-seven years ago—her father.

Leaving London behind to settle the inheritance from her mother’s estate, Ailsa returns to her childhood home, nestled amongst the craggy peaks of the Scottish Highlands, joined by the half-sister who’s almost a stranger to her.

Ailsa can’t escape the claustrophobic feeling that the house itself is watching her—as if her past hungers to consume her. She also can’t ignore how the neighborhood animals refuse to set one foot within the gates of the garden.

When the first nighttime intruder shows up, Ailsa fears that the manor’s careless rugged beauty could cost her everything.

The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver (Lincoln Rhyme, #1) #Mystery #Thriller #Crime #AudiobookReview

Hello book friends,

A little Oldie-but-goldie review today, I keep meaning to read the rest of the series but keep getting distracted but other pretty books Lol

Why did you pick it  up Vicci? – Well it was an Audible Daily Deal so I thought ‘Why not!’ I’d already seen the movie about a hundred times so I was interested in how the book measured against it.

IntGdBN4_400x400

My Thoughts

WOAH this is sooo much better than the movie, and I loved the movie (I must have seen it 20 times)

Lincoln Rhyme is a forensic criminalist who is good as his job, brilliant in fact and was often called to help with crime scenes as he is the best…… was the best.

After a terrible accident Lincoln has ended up lying in a hospital bed and paralysed, now as a quadriplegic Lincoln can only dream of his old job, until he gets a visit from an old friend.

There has been a murder, a gruesome one at that, and the murderer has left clues to another one that is going to happen, the clues were found by Amelia Sachs, a street cop who is then paired with Rhymes to help solves these grizzly crimes.

Lincoln and Sachs are a good pairing, him in his bed talking Amelia through what he wants her to do.
He is also a very angry man who doesn’t want to live any more, and has arranged his own suicide, however the job seems to be getting his creative juices flowing again.

I liked the narration of this book and the gruesome murders were even more graphic when they are being spoken to you.

If you have seen the movie i would take it with a pinch of salt, it is completely different to the book, different murders, people, even the bad guy at the end is different.

So even though it is a brilliant movie, the book always does it better.

IntGdBN4_400x400

About the book

Lincoln Rhyme was once a brilliant criminologist, a genius in the field of forensics — until an accident left him physically and emotionally shattered. But now a diabolical killer is challenging Rhyme to a terrifying and ingenious duel of wits.

With police detective Amelia Sachs by his side, Rhyme must follow a labyrinth of clues that reaches back to a dark chapter in New York City’s past — and reach further into the darkness of the mind of a madman who won’t stop until he has stripped life down to the bone.

Imagine turning up to your own party, and recognising no one. Your best friend has just created your worst nightmare.

Doesn’t that just make you go ohhhh!!!

I really enjoyed this twisty little thriller, it had just enough of “is it him or her?” vibe to it to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Louisa is about to turn 40 and is a brand new mother, her little Noah was an unexpected surprise but she loves him fiercely, even though she is completely exhausted.

Louisa seems to have forgotten what it was like to be a new mother, considering her daughter is now a teenager, and all of the sleep deprivation seems to be taking a toll on her, she is forgetting things and huge parts of her day seem to go by without her even noticing.

It gets to the point where she even starts to forget to feed the baby!

Her best friend Tiff thinks she needs a bit of a pick-me-up, and arranges a surprise 40th birthday party for Louisa, because she doesn’t speak much about her past Tiff is at a bit of a loss on who to invite, so she goes to the place where all your friends are, Facebook, and promptly invites all of Louisa’s old school friends.

And who should turn up out of the woodwork but Oliver, Louisa’s old boyfriend and his new wife! He is super happy to see Louisa…. until he turns up at her house the next day to tell her that his wife is missing!

With twists and turns at every corner, you will be wondering who is telling the truth, and what secrets they are all hiding.

Mama, Mama, Only Mama by Lara Lillibridge @only_mama @suzyapbooktours #bookreview #mamamamaonlymama

Happy Friday all!

Most of you know I don’t read many memoirs, but as a single mother how could I resist a humorous look at single motherhood? Although I have to say this book is for moms at all stages of life, married, single, infants, or grandchildren, we all know what it’s like to be called mama!

Thank you so much Suzy for my invitation to the tour and Lara Lillibridge for making me laugh!👩‍👧‍👦

My Thoughts

About the Book

mother;love;memoir

A Single Mom Shares Her Inspiring and Funny Tales of Parenting, Full of Love, Advice, and Humor
Being a single mother means relaxing your cleanliness standards. A lot. Being a single mother means missing your kids like crazy when your ex has them, only to want to give them back ten minutes after they come home. Being a single mother means accepting sleep deprivation as a natural state. Being a single mother means hauling a toddler, a baby, and a diaper bag while wearing high heels and a cute skirt, because you never know when you’ll meet someone. Being a single mother means finding out you are stronger than you ever knew was possible.
Since birth, Lara Lillibridge’s children wanted, “Mama, Mama, only Mama!” whether they were tired or just woke up from a nap—whether they were starving or had just finished a bowl of goldfish crackers. Over ten years later, not much has changed. Between hilarious episodes and candid stories, Lillibridge offers the bits of advice and enlightenment she’s gained along the way and never fails to commiserate on the many challenges that come with raising children in a non-nuclear family. This creative, touching memoir will resonate with single moms everywhere, whether solo parenting is new territory or well-trodden ground for them.
Written in the style of a diary with blogs, articles and recipes tucked between the pages, Mama, Mama, Only Mama follows Lillibridge and her two children, Big Pants and Tiny Pants, out of divorce, through six years of single parenting, and into the family blender with a quasi-stepfather called SigO. Complete with highly useful recipes such as congealed s’more stew, recycled snack candy bars, instant oatmeal cookies and a fine chicken casserole that didn’t pass Tiny Pants’s “lick test.”
