The Holiday CruiseThe Holiday Cruise

As if it weren’t enough to be cheated on by her husband of ten years, Yorkshire lass Hannah Davis is losing her beauty salon business too. Luckily, her big sister is there to pick up the pieces, but Hannah is desperate to find some independence.

Impulsively, Hannah applies for a spa job…on a cruise ship! Christmas in the Caribbean, springtime in the Mediterranean, what’s not to like? But, despite being in her thirties, Hannah has never done anything on her own before, and she’s terrified.

As the ship sets sail, Hannah has never been further from home…or closer to discovering who she is and who she wants to be.

My Thoughts

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Wow! This book was quite the unexpected gem! This was a book all about discovering who you really are…. A book filled with fabulous characters, strong friendships, and a blooming romance… and the best part it was all set on a cruise ship, that took me on a virtual cruise to places I probably will never go… The entire time I kept thinking about one of my favorite childhood television shows “The Love Boat“ I kept expecting Isaac or Gopher or Doc to pop up any minute…. anybody else watch the show? It was exciting and new! Come on board they’re expecting you??? Ring any bells, anyone… anyone….

Hannah loses her husband, her business, and her home in about a weeks time… fortunately her sister is there to help her pick up the pieces, but Hannah needs to reallydiscover who she is and assert her independence for the very first time in her life… prompted by a chance encounter Hannah decides to apply to work in the spa on a cruise ship… The thought of Christmas in the Caribbean and summer in the Mediterranean sounds simply irresistible…. but after she gets the job reality and fear set in, how will she be able to survive all on her own?

I thoroughly enjoyed the depiction of life working on a cruise ship… i’d venture to guess the close quarters and the amount of time you spend with others leads to fast forming strong friendships… I loved reading about Hannah and her friends and would have loved to spend a day or two with them… also loved all the visits into all the Ports, I felt as though I got to go on a cruise from my couch…. I have been on a couple of cruises and thoroughly enjoyed them but never in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean rather the Atlantic and the Pacific….

The character growth in Hannah was so wonderful to watch and it made the second half of this book so much better…. had this book started off with a romance I think it would have detracted from a lot, especially Hannah’s character… it’s nice to see a woman rediscover herself on her own before a man enters the picture… having said that though, I would really enjoy a sequel to this book!

A wonderful story filled with fun, friendship, love, self discovery, beautiful sights, and did I mention fun? Absolutely recommend if you enjoy books that allow you to escape from reality when you pick them up….

*** many thanks to HQ Digital for my copy of this book ***

The Pretender by Katie Ward @KatieWWriter @rararesources #BookReview #Giveaway

Happy Saturday all!

Welcome to my stop on this enchanting blog tour, I’m thrilled to share my review with you today! Thanks so much to Rachel for my invitation and to Katie Ward for her delightful story!👑

The PretenderThe Pretender

France 2000: Two babies are born on the same day just two hours apart – but to very different lives. Isabella is a Princess and heir to the French throne, while Sophia is born into a life of poverty and abuse at the hands of her father. At the age of 18, Sophia runs away from home. That same night, Isabella is also fleeing from the burden of her royal life when she finds Sophia slumped at the palace gates. Amazed by how alike they look, Isabella proposes a daring plot – to exchange their lives for one week.
‘The Pretender’ is an emotionally intense and compelling story of friendship, love and the strange power of destiny.

My Thoughts

This was a fun fluffy fairytale with a positive message… based on the fairytale “The Prince and The Popper”…. now I am not very familiar with this fairytale other than a vague recollection of there being a Disney movie with Mickey Mouse being the prince and the popper… it is the classic switching of identities, but in this case one of the culprits is a royal…. and as we have all been told before “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.“

Sophia has returned home after attending school, she lives on the wrong side of the tracks… with a shaky family life she is hoping to make amends…. when that does not happen and her father kicks her out she finds herself at the gates to the Royal Palace…. Isabella is a princess but tired of all the restrictions and responsibilities this has put on her life… so when she runs across Sophia and sees how similar they look she hatches a plan… The girls will switch identities for a week…

What I loved about this is how committed both girls were to throwing themselves into the others life… they both definitely had some eye-opening and unexpected experiences…. as they say it is hard to judge another person‘s life until you have walked in their shoes, and Isabella and Sophia got a chance to do this…. I adored the friendship that developed between these girls…. I also appreciated that this was a book filled with lessons especially the fact that your actions have consequences….

This was an enchanting story that leaned a little more towards young adult then new adult… it was a clean red not even sure if it would get a PG rating? Absolutely recommend to readers of all ages who believe in fairytales and happily ever after’s!

Author Bio

Katie Ward always knew she wanted to write for a living. However, she was told by her careers advisor that “it might be more appropriate for you to work in a shop”. When Katie didn’t get the grades she needed to get into college, she negotiated a three month trial. After successfully completing the course she secured a place at her first choice university to study Journalism.

After realising she wanted to be an author, Katie moved to Dublin where she worked her way up from receptionist to Executive Assistant at Merrill Lynch. Katie continued to write in her spare time, submitting her short story into the “Do the Write Thing” competition being run by Irish TV show ‘Seoige and O’Shea’. This story was originally written when Katie was 14 after she was inspired by an article in her favourite teen magazine. Katie was the only non-Irish author selected to have her story published in an anthology of the same name which reached 19 in the Irish Best sellers List. Katie was also shortlisted for a competition judged by MAN Booker Prize winning author Roddy Doyle which was run by Metro Eireann newspaper.

Katie currently lives in Devon with her cat (aka ‘Her Royal Fluffiness’) where she sings in a community choir and has recently taken up Archery. Katie’s favourite author has been Roald Dahl since she was a child as she loves the dark edge he brings to his books. On the flip side though, Katie loves Disney, magic, unicorns and a good rom com film at the cinema with her friends.
